How to use a Dyson fan

Updated: 21 October 2026

You have the machine out of the box and the remote, the app, or a charging cable is not doing what the title implied. This is how to use a Dyson fan for the models in our [Dyson fan comparison](/hub/cooling/dyson-fan): fan mode, heat mode, the filter on the machines that have one, and the point where you switch it off. The notes are from Dyson’s UK AM09 guide, Electrical Safety First and the GOV.UK heat checklist. Peter F. did not test these units in a lab. Fan mode and heat mode

On the AM09, Dyson’s UK guide puts the remote on the loop. Blue is the fan blowing room air. Red is heating. Set a target in 1°C steps and point the remote at the base. The heater stays off when the target is below the temperature the machine is already reading. That is the thermostat, not a dead element. Fan mode still only moves air. The PC1 has no heater, so there is no red heat mode. The HP1 claims heat and MyDyson, and one buyer said the unit that arrived had no Wi-Fi. The HP00 listing never claims the app. The HushJet is a 210 g cordless fan. Charge it from the cable in the box. The 240 V cell is not proof of a mains appliance.

The filter, on the machines that have one

The HP1 and the PC1 are named on Dyson’s page for filter 965432-01. Unplug before you open the tower. The interval is 12 months, or sooner if the machine alerts you, and the cartridge is £75. The PC1 cell says HEPA while the bullets say HEPA H13, so fit the cartridge that page names. The AM09 is not on that list. Its included-components line is a cord, so there is nothing to rinse. The HP00 is not named either. Use the model number on the rating plate before you order a cartridge meant for the HP1. If the alert stays on after a correct cartridge, contact Dyson rather than buying a second one the same afternoon.

Timer, overnight, and the 35°C line

The AM09 sleep timer is on the remote. Set it while you are still awake enough to see that it has stopped. Electrical Safety First says use a fused UK 3-pin plug, do not leave a fan on overnight or while you are out, and unplug it if you smell burning. A 2,000 W heater is a stronger reason to leave the room only when the machine is off. Well insulated spaces or occasional use is the ecodesign line for this heater class. It is not permission to run the AM09 all night. GOV.UK’s beat-the-heat checklist says use a fan below 35°C and do not aim it at your body. Above that, moving air can add heat to your skin.

When you stop

Stop and unplug if you smell burning, if the cord is damaged, if water has gone inside, or if the unit will not stay on. Dyson’s AM09 guide says a damaged supply cord is replaced by Dyson or a similarly qualified person. Do not tape it or fit a two-pin lead. UK mains are 230 V, and a corded machine should have a fused BS 1363 plug. If the HP1 or PC1 listing has no voltage, read the rating plate. A howl, or a tower that dies in the first weeks, is a return under the Consumer Rights Act 2015, not a remote reset. The HushJet has no tank, so do not pour water in. If you are still choosing the model, use the Dyson fan buying guide.

Common questions

How do I turn the AM09 from fan to heat?
Point the remote at the base. Blue is the fan, which Dyson calls cooling mode, and red is heating. Set the target in 1°C steps above the room if you want the element to run. The remote docks on the loop. This amazon ASIN’s box line lists a cord, so if no remote is in the carton, do not assume the dyson.co.uk page and the amazon box are the same shipment.
Why will the heater not start?
On the AM09 the heater stays off when the target is below the room temperature the machine is reading. Raise the target, then try again. If the machine is a PC1, the listing has no heater to start. If the cord is damaged or you smell burning, stop using it. A thermostat that refuses a low target is not the same fault as a dead unit.
How often do I change the HP1 or PC1 filter, and what does it cost?
Dyson’s page for 965432-01 says every 12 months or when the machine alerts you, at £75, and it names the HP1 and the PC1. Unplug first. That price is the parts-page figure, not a quote from amazon.co.uk on the day you reorder. If the alert stays on after a correct cartridge, contact Dyson rather than buying a second one immediately.
Can I leave it on overnight?
Electrical Safety First says not to leave a fan on overnight or while you are out. The AM09 has a sleep timer on the remote so it can switch itself off. Use that while you are still awake to see that it has stopped. Do not treat well insulated spaces or occasional use as permission to run a 2,000 W heater through the night.
What do I do if the cable is damaged or I smell burning?
Unplug it. Do not tape the cord or keep using it until the morning. Dyson’s AM09 guide says a damaged supply cord is replaced by Dyson or a similarly qualified person. A burning smell is the same stop. If the machine is new and failed, use the retailer’s returns route. A qualified repair is the next step, not a homemade plug.
