Ceiling fan buying guide

Updated: 21 October 2026

You are shortlisting a ceiling fan before you have put a tape on the ceiling. A ceiling fan buying guide only helps if the first checks are the ones that make a fan unusable: the voltage on the listing, the height you can give the blades, and the span in centimetres rather than the number in the title. Stars come after those three. The full table, with prices captured on 19 October 2026, stays on the [ceiling fan comparison](/hub/cooling/ceiling-fan). Peter F. used those listings and public UK fitting notes. There was no lab test. A qualifying purchase can earn a commission at no extra cost to you.

Check the voltage on the listing

UK mains are a nominal 230 V supply. A usable listing in this set states 220 V, 230 V, or 240 V. The Ohniyou 52 inch fan at about £109.99 states 110 V and carries 4.2 from 1,713 reviews, the largest count here. That count does not put a 110 V fan on a normal ceiling rose. A blank voltage, as on the SANYCASA and FIBRAVE rows, is a question for the plate. The Vecrysit socket fan prints both 120 V and 230 V. The FIBRAVE at about £18.99 and the Vecrysit at about £33.99 screw into an E27 or B22 holder. They are not the joist-fixed fan this guide is sizing.

Match the mount to the ceiling

A lot of UK ceilings finish around 2.3 m to 2.4 m, which is why flush fans dominate this scrape. Flush means the housing sits close to the ceiling. It does not mean every body is the same depth. The Ensenior is sold as a 50 cm flush fan for low ceilings. The CHANFOK 16 inch body is 13 cm deep. The Depuley 42 inch body is 27 cm on the dimension line, which is semi-flush, not a flat hugger. The IZOWE includes 10 cm and 20 cm rods. If you cannot meet the manual’s distance from the floor to the lowest point, including the light, you do not fit that fan. Measuring the drop is the low ceiling page.

Read the span in centimetres

Fifty centimetres is not a 52 inch fan written in metric. A 52 inch fan is about 132 cm across. A 42 inch fan is about 107 cm. The Ensenior, the DWDVBL listings, and the RLMIEL 50 cm are small flush fan-lights. They can suit a box room and they are a poor match for a long living room. The Depuley 52 inch row is one of the few where 132 cm agrees with the title. The white RLMIEL titled 42 inch has a 50 cm body line. That conflict is a reason to stop, not a puzzle to average. Keep the blade tips off the walls by the gap your manual states. Named picks inside this set are on the best ceiling fan page.

Then choose light, speeds, and motor

Most of these listings are a fan and an LED, with a remote and often an app. That helps when this fitting replaces the only ceiling point, and it is a nuisance when the room is already lit. Check that the fan and the light can run separately. A dimmer already on the lighting circuit is a known cause of misbehaviour. Plan a plain switch rather than hoping the remote will override it. DC is the common motor claim, often about 20 W to 48 W. The RLMIEL 50 cm says AC and 48 W. The Ensenior bullet says 30 W and the technical line says 40 W, so do not quote one draw. A bare decibel number is a seller sentence. At Ofgem’s 26.32 p/kWh rate for October to December 2026 in Great Britain, a 40 W fan for eight hours is about 8 pence, a rule of thumb, not a meter reading.

Common questions

What size ceiling fan do I need for a bedroom?
A small bedroom is often in the 50 cm flush group in this set, not the 52 inch group. A 52 inch fan is about 132 cm across, and it only belongs if the room and the ceiling can take it on a lower speed. Fantasia and Broughtons publish different spans for similar rooms, so treat both as sketches. Measure the room, keep the tips off the walls as the manual says, and use the main comparison once the centimetres are real.
Is 50 cm the same kind of fan as 52 inch?
No. Fifty centimetres is about 20 inches. Fifty-two inches is about 132 cm. The 50 cm listings here are small flush fan-lights. A title that says 42 inch beside a 50 cm body, as on one RLMIEL page, is a conflict, not a translation. Read the dimension line in centimetres before you compare stars.
Will it work on UK mains?
Only if the listing or the plate is 220 V, 230 V, or 240 V. UK supply is nominally 230 V. The Ohniyou row states 110 V, so leave it for a normal ceiling rose. A blank voltage, or a line that prints 120 V and 230 V together, means you confirm the plate. Do not infer 230 V from a UK delivery address.
Do I need a light in the fan?
You need a light if this fitting is replacing the only ceiling light. You do not need one if the room is already lit and you only want air. Most listings here include an LED and a remote. Check that the fan can run with the light off. A dimmer left on the old switch is a common reason these fan-lights misbehave.
How much does it cost to run?
At Ofgem’s average electricity rate of 26.32 p/kWh for 1 October to 31 December 2026 in Great Britain, a 40 W fan for eight hours is about 8 pence. That is a rule of thumb for 40 W, not a meter reading for a named fan. Northern Ireland is outside that cap. The purchase price and the fitting matter more than the overnight pence.
Can I use it outdoors if the listing says indoor and outdoor?
Not on that sentence alone. In this set, an outdoor title sometimes sits next to “not water resistant”, and no IP rating is printed. Keep those fans indoors unless the manual for that model states a location you actually have. A bathroom or an exposed porch needs a different product.
