How to fit a ceiling fan UK

Updated: 21 October 2026

You are about to take down a ceiling rose and hang a fan that weighs more than the pendant and vibrates every time it runs. How to fit a ceiling fan UK, in a dry room, means support first, then isolation, then the conductors you find, then spin direction once the blades are still. It is not a terminal diagram that replaces the manual. Weights and listing conflicts are on the [ceiling fan wood comparison](/hub/cooling/ceiling-fan-wood). Peter F. wrote this from UK fitting guides and the review notes on 20 October 2026. We did not fit these fans in a test house. Check the ceiling before you buy

Sandwich Electrical’s fitting guide says a light rose is not a fan support. In this set the weights run from the SANYCASA at 2.3 kg to the reiga at 8 kg. The Pilanp page does not print a weight. If the rose is loose, do not hang a fan until you know what is above the hole. The fixing should land on a joist or a fan-rated brace. EGLO’s manual asks for blades at least 2.1 m above the floor and about 300 mm from the walls. Heathfield treats a flush mount, or the shortest rod, as the usual choice on a 2.4 m ceiling. On a 2.3–2.4 m ceiling, read the ceiling fan for a low ceiling page before a long rod.

Isolate and match the wires

Turn the circuit off at the consumer unit, not only at the wall switch. A switch can leave a permanent live in the rose. Prove the cables dead and photograph which core went where. A typical UK lighting cable is brown, blue and earth. Older colours, or a borrowed neutral, are a reason to stop. The Ceiling Fan Company explains that separate wall control of fan and lamp usually needs an extra core, such as three-core-and-earth. One cable means the remote is the control you have. A Pilanp review that mentions a live labelled “FIRE” is a stop. Do not guess that it means brown. Span and material sit on the wooden ceiling fan buying guide.

After it is up

Tighten the blade screws in the order the manual gives, then run the fan and watch the drop. Ovlaim notes include a cover that rattles or arrived cracked. Pilanp notes include clicking that cable ties did not cure. If the noise stays after the fixings are tight, that is a goods question. Set direction only when the blades have stopped. UK notes and the EGLO manual describe summer as anticlockwise when you look up, and winter as clockwise on a low speed. The Consumer Rights Act 2015 gives a 30-day short-term right to reject if the fan is not as described.

When a professional should take over

Stop and call a competent electrician if the cables are old rubber or fabric, if you cannot find a joist, if the room is a bathroom, or if the job means a new circuit. In England, Approved Document P is about whether the work is notifiable. Scotland and Northern Ireland run their own rules, and BS 7671 is what a competent person works to. Also stop if you cannot isolate the consumer unit. The Ovlaim specification says Type L, which is not a BS 1363 plug, and this ASIN gives no outdoor rating. A bathroom fan with no IP code is a professional job before the blades go up. If the problem is the wiring or the structure, leave the rose off and make the circuit safe.

Common questions

Do you turn the power off at the wall or at the consumer unit?
Turn it off at the consumer unit, and prove the cable dead. A wall switch often switches only one live and can leave another live in the rose, which remote receivers sometimes need and which will still be energised. Label the breaker so nobody switches it back while the canopy is open. If you cannot identify the breaker, stop.
Can the old ceiling rose hold a fan of 7–8 kg?
Do not assume it can. The Ovlaim is 7.45 kg and the reiga is 8 kg. A rose that held a glass shade is not designed for that mass plus vibration. The fixing needs a joist or a fan-rated brace. The lighter fans in this set, at 2.3 kg and 2.8 kg, still vibrate, so the same support rule applies, even though the screws feel less dramatic.
What if there is no joist in the centre of the room?
You need a fan-rated brace or a different position that does hit solid timber, not a larger plastic plug. If the only way to reach a joist is to open the ceiling and you are not set up to make that good, that is a job for a carpenter and an electrician together. Do not hang the fan from plasterboard because the hole is already where the rose was.
When do you stop and call an electrician?
Stop if the colours are not the ones you expected, if the cable is old, if there is no earth where the fan needs one, if the room is a bathroom, or if you would be adding a circuit. Also stop if a live is labelled in a way you do not understand, such as the “FIRE” wording reported on a Pilanp install. Part P in England means some jobs must be notified, and all of them must be safe.
What should you do if the instructions call live FIRE?
Stop and compare that word with the diagram in the manual and with the photograph of your rose. Do not assume it means the UK brown live. One Pilanp review records an electrician telling the buyer the instructions needed rewriting. If you cannot match the label to a conductor you understand, leave the cable safe and get a competent person to finish the connection.
