How to choose the best fan UK homes can plug in

Updated: 20 October 2026

A warm flat in a British heatwave usually leaves you with one reachable socket and a page of fans that all claim to be quiet. The best fan UK shoppers can actually use is the one whose job, plug, and low speed match the room. A fan moves the air that is already there. It does not refrigerate the room. This page is the order of those checks for the twelve listings on the [fan comparison](/hub/cooling/fan). Peter F. compared those amazon.co.uk listings and public UK sources on 20 October 2026. What a fan will and will not do

Energy Saving Trust says a fan cools you by moving air over your skin. It does not lower room temperature the way portable air conditioning does. Their Great Britain sketch is about £0.14 to £0.30 for 24 hours of fan use, against about £4.62 to £5 for a portable unit. GOV.UK says use a fan below 35°C and do not aim it at your body. Night placement is on the quiet fan for bedroom page.

Match the shape to the job

A desk fan is one person: the JriA and Air Pro are 12 inch table fans, and the DR.PREPARE is a 32.5 cm desk tower at 60 dB. A pedestal is height and tilt. The Belaco states up to 125 cm, 85° oscillation, and 45 dB. A tower is the DREO column, 30 × 30 × 92 cm, with a remote and an 8-hour timer. The fork is the pedestal fan vs tower fan page.

Plug, noise, and a base that stays put

A household fan should arrive with a fused BS 1363 plug. Electrical Safety First says that, and regulation 35 of the Electrical Equipment (Safety) Regulations 2016 points the same way. Belaco names BS 1363. Grey Schallen says Type G. JriA says Type G. DR.PREPARE says a standard UK plug. Honeywell says 240 V and does not name the plug shape. The white DREO voltage field says 120.0, the black connector says EEC 7/7, and the DREO pedestal table says 120 V and 2-pin. DREO titles say 20 dB and the tables say 25, 28, or 28.2 dB.

What the pounds buy in this set

About £20 to £30 is the Bearwind handheld, the REQUISITE NEEDS stand at about £27.99 with 3.9 from 298 reviews, or the Belaco, Schallen, and JriA near £30. Around £35, the Honeywell is 4.5 from 28,764 reviews. About £79.99 on the DREO rows buys a remote and a star line, and the table can still say 120 V or EEC 7/7. Schallen reviews are one block of 6,922. The DREO towers are one block of 47,486.

Common questions

Does a fan cool the room?
No. Energy Saving Trust says a fan cools you by moving air over your skin, and it does not lower room temperature the way portable air conditioning does. Their Great Britain sketch puts a fan near £0.14 to £0.30 for 24 hours, against several pounds for a portable unit. A dearer fan in this set is not automatically cheaper to run. Check the wattage on that listing, and do not expect a degree drop by morning.
Desk fan, pedestal, or tower for a bedroom?
A 12 inch desk fan or the Honeywell is for one person close to the machine. A pedestal or a tower is for air that has to clear the bed, if the low speed is the one you will sleep beside. The DR.PREPARE prints 60 dB, which is a desk figure, not a night promise. Timers and the overnight limit are on the bedroom page, not in this sequence.
What plug should you see on a UK listing?
A fused BS 1363 3-pin plug for a mains fan, on 220–240 V. Electrical Safety First states that for electric fans. In this set, look for BS 1363, Type G, or a standard UK plug in the table. A 120 V field, a 2-pin connector, or EEC 7/7 means you open the photos and you do not assume the amazon.co.uk URL has fixed the plug.
Is a £30 pedestal enough?
It can be, for a small room, if you accept a lighter build. The Belaco at about £29.99 names a British plug, a height to 125 cm, and 45 dB. Reviews still call the base flimsy. The Schallen pair is the same money with a shared review file and no decibel cell. Enough means the breeze reaches you. It does not mean a heavy commercial stand.
Why do some titles say 20 dB when the table says 28 dB?
The title is the claim. The table is the other printed figure, and on the DREO rows they disagree: 20 dB in the title, and 25 dB, 28 dB, or 28.2 dB in the table. Speeds disagree too, eight in the title and three or four in the table. Reviews say the low gear is the quiet one. Use the speed you will leave on, not the smaller number.
How many watts does a normal fan use?
In this set the printed figures run from 10 W on the Bearwind handheld and 16 W on the DR.PREPARE, through 30 W on the Honeywell, to about 36 to 45 W on the pedestals and towers that state a wattage. That is why a full day of fan use stays well under a portable air conditioner on the Energy Saving Trust sketch. Watts are not airflow, and the airflow units in this folder do not match each other.
What should you check before you pay?
Confirm the job, then the plug and voltage on that ASIN, then the noise figure for the speed you will use, then whether it oscillates or only tilts, then whether reviews mention a flexing base. Leave watts until last. Do not add shared review counts, and do not import a newspaper winner that is not one of these twelve listings.
