Best ioniser

Updated: 21 October 2026

Best ioniser on amazon.co.uk is not one machine. The seven listings in the [ioniser comparison](/hub/cooling/ionizer) are a filter-free plug, two USB cubes, two Blueair HEPASilent units and two Winix room machines. A hallway smell, a desk and a smoky kitchen are not the same job. The comparison scores the Winix 5500-2 highest for a stated CADR plus review depth, and the MELEDEN GL2103 highest for price against a stated filter. Those labels are conditional. A desk does not need a 6.7 kg tower, and a pollen job does not need an £11 plug. Peter F. used the amazon.co.uk figures in that comparison. There was no lab test. There is no single best ioniser in this set

Roundups often mix a £10 plug with a filter box and a Winix that is not the model in front of you. A filter-free ioniser drops particles onto surfaces. A HEPA-style filter is there to hold them. Blueair’s HEPASilent charges particles so they cling to the media inside the unit. Winix PlasmaWave is a stage you can switch off after the filter, according to the manufacturer and to UK reviews. Calling one of them best without saying for whom repeats the search-page mistake. Ozone wording and asthma claims are refused on ioniser ozone and safety, not settled by stars.

If you want a plug and no filter

The only filter-free listing kept here is the PTYcrazy XY-03 two-pack at about £10.99. It weighs 110 g, with negative ions, no fan, and 8 amazon.co.uk reviews. Buyers call it quiet and mention a hallway that smells less. One buyer still opens a window. Skip it for pollen: there is no CADR. Skip it if you need a stated BS 1363 pin shape or a 12 V car lead, because neither is in the file. Skip it if you share the COPD reviewer’s worry about particle-charging. Eight reviews is too thin to treat 4.8 as a settled score.

If you want a filter on a desk

For about 10 m² under £20, the MELEDEN GL2103 at about £19.99 is the desk pick: HEPA claimed at 0.3 micron, 32 dB, and 4.0 from 2,203 reviews. Some people use the 8-hour shut-off. Others find the night louder than 32 dB, and filters are the complaint that returns. The wall charger is not included. One unit stopped after about six months. The JINPUS at about £25.99 prints the same GL2103 string. Skip it as a higher-stars upgrade: the table says 2.5 micrometres, a bullet says 99.97% of PM2.5, and the review text looks mixed with older purchases. The Blueair Mini Max at about £59 is the mains alternative, at 3.9 from 533 reviews. Use the 8.6 m² in 30 minutes bullet, not the 47.4 m² title.

If you want a room, and the option to leave ions off

For cooking smells, the Blueair 3250i at about £125 states 48 m², HEPASilent and carbon, with 4.4 from 377 reviews. Skip it if you need a printed CADR. The bullet says 18 dB on low and the table says 46 dB. For CADR 390 m³/h, take a Winix. Do not rank the 5300-2 above the 5500-2 because 4.7 is higher than 4.5: the counts are 114 reviews against 27,540. A UK review says you can switch PlasmaWave off on the 5300-2. Turbo on the 5500-2 is very loud. One 5300-2 owner could not disable a light sensor that drops plasma in the dark. Both weigh 6.7 kg, and the room lines disagree. The type, before the name, is the ioniser buying guide.

Common questions

What is the best ioniser if I only have £15?
Inside this set, the PTYcrazy XY-03 two-pack at about £10.99 is the only listing at that cash. It is a fit only for a quiet plug and a mild smell, with a window and a duster. It is a poor buy if you need pollen in a filter. There is no CADR, and the score rests on 8 reviews. The next filtered option, the MELEDEN, is about £19.99 and needs a USB charger you supply.
Is the 5300-2 better than the 5500-2 because 4.7 is higher than 4.5?
Not on that gap alone. The 5300-2’s 4.7 comes from 114 reviews. The 5500-2’s 4.5 comes from 27,540. Both state CADR 390 m³/h. The smaller file has the light sensor and a sleep mode that grew noisy. The larger file has the loud turbo and the awkward timer. Pick on those complaints and on about £149.99 against about £159.
Which one for a desk, and which for cooking smells?
For a desk of about 10 m², the MELEDEN at about £19.99, if you have a USB charger. For a small mains desk, the Blueair Mini at about £59, using the 8.6 m² in 30 minutes bullet. For cooking smells you want carbon, stated on the 3250i and both Winix models, and not on the plug-in, the Mini or either GL2103.
Can I pick a Winix and turn the ion stage off?
A 5300-2 review says plasma mode can be switched off, which matches Winix’s description of PlasmaWave. 5500-2 reviews discuss leaving it on or off. On the 5300-2, a light sensor one owner could not disable also drops PlasmaWave in the dark. The PTYcrazy has no switch stated. The GL2103 ion stage is not described as switchable.
What should I skip if I need a BS 1363 plug in the box?
Skip both USB cubes. They ship a lead, not a wall adaptor, so the UK plug is the charger you already own. The PTYcrazy file does not confirm the pin shape. The Blueair and Winix units are the mains appliances to shortlist when the plug in the box matters. If a Mini arrives with no plug, that is a return.
