How to use a pedestal fan

Updated: 21 October 2026

The box is open on the living-room floor, or last summer’s fan has a grey coat of dust on the grille, and you want air on you without a wet motor or a blade that is still spinning. This is how to use a pedestal fan: seat the pole, aim the head, then learn what the buttons really do, and only then clean it. It assumes you already own one. Ranking lives on the [pedestal fan comparison](/hub/cooling/pedestal-fan). Peter F. used these amazon.co.uk listings and public UK cleaning and heat advice, captured on 20 October 2026. There was no lab test. A qualifying purchase can earn a commission at no extra cost to you.

Build it so it stands

Lay the parts out and match them to the diagram before you tighten anything. On the Schallen fans, reviewers describe a wobble that is really a pole that has not passed through the centre of the foot. Push the pole home, then try a gentle rock on a hard floor. Do not decide the motor is faulty while the stand is still loose. The cage uses a small screw and nut, and a screwdriver is not in the box. Belaco reviews say you need a PH1 and a PH2, neither supplied. Support the ROVSUN head while you seat it. If the grille is cracked or the pole is bent, return it. Fit the guard before the plug goes near the wall, then start on the lowest speed. If the lead is a 2-pin, do not force it into a UK socket with a loose adaptor. That supply problem is in the pedestal fan buying guide.

Aim, oscillation, and height

Point the head at the person, not at a thermometer. A pedestal fan cools you by moving air across skin. It does not drop the room temperature, and the NHS heat advice is that electric fans can help below 35°C. Above that, the same breeze can make things worse. For a chair, tilt the stream across your chest. For a bed, aim across the mattress at about shoulder height when you are lying down. Belaco claims up to 125 cm. An AirCraft is 90 cm, and taking the lower stem off can sit too low for a high bed. If the breeze disappears for most of the sweep, turn oscillation off and fix the tilt. Do not oil the motor. None of these listings says to. Night speed, lights, and beeps belong on the quiet pedestal fan for the bedroom page.

Timer, remote, and the first evening

Many of the about £30 16 inch fans in this set have no timer in the spec. A customer question on the Schallen pages asks about one, and the table does not list it. Leaving that fan on all night is not the same as a timer. Electrical Safety First has warned that a motor left running can overheat. A timer is a convenience, not a certificate that overnight use is safe. Check the batteries before you blame a handset. One ROVSUN review found none fitted. The AirCraft remote has no dock, so pick a spot for it before 1am. The Air Pro spec is button control. If no handset is in the box, that matches the reviews. Set the lowest speed and decide whether it is usable from the chair or the bed.

Clean it and when to stop

Unplug the fan and wait until the blades have stopped before a clip or a screw comes off the grille. Green Fox and TechRadar both start a standing-fan clean the same way: power off at the plug, then open the guard. Wipe the blades with a damp cloth and dry them fully before they go back. Do not run water into the motor, the switch box, or the lead. Let every part dry before you reassemble. The AirCraft’s lower stem comes off to shorten the fan. That is a setup change, not a wash. If the plug or the lead is hot, a breaker trips, or anyone has had a shock, stop and get a competent person. Do not open the motor. If it still wobbles after the pole is seated, or the guard will not close, return it.

Common questions

Do you unplug before the grille comes off?
Yes. Switch off, pull the BS 1363 plug, and wait until the blades have stopped. Then undo the clips or the small cage screw. Green Fox and TechRadar start with that order. Put the plug back only when the guard is closed and the parts are dry.
Why does a new fan wobble?
On the Schallen reviews, the usual cause is a pole that has not gone through the centre of the foot, so the stand feels loose on a flat floor. Reseat it before you call the motor poor. Test on a hard floor. Carpet hides a lean that the kitchen will show.
Where do you aim the head for a bed or a chair?
For a chair, tilt the stream across your chest. For a bed, send it across the mattress at about shoulder height when you are lying down, not straight into your eyes. The fan is moving air over you. It is not a target for the room thermometer.
Can you wash the blades?
You can wipe them with a damp cloth once the fan is unplugged and the grille is off, then dry them before they go back. Keep water away from the motor, the switches, and the cable. Do not oil the bearings. These listings do not tell you to.
What if the remote does nothing?
If the model is a ROVSUN, check the batteries. One review found the handset empty until cells were fitted. If the model is an Air Pro, the spec is button control, and reviews say no remote arrived. Look at the fan’s own buttons. If a listed remote still does nothing with fresh batteries, use the return window.
When do you stop and return it?
Stop if the guard is cracked, the pole is bent, or the unit arrived smashed, as one Air Pro buyer reported. Stop if it still wobbles after the pole is seated on a hard floor, or if the cage will not close. Stop if the plug is 2-pin and you would need a loose adaptor. A hot plug, a tripping breaker, or a shock means unplug and call a competent person. Do not open the housing.
Is overnight running the same as a timer?
No. A timer, such as the ROVSUN’s 7.5 hours or the AirCraft’s 12 hours, switches the fan off after a set period. Many of the about £30 pedestals in this set do not list a timer at all. Leaving those running until morning is your decision, and a motor can overheat.
