Air cooler for a bedroom

Updated: 21 October 2026

You want something quiet beside the bed on a hot night, and the obvious move is to shut the door, shut the window, and leave a water cooler running until morning. An air cooler for a bedroom can help only if that room can still lose moisture and you are judging the stream, not a silent air conditioner. Sleep mode slows the fan. It does not dry the air. The spec table is the [air cooler comparison](/hub/cooling/air-cooler). Prices and stars are from amazon.co.uk on 19 October 2026. Peter F. did not measure these in a bedroom. A shut bedroom is the weak case

An evaporative cooler adds water to the air and cools the air near the machine. Energy Saving Trust says so, and it says to keep the room ventilated. Keeping internal doors closed, so warm air from the rest of the home does not pour in, is not an instruction to seal the bedroom. Leave a route for humid air to leave, such as a window on the security stay when the air outside is cooler and it is safe to do so. A dry, ventilated bedroom is the case where a pad can take the edge off if you lie in the stream. If the windows already stream, or you can smell damp before you fill the tank, a wet pad adds moisture. What the closed door holds in is the moisture. A lighter unit in a sealed room is still a sealed room.

Sleep mode and the timer

Every listing kept here has a sleep mode and a timer. None of those names is a dehumidifier. Sleep mode slows or cycles the fan. On the BLACK+DECKER, reviews say sleep mode turns itself on and off. On the Air Pro AP-H3, the display stays bright in sleep mode, and covering it blocks the remote. The LEENON bullet says the display turns off after 10 minutes. Baby mode on the Midea is the one UK reviews often call quiet. A timer stops the unit so the tank is not still wet at dawn. It does not wring water out of the air. The LEENON’s 3 litre tank is the short one. The others hold 6, 7, or 8 litres. How you empty and dry it is on how to use an air cooler. If you set a long timer and shut the door, you have chosen the weak case on purpose.

Noise you can check

Only the LEENON (35 dB) and the Midea (28 dB) print a decibel figure. The other four do not. A blank is not a quiet machine, and a printed number is still a claim. This page does not treat under 40 dB as a sleep rule for these six. Oscillation noise shows up after use, on the Midea and on the AP-H3. If you are a light sleeper, try a slower mode with the door not sealed.

Stay with the stream, or change category

Stay with an evaporative cooler when the night is dry, you can ventilate, and you will lie in the stream. Neither a decibel claim nor baby mode is a reason to shut the room. Change category when the bedroom is already humid, you need the door and window shut, or you need the air in the room cooler. A refrigerant portable wants the room closed and the hose sealed, which is why the cost bands are on air cooler vs air conditioner. A window you cannot leave open does not make a wet pad safe in a sealed room. If damp is already there, and cleaning a tank would not explain it, stop.

Common questions

Can you run an evaporative cooler with the bedroom door and window shut?
That is the weak case. The unit adds moisture and cools air near the grille, which Energy Saving Trust states, and a shut room gives that moisture nowhere to go. Keeping internal doors closed, so the rest of the home’s heat stays out, is not the same as sealing the bedroom. A dry night with a window able to vent is the setup that matches the machine. A clammy sealed room does not.
Does sleep mode dry the air or only slow the fan?
It slows or cycles the fan. It does not dry the air, and it is not an air conditioner. All six listings here include a sleep mode and a timer. BLACK+DECKER reviews say that mode cycles rather than staying quiet. The Air Pro AP-H3 display can stay bright. A timer stops the run. It does not remove the water you put in the tank.
Which listings print decibels, and what do LEENON reviews say?
The LEENON prints 35 dB and the Midea prints 28 dB. The other four do not print a decibel figure. LEENON reviews split between people who sleep with the tower on a high speed and people who hear an ordinary fan. Those are UK review comments, not a lab result, and they do not create a rule that anything under 40 dB is fine for sleep.
Where should a 10 kg tower without wheels sit?
Put the Midea where it can stay for the night. A review says this model has no wheels, and the listing weight is 10 kg before water. You will not want to carry it once the tank is full. Place it so the stream reaches the bed and any oscillation noise is acceptable. Lighter towers in this set are about 5.9 kg and 6 kg on their listings.
What are the signs the bedroom is already too damp?
Streaming windows, a clammy duvet, a musty smell, or visible damp before you add water. A wet pad adds moisture. It will not dry that room out. If the smell or the mould continues after the tank has been emptied and dried, that is a stop, not another sleep mode. Stop using the unit rather than looking for a quieter setting.
