How to use a desk fan

Updated: 21 October 2026

You already own the fan. The remaining mistakes are where it stands, what you do when the room reaches 35°C, and how you clean it without soaking the motor. A desk fan moves air. It does not lower the air temperature. This is placement, the heat limit, an overnight rule stricter than many bedside habits, and a clean that depends on a clip-off cover or a screw-on grille. It is not a ranking. The listings are in the [desk fan comparison](/hub/cooling/desk-fan). Peter F. used GOV.UK, NHS, and Electrical Safety First guidance, plus these amazon.co.uk listings, on 20 October 2026. There was no lab test. Where it should stand

Put it on a flat surface, in from the edge. Electrical Safety First says not to leave a fan where it can be knocked off. The gaiatop is about 113 g, and reviewers already call the stand a little flimsy. Keep the lead out of the blades. If the head oscillates, leave an empty arc. The Honeywell’s oscillation bullet is disputed by its own reviews, which describe tilt, so aim that one and leave it. Point the breeze past you, not into your eyes for hours. Choosing the lead in the first place is the desk fan buying guide.

Heat, aim, and overnight use

GOV.UK’s Beat the heat guidance says fans can help when the room is below 35°C. At 35°C and above, a fan can make things worse because it pushes hot air over you and can speed dehydration. The NHS advice is to drink fluids, shade the room, and not rely on a fan once the air is that hot. Do not aim the fan straight at your body for long periods. Overnight, Electrical Safety First says not to leave an electric fan running while you sleep or while you are out, and to unplug it if it smells of burning. That is stricter than reviews that leave a low speed on beside a bed. Only the Dr. Prepare listing prints timers, of 2, 4, and 8 hours.

How to clean it

Unplug first, every time, and wait until the blades have stopped. Morphy Richards’ UK note for a different USB fan is the useful pattern: disconnect, wipe with a damp cloth, and do not immerse the fan. Water in the port or the motor is a shock risk. The listings note removable covers on the SWEETFULL models, the TriPole, and the Joneytech, and gaiatop reviewers say the guard comes off. Lift it, wipe the blades with a barely damp cloth, and let every part dry before the lead goes back. A screw-on grille is slower. JriA and Abode reviews describe guards that are fiddly. If the nut is not obvious, wipe through the grille and stop. Do not run a wet fan to dry itself.

When to stop

Stop and unplug if you smell burning, see melted plastic, or feel a plug or adaptor that is hot. Electrical Safety First treats a burning smell as a stop. Smoke, or a smell that returns after the fan has been in use, is not a new-plastic smell on first run. Stop if the lead is damaged or a mains plug is cracked. Stop if the fan has been wet, if a finger can reach the blades, or if a sweep now grinds. Noise on a call is the quiet desk fan for office page.

Common questions

Where should you put a desk fan?
On a flat surface, in from the edge, with the lead out of the walkway and out of the blades. Leave space if the head sweeps, especially with a 12-inch fan about 48 cm tall. Aim the breeze across the desk or past you, not into your face for hours. A light USB fan such as the 113 g gaiatop is easy to knock off a stack of books.
Can you leave a desk fan on overnight?
Electrical Safety First advises you not to leave an electric fan on overnight or while you are out, and to unplug it if it smells of burning. That is stricter than the bedside habit in many amazon.co.uk reviews, where people leave a low speed running. If you follow the charity, switch it off when you sleep. Only the Dr. Prepare listing in this set prints a timer.
When should you stop using a fan in a heatwave?
Stop relying on it for comfort when the room is 35°C or above. GOV.UK says fans help below that and can make heat stress worse above it, because they blow hot air over you. The NHS advice is to keep fluids up, shade the room, and seek help if you feel unwell. A higher speed does not fix air that is already that hot.
How do you clean a USB desk fan?
Disconnect it, wait until the blades stop, and keep water out of the port and the motor. If the cover clips off, as on the TriPole, the SWEETFULL models, the Joneytech, and the gaiatop in reviews, lift it and wipe the blades with a barely damp cloth. Let it dry before you reconnect. Do not rinse the housing in the sink.
How do you clean a mains desk fan with a screw-on grille?
Unplug it, keep water off the motor, and follow that model’s grille rather than forcing clips. JriA and Abode owners describe screw-on guards that are fiddly. Wipe what you can reach, dry the grille fully, and only remove a blade nut if you can see how it is fitted. If the guard will not move without bending, clean through it and stop.
What do you do if it smells of burning?
Unplug it and do not turn it back on to see if the smell goes. Electrical Safety First treats a burning smell as a stop signal. A slight new-plastic smell the first time you run a new Air Pro is a different review comment. Leave it unplugged and use the seller’s returns route if you have just bought it.
