How to use a tower fan

Updated: 21 October 2026

You already own a tower fan, the room still feels hot, and the useful question is where the air should go and when the fan should stop. This page is how to use a tower fan in a UK home: windows, aim, timer, and cleaning. It uses NHS, GOV.UK, Electrical Safety First, and the BBC’s heatwave reporting, plus the timers stored on these amazon.co.uk listings. Model choice stays on the [tower fan comparison](/hub/cooling/tower-fan). Peter F. wrote this on 20 October 2026. This site did not test your unit. Day, night, and the window

The NHS and the GOV.UK beat-the-heat checklist say fans can help below 35°C. Above that, follow their heat advice: shade, fluids, and a cooler place if you need one. By day, close windows and blinds on the sun side. At night, when the air outside is cooler, open the windows. The BBC’s reporting of Arup’s advice puts the fan by an open window, pointing into the room. Pointing the slot at the glass, with nobody in the airflow, leaves the fan working on empty air. A 32.5 cm desk fan by the window still will not replace a floor column across a sofa. If heat in a rented home is more than a fan can touch, the NHS points you to the council’s environmental health team.

Where the air should hit

Stand the column so the breeze crosses your body, across the sofa or along the bed, rather than into your face for hours. GOV.UK says not to aim a fan directly at your body, because that can dry you out. A 90° sweep covers a sector. Switch it off if you only need one seat. Which? says the fan cools you, and an empty room does not get refrigerated. A wet towel over the column blocks the grille and puts water on a live appliance. Night noise is on the quiet tower fan for bedroom page.

How long it should run

Set a timer before you leave the room, and before you sleep. Electrical Safety First says you should not leave a fan on overnight or while you are out, and it wants a smoke alarm on every floor. In this set the Nomad One titles state 8 hours, the 42-inch DREO bullets state 12 hours, the Midea states 7 hours, DR-HTF017 states 1 to 8 hours, the Pelonis states 15 hours, and the desk fan states 2, 4, or 8 hours. Use the shortest setting that covers the time you are in the room. If you smell burning, unplug the fan and leave it unplugged. A hot, buzzing, or tripping socket needs a competent person. Shape does not change this limit: tower fan vs pedestal fan.

Cleaning without soaking the motor

Unplug the fan and let it stop before any cleaning. Vacuum the grille from the outside. Wash only parts the manual allows, then dry them before you plug in again. The 42-inch DREO bullets say the rear grille can be vacuumed or rinsed, and that the interior stays dry and away from humidifiers. That line is not a wash guide for the Levoit, the Midea, or the Pelonis. If the manual is silent, stay with the vacuum. When a DREO base has to be rebuilt, thread the cable before the halves click. If the motor has failed, or the flex is damaged, stop using it.

Common questions

Should the windows be open while the fan runs?
By day, keep sun-facing windows and blinds closed, and use the fan on the people who are in the room. At night, when it is cooler outside, open the windows and put the fan by an open window pointing into the room. The NHS and GOV.UK pages set the 35°C line around that routine. Above 35°C, follow their heat advice.
Where should the fan point?
Point the slot so air crosses the room you are sitting or lying in. The BBC’s sources describe a fan at an open window at night, aimed inward, and air across the body rather than only the face. GOV.UK says you should avoid aiming a fan directly at your body because it can dehydrate you. A 90° oscillation covers a sector. Switch it off if you only need one chair.
Does a tower fan cool an empty room?
It cools you while you are in the breeze. Which? says a fan does not cool an empty room the way air conditioning does. Running it in a shut, empty lounge spends electricity on air nobody is using. Energy Saving Trust’s £0.14 to £0.30 over 24 hours is a band for a fan, not a promise that the thermometer will drop.
How do you clean the grille?
Unplug first. Vacuum the outside of the grille. Rinse a part only when that model’s manual allows it, then dry it before the plug goes back in. On the 42-inch DREO, the bullets say the rear grille can be vacuumed or rinsed and that the interior stays dry. Other models in this set do not carry that sentence, so their manuals decide.
Can you put a wet towel on the fan?
Leave the towel off the column. BBC reporting on heatwave fans says a wet cloth over the fan blocks the airflow and risks water on the electrics. If you want cooler air at night, use the open window and the fan pointing into the room. A damp towel on the intake is not a substitute for that.
What do you do if it smells of burning?
Unplug it and do not switch it back on to see if it stops. Electrical Safety First treats a burning smell as a reason to disconnect. If the socket is hot, buzzing, or tripping with only the fan in it, or the flex needs rewiring, call a competent person. A new model from the comparison is a later decision, after the faulty one is out of use.
