Choosing a garage fan in the UK

Updated: October 2026

A search for a garage fan in the UK mixes portable floor fans, fixed wall extractors and fitted roof ventilation, although they solve different problems. For a breeze across a workbench or gym area, a 20-inch floor fan may be enough. For high-volume drying or ventilation, the Trotec TTV 7000 is a separate industrial class, and its airflow has to be tied to a named source. The [Trotec fan comparison](/hub/cooling/trotec-fan) shows the models in this set. Products Compared used amazon.co.uk listings and public UK sources, and did not run a lab test. What a garage fan means in a UK search

A portable floor fan recirculates air inside the space. It can create a strong breeze for someone training, help move odours towards an open door or support surface drying while you are present. It does not remove air through the building fabric, so it is not a wall extractor. A wall or roof fan is a ventilation installation. It needs an opening, weather protection, ducting or shutters, and often electrical work. That purchase fits when the aim is planned air exchange. Damp, combustion fumes and hazardous substances may need a designed system. The household TVE models and the 44 W TVM 13 have no published industrial airflow in the display data. The TTV 7000 is an axial industrial fan, so choose the class before you compare prices.

When a 20-inch floor fan is enough

A 20-inch metal floor fan suits a garage, home gym or workshop when you want a direct breeze rather than ducted extraction. The PureMate example in the wider material is 120 W and about £84.15, presented for garage, gym and office use. It is not a Trotec. SIP and Sealey workshop fans in the same class are around 20 inches, about 105–120 W and 230 V. Those are class references, not extra recommendations. Use this class for supervised circulation, exercise while you are present, or ordinary drying with no hazardous fumes. It does not make mould, solvent vapour or combustion products safe. Electrical Safety First advises against leaving a fan running overnight or while you are out.

When the Trotec TTV 7000 fits

The TTV 7000 belongs where airflow is measured in thousands of cubic metres per hour. Amazon claims 7,000 m³/h, 80 Pa and 460 W, at about £769.06. The current manual gives about 7,400 m³/h on stage 3, 95 Pa and 0.32 kW. The UK shop and Dantherm publish up to 8,500 m³/h and 100 Pa, and Dantherm gives 0.41 kW. Do not blend a flow from one source with power from another. Quote one source at a time, and confirm the article before you use a figure for ducting. The 5.0 average is two ratings and no captured review text. Choose it only when an assessed job needs industrial airflow. The household pick stays on the best Trotec fan page.

Plug, outdoor use and listing conflicts

UK mains are about 230 V, and the TTV 7000 listing states no mains-plug type. In England, Wales and Scotland, regulation 35 of the Electrical Equipment (Safety) Regulations 2016 requires a BS 1363 plug, or a conversion plug with a BS 1362 fuse, when the equipment has a non-UK plug. A travel adaptor is not that arrangement. The manual describes indoor and outdoor use and gives IP55. The Amazon field says indoor. Ask which unit and which document apply. IP55 does not transfer to the household TVE or TVM fans. Amazon also pairs metre-scale dimensions with a 39 cm line, and calls a corded 230 V fan rechargeable with Micro USB. Withhold those fields. Stop for heat, arcing, smoke, a burning smell or repeated trips. A new circuit or wet-site ducting needs a competent person. Everyday steps are in the Trotec fan how-to guide.

Keep household and bedroom decisions separate

The TVE 8, TVE 17, TVE 16 and TVE 23 S can move air in a household room. None publishes a TTV-class airflow figure. The TVM 13 is a low three-speed floor fan, and its listing and manual disagree on wattage and noise. A manual figure of 58 dB(A) at 3 m on the TTV 7000 cannot be lined up with household figures at 1 m. Take a portable 20-inch floor fan for a supervised breeze. Consider the TTV 7000 only when a defined job needs sourced industrial airflow. Choose a fixed extractor when air must leave the building.

Common questions

Is a garage fan the same as a wall extractor?
No. A portable floor fan recirculates air and creates a local breeze. A wall extractor moves air through the building fabric and needs a suitable installation. If the purpose is to remove damp, fumes or combustion products, obtain appropriate ventilation advice rather than assuming a portable fan provides extraction.
When is a 20-inch floor fan enough?
It suits supervised circulation around a workbench, home gym or ordinary drying area where a direct breeze is the goal. UK examples in this class are roughly 105–120 W on 230 V. It is not a substitute for hazardous-fume extraction, and Electrical Safety First advises against leaving it running overnight or unattended.
Which TTV 7000 airflow figure should I quote?
Name the source with the number. Amazon claims 7,000 m³/h and 80 Pa. The current manual gives about 7,400 m³/h and 95 Pa. The UK shop and Dantherm give up to 8,500 m³/h and 100 Pa. Do not combine a flow from one source with power from another.
Can the TTV 7000 be used outdoors?
The current manual states indoor and outdoor use and gives IP55, while the Amazon field says indoor. Verify the exact supplied model and the current documentation with the seller. IP55 applies only to this industrial model, not to household Trotec table, pedestal or floor fans.
What plug does the TTV 7000 use?
The listing does not provide a mains-plug type. Confirm the supplied connection before purchase. For England, Wales and Scotland, the 2016 safety regulations expect a BS 1363 plug, or a non-UK plug with a conversion plug and a BS 1362 fuse. A loose travel adaptor is not that arrangement.
