E27 ceiling fan with light vs wired

Updated: 21 October 2026

You rent, or you do not want to open the ceiling rose, and a fan that screws in like a bulb looks solved for under £20. An E27 ceiling fan with light versus a wired flush fan is not a feature contest. A lampholder is for a lamp. A motor that spins in that holder is what UK fire and electrical-safety voices tell you not to fit. Both kinds of listing are on the [ceiling fan with lamp comparison](/hub/cooling/ceiling-fan-with-lamp), because that is what amazon.co.uk sells. Room size stays on the [buying guide](/hub/cooling/ceiling-fan-with-lamp/sub/ceiling-fan-with-lamp-buying-guide). Peter F. did not stage a fire test. Updated 21 October 2026. What a screw-in fan actually is

A screw-in fan-light replaces the bulb, not the rose. The MeoYlaery at about £18.99 is a 46 cm unit at 500 g, with 4.0 from 438 reviews. FIBRAVE, also about £18.99, claims E27 and B22, at 710 g, with 4.2 from 101 reviews, and it was rank 1 in this capture. Vecrysit at about £33.99 adds six speeds and an app, at 870 g, in a file of 17 reviews. It is still a fan on a lampholder. The files include a rattle on full speed, units that stopped within weeks, a FIBRAVE left hanging from the cable, and a Vecrysit that shook as it spun up. Vecrysit prints both 120 V and 230 V.

What UK safety bodies say

BBC reporting carries a fire service, an electrician and a council telling people not to fit these fan-lights. The electrician’s point is that the screw works loose, heats, and can shock or fall. Lincolnshire Fire and Rescue still called an unsupported fitting a fire risk. Electrical Safety First says a ceiling fan is not suitable for a light fitting, and tells people who already own one to stop using it. FIBRAVE, MeoYlaery and Vecrysit are that kind of product. A star line does not opt them out. These three weigh 500 g, 710 g and 870 g. A Voltimum note on BS 7671 says a rose fixing for a luminaire should carry not less than 5 kg, so the warning is not the static weight. It is spin, loosening and heat. This page has no fitting steps.

What hardwired changes

A wired flush fan replaces the rose. The canopy fixes into something that can carry vibration, with live, neutral and earth. Sandwich Electrical’s note is the sort UK electricians publish: isolate, prove dead, use a fan-rated fixing, and stop if the ceiling or the cable is not up to it. In this set that shape is the Ensenior at about £56.99, about 14 cm deep, 4.7 from 637 reviews, plus the DWDVBL at about £72.19, the IZOWE 48 cm at about £54.99 and the RLMIEL at about £53.99. They are still small-room fans. Headroom is on the small bedroom page. These receivers want full mains, so a dimmer becomes a plain on/off. In England, Approved Document P makes a new circuit or work around a bath or shower notifiable. A 230 V fitting in zone 1 needs at least IPX4. The price gap is about £35 to £55, and that gap is the fixing.

If you cannot rewire

Renting does not make the lampholder safer. If you cannot change the rose, the screw-in is not the loophole. Use a fan that stands on the floor or a desk, and leave the ceiling fitting as a light. A floor fan plugs into a BS 1363 socket. Running a fan that is already fixed properly is on the how to use page. If you own the flat and you can open the rose, use a wired flush fan. If a screw-in fan is already up, stop using it. The Consumer Rights Act 2015 gives 30 days to reject faulty goods.

Common questions

Can I screw a fan into an E27 or B22 holder?
The listings say yes. MeoYlaery is E27, FIBRAVE claims E27 and B22, and Vecrysit includes a B22 extender. Fire-service comment reported by the BBC, and Electrical Safety First, say a lampholder is not a fan mount. The screw can loosen and heat, and the fan can fall or shock. This page does not give fitting steps, because the advice is not to fit it.
Is a screw-in ceiling fan safe in the UK?
The bodies quoted by the BBC and in the national press say it is not a suitable way to hang a fan. Lincolnshire Fire and Rescue called an unsupported fitting a fire risk even without a recent incident on their log. A 4.2 from 101 reviews is an amazon.co.uk average, not an answer to that warning. A weight of 500–870 g does not remove the spin.
Will it need an electrician?
A screw-in fan is sold as if it will not, which skips the safety warning. A wired flush fan needs live, neutral and earth in a canopy that can carry vibration. A careful person sometimes replaces a like-for-like light outside a bathroom after isolating. Call an electrician for a bathroom zone, a new circuit, no earth, old cable, a weak ceiling, or a tripped breaker. In England the first two are notifiable under Approved Document P.
What if I rent and cannot rewire?
Leave the rose alone. Do not put a fan in the lampholder because a proper fan is out of reach. Use a floor fan or a desk fan on a normal socket. You can take it when you leave. Being careful with the screw does not turn a bulb-fan into a permitted fixture.
What should I buy instead?
A wired flush fan, if you may change the rose and the ceiling can take it. In this set the Ensenior is the small-room pick, with the DWDVBL, the IZOWE 48 cm and the RLMIEL as the other flush options. If you cannot rewire, buy a floor fan. If a screw-in fan is already installed, stop using it.
