Quiet 12000 BTU air conditioner for a bedroom

Updated: 21 October 2026

The room you want to cool is the room you sleep in, and a 12,000 BTU portable can win the temperature and lose the night. A quiet setup here means putting the compressor outside, or switching a monobloc off before you lie down. Listing decibels are not one scale. Prices sit on the [12000 BTU air conditioner comparison](/hub/cooling/12000-btu-air-conditioner). Peter F. updated this on 20 October 2026 from the amazon.co.uk listings. Why the decibel on the box misleads

Sound pressure is what a meter reads at a stated distance. Sound power is usually the larger number. A 39 dB line with no distance and no mode is not 39 dB(A) at 1 m in silent mode. Aircon Adviser's guide cites World Health Organization bedroom guidance under 30 dB(A), and says 39 dB(A) still sits above that mark. We have not measured your room. Midea's amazon.co.uk field is 39 dB. A bullet says 39 dB(A) in silent mode at 1 m. The UK page also lists higher indoor steps and 59 dB sound power. Full cooling is the higher indoor figure, and outdoor pressure of 56 dB(A) still matters for a neighbour.

What these 12,000 BTU units are like at night

The overnight candidate is the Midea, and only if the outdoor section has a place. Reviewers say the indoor section is quiet once the set temperature is reached. Skip it if 45.5 kg has to move every evening, or if outdoor noise will sit under a neighbour's window. Architecture is on the portable versus split page. Who skips the price is on the best-of page. The Air Pro is not the bedroom pick. The field is 65 dB, at 3.8 from 20 reviews, and several say it is too loud for sleep, including a bang when the compressor stops. At £499.99 it is the reviewed monobloc for a room you can leave. The QINLIGAO prints 52 dB as a night mode with no reviews. The wall split prints 23 dB with no method and a 10 kg weight that is not credible for a complete pair.

If you still want it in the bedroom

Pre-cooling is the tactic when the compressor has to stay in the room. The Independent's heatwave test suggested cooling the room, then switching off. The room will warm up again. On a short hot night that can be enough. Across a sticky week it is not a substitute for plant that sits outside. Sleep mode can drop the fan. It does not move a monobloc compressor out of the bedroom. Keep the hose short, which the venting guide covers.

A bang when the compressor stops

That bang is in the Air Pro reviews, at the moment the compressor stops. It is a separate problem from a steady fan, and it wakes people who might have tolerated a hum. Try a setpoint that stops the unit short-cycling, once. If the thump remains, switch the machine off at bedtime or move the cooling to a unit whose compressor is outside the room. Do not open the case, and unplug the unit if you see water at the same time. A 52 dB night-mode bullet with no reviews is not evidence you will sleep.

Common questions

Can you sleep with a 12,000 BTU portable on?
Sometimes, and often not. A monobloc keeps the compressor in the room. Air Pro reviews at 65 dB repeatedly say the unit is too loud for sleep. The Midea is the unit people describe as quiet once it is at temperature, because the outdoor section holds the compressor. Even 39 dB(A) silent mode sits above the under-30 dB(A) bedroom mark Aircon Adviser attributes to WHO guidance. We did not measure your bedroom.
Is 39 dB the number you will hear?
It is the Midea's silent-mode sound pressure, printed as 39 dB(A) at 1 m under JIS C9612. The same UK page lists higher indoor steps, 44, 47 and 49 dB(A), sound power of 59 dB and outdoor pressure of 56 dB(A). On a hot evening, expect the higher indoor step. The amazon.co.uk field that simply says 39 dB does not replace those steps.
Is 65 dB a bedroom figure?
It is the Air Pro's listed noise field, and the reviews treat it as too loud for sleep and for television. It is not a night mode. Which?'s portable measurements, on a different set of machines, span about 54.6 to 67.4 dBA. That shows how loud one-piece units can be, and it is not a score for this ASIN. Use 65 dB as a warning beside the bed.
Will a wall split be quieter indoors?
A fixed split can be quieter in the bedroom because the compressor is outdoors. Aircon Adviser describes indoor quiet-mode figures around 18–21 dB(A) for that type. The generic unit prints 23 dB with no test method and only three reviews, so do not buy it for that number. You still need an F-gas qualified installer, and in England a cooling-only outdoor unit is outside Class G. The £659.99 is the hardware.
Should you pre-cool and switch off?
Yes, as a tactic for a loud monobloc. Independent testers suggested cooling the room, then switching off, when a portable was too noisy overnight. The temperature will climb. It is a reasonable compromise for one hot night and a weak plan for a long heatwave if you need the machine running until morning.
