How to use a fan in hot weather in the UK

Updated: October 2026

On a hot afternoon, a Trotec fan can make you feel more comfortable by moving air across your skin, but it does not refrigerate the room. Knowing how to use a fan in hot weather in the UK means checking the temperature, placing the fan securely and switching it off when continued use is unsafe. The [Trotec fan comparison](/hub/cooling/trotec-fan) covers the models. This page is about safe use, clearance, oscillation and cleaning. Products Compared used amazon.co.uk listings, the manuals cited here and public UK sources, and did not run a lab test. A qualifying purchase can earn us a commission at no extra cost to you.

When a fan helps in hot weather

The NHS says electric fans can help when the temperature is below 35°C. It also advises closing windows, curtains and blinds during the day, then opening them at night when the air outside is cooler. A fan can circulate that cooler air. It cannot lower the room temperature the way a refrigerant air conditioner can. GOV.UK likewise says to use a fan below 35°C and not to aim it directly at the body, because that can contribute to dehydration. Separate professional guidance warns that above 35°C a fan can raise body temperature. These limits matter particularly for older people, babies and anyone affected by illness or medication. If someone shows signs of heat exhaustion or heatstroke, follow NHS advice rather than relying on a stronger setting.

Where to put a Trotec fan

Place a household fan on a stable, level surface. Keep curtains, loose clothing and fingers away from the grille. Clearance depends on the model. The TVE 8 manual specifies 20 cm above, behind, in front and at both sides. Lock the oscillation pin down for up to 90°, and pull it up to stop. The head can tilt by up to 30°. The TVE 17 manual specifies 30 cm around the unit and 80° oscillation. Do not assume the TVE 8 pin on the TVE 17, TVE 16, TVE 23 S or TVM 13. About 20–30 cm is the range on those two manuals, not a rule for every Trotec. Route the cable clear of feet. Plug differences are in the Trotec fan buying guide.

Overnight use and electrical stop signs

Electrical Safety First advises not leaving an electric fan running overnight or while you are out. Turn it off before you go to sleep, unplug it when it is not in use and keep working smoke alarms. A timer does not remove that advice, and none of these household Trotec listings provides a dependable documented sleep mode. Stop if you smell burning, hear buzzing or crackling, see scorching or smoke, or find the plug, socket or fuse unusually hot. Repeated tripping is another stop sign. Do not balance a fan on a chair, a windowsill or the edge of a table to bring it closer to the bed. Noise claims that name a speed and a distance are separated in the Trotec bedroom fan guide.

How to clean the fan

Switch off and unplug the fan before cleaning. Let it stop, use dry hands and hold the plug rather than the cable. For the TVE 8 and the TVE 17, the manuals specify a soft, damp, lint-free cloth on the housing and warn against moisture inside. Do not spray cleaner into the grille or the motor. Avoid solvents, alcohol-based products and abrasives. The cloth should not drip, and the fan must be dry before you plug it in. The TVE 17 manual allows blade cleaning only after the grille is removed as its own instructions describe. If your model does not open that way, clean the exterior only.

When to stop and get help

Stop if the plug, socket or cable is damaged, or if the unit smokes, smells of burning, arcs or keeps tripping. Contact the retailer if the product does not match its description, such as a missing remote or an unexpected non-UK plug. Use a competent repairer or replace a damaged appliance. A new circuit, hard wiring or a fixed extractor is not a portable-fan task. Ducting an industrial axial fan, or using it on a wet site, needs a professional assessment. IP55 on the TTV 7000 applies to that model only. The class difference is in the garage and workshop fan guide. Below 35°C, keep the breeze indirect, stay present and switch the fan off before sleep.

Common questions

Can I use a Trotec fan above 35°C?
NHS guidance says fans can help below 35°C, while GOV.UK professional guidance warns that above 35°C they can raise body temperature. Do not treat faster airflow as a substitute for cooling, hydration or medical help. Move to a cooler place and follow current NHS hot-weather advice.
Should I point the fan at my face or bed?
GOV.UK advises not aiming an electric fan directly at the body, because that can contribute to dehydration. Position it to circulate air across the occupied area rather than blasting one person continuously. Keep the grille clear, drink regularly and remember that the fan does not refrigerate the room.
How far should a Trotec fan stand from the wall?
Use the manual for the exact model. The TVE 8 requires 20 cm clearance above, behind, in front and at both sides. The TVE 17 requires 30 cm. Do not apply one figure to every Trotec fan, and keep curtains and other loose materials farther from the grille.
How do I start oscillation on the TVE 8?
Press the oscillation pin down until it locks. The head then moves through up to 90°. Pull the pin up to cancel oscillation. That control belongs to the TVE 8 manual and should not be assumed for the TVE 17, TVE 16, TVE 23 S or TVM 13.
Is it safe to leave a fan on overnight?
Electrical Safety First advises turning an electric fan off before sleep and not leaving it running while you are out. Keep working smoke alarms, unplug the fan when it is not in use and stop if the plug becomes hot or you notice buzzing, arcing, smoke or a burning smell.
