How to use a pedestal fan

Updated: 21 October 2026

The pole is in pieces and the remote does nothing. That is a normal first evening with a pedestal fan, and it is usually assembly and batteries rather than a broken motor. This page is how to use a pedestal fan once you own one: a stable base, a shut guard, a breeze aimed past you, and a point where you unplug it. Model choice sits on the [pedestal fan with remote control comparison](/hub/cooling/pedestal-fan-with-remote-control). Before you switch it on

Stand the base on a flat floor, not on a rug that lets it walk. Fit every pole section until it stops rocking. On the black DREO, reviewers say the fan rocks if you leave out the screw under the base. Tighten the guard. Amazon Basics owners find most fixings are thumbscrews, while the guard screw needs a Phillips screwdriver even when the listing says no tools. A half-clipped guard rattles, and it keeps fingers out of the blades. Electrical Safety First expects a UK 3-pin plug with a fuse on a mains fan. If the cable is cut, the plug is cracked, or the socket smells hot, stop and unplug. That is a job for a qualified electrician or a return. Do not hard-wire the fan. Charge a Shark-style battery fan on a sound cable, not on a bed. A patio line with no IP rating is not an outdoor rating. Run the lowest speed for a minute. Stop if you smell burning. A slight plastic smell on a first run can pass. A hot, sharp smell is a stop.

Remote, timer, and aim

If the handset is dead, fit batteries before you assume a fault. Amazon Basics and ROVSUN reviews say the remote needs two AAA cells that are not in the box. Some Amazon Basics owners still need several presses, and the fan beeps each time. A DREO remote can mute those beeps, often with a press-and-hold, and the buttons glow. The Air Pro speaks or beeps, and several reviewers could not mute it, including beeps while the fan was off. Return a voice fan you cannot silence. Set the timer for the time you will be in the room. These listings run from 7.5 to 12 hours. Point the head along the bed, not into your face. GOV.UK says not to aim a fan straight at the body. A 180° Shark sweep, or the ROVSUN’s 60–120° range, can be too much in a narrow bedroom. If the sweep stalls, switch oscillation off rather than nudging a powered head. The Shark’s infrared remote has clashed with a television handset for some owners. Night noise is on the quiet pedestal fan for the bedroom page.

Cleaning

Unplug the fan, and disconnect a charging cable, before you open the guard. Let the blades stop. Wipe the blades and the inside of the guard with a dry or barely damp cloth. Do not put the motor, the remote, or the control panel in water. Let every part dry before you rebuild it. Seat the guard before you restore power. Dust on the blades makes a tick, and a missing clip makes a rattle. Do not oil a sealed motor. Store the fan upright, somewhere dry, and do not leave a battery fan charging on a lead that feels warm.

When to turn it off

Electrical Safety First advises you not to leave a fan running overnight or while you are out. A timer limits an evening. It is not a certificate for all-night running. Switch the fan off when you leave the house. If someone is unwell from the heat, follow NHS advice: fans can help below 35°C, with fluids and a cooler room. Use 999 in an emergency. A fan does not lower the room by a set number of degrees. Stop and unplug if the smell turns sharp, the plug discolours, the lead is damaged, or a circuit keeps tripping. If the plug in the box is not a fused 13 A type, do not force it into a UK socket with a loose adaptor. Plug checks are on the buying guide.

Common questions

Why is the remote dead out of the box?
On the Amazon Basics and ROVSUN fans, reviewers found that the handset takes two AAA batteries and that the box did not include them. Fit those first, point the remote at the front of the head, and try again from close range. Some Amazon Basics owners still need more than one press. If a fresh set of cells does nothing and the buttons on the fan itself work, the handset is the faulty part. If the fan’s own buttons do nothing either, stop and unplug it.
Where should I stand it next to a bed?
On the floor, base flat, lead where you will not trip, head high enough to clear the mattress. Tilt the airflow along the bed or across the room so it is not blowing into your face. GOV.UK advises against aiming a fan straight at the body. A lead that reviewers put at about 1.5 m on a DREO will not reach a far socket, so move the fan to the socket rather than running a coiled extension under a duvet.
Can I leave it on all night?
Electrical Safety First says not to leave a fan on overnight or while you are out. Listings still print timers of 7.5, 8, or 12 hours, and many people use them for sleep. A timer does not cancel that advice. If you use one, use a low speed, keep the airflow off your face, and treat any burning smell, new rattle, or hot plug as a reason to switch off at once. The NHS fan advice is for heat below 35°C, not for an unattended appliance.
How do I clean the blades?
Unplug the fan and wait until the blades have stopped. Remove the front guard, wipe the blades and the grille with a dry or slightly damp cloth, and let every part dry before you close the guard and plug in again. Do not immerse the motor or the remote. Do not oil the motor. If the guard uses a screw, put that screw back. A ticking noise after cleaning is usually a clip that is not seated.
The fan talks or beeps. What now?
A beep on each press is normal on several of these remotes. On DREO reviews, a press-and-hold on the remote can mute it. On the Air Pro, reviewers say spoken prompts or beeps continue after they try to mute them, sometimes while the fan is switched off. Try the mute once, in daylight, using the manual for that model. If the voice will not stop, that is a fault to return, not a bedroom setting to tolerate.
Can I use it in the bathroom or the garden?
Not unless that exact listing says it is suitable, and a bathroom is a poor place for an ordinary indoor pedestal. Water and a mains fan do not mix. Most of the fans in this comparison are indoor floor fans. The Shark bullets describe indoor or outdoor use and a mist clip that needs a hose, while its table says indoor, so read the live page and keep the remote dry. A generic listing that names a patio, with no IP rating, is not an outdoor specification.
