Garden ponds

Updated: 22 October 2026Hub page

Garden ponds is the kit for a pond in a British garden, from the liner or membrane and the bowl to the pump, the filter and the plants. A wildlife pond and a pond with goldfish or koi do not ask for the same flow, the same ice plan or the same planting.

Choose the card that matches the job. A mains pump, a solar fountain, a UV clarifier, a cover net and a sludge treatment are different products, and the listing details stay on the comparison so this page can stay put when a listing changes.

These guides are the jobs around the pond, not another product card. They cover green water and blanketweed, ice, plants you must not release, a small wildlife pond, and whether a solar pump can stand in for a mains one.

Common questions about garden ponds

What does this hub cover?
Garden ponds on this hub is the equipment for a pond in the United Kingdom. The cards cover liners and thinner membranes, bowls and bridges, pumps and filters, plants and food, and treatments for green water, blanketweed and sludge. Winter cards cover a de-icer, a heater and an air pump. Each card is one product type, and the comparison holds the current amazon.co.uk listings. Products Compared did not run a laboratory test. A qualifying purchase can earn a commission at no extra cost to you.
How do you choose a pond pump?
A pond pump moves water to a fountain, a waterfall or a filter. The litres-per-hour figure on the box is the maximum flow at almost no lift, so the flow at the height you actually pump is lower. A fine fountain intake and a pump that passes solids fail in opposite ponds. A solar pump is a daytime feature. It does not replace a mains pump that must run after dark, and circulation is not a filter. Decide the job, then the head, then the plug.
What is the difference between green water and blanketweed?
Green pond water is suspended algae you cannot lift on a stick. Blanketweed is the hair-like strands you can rake out. A UV clarifier is a lamp in the return pipe, and it needs a pump and a filter already fitted. A blanketweed treatment is for those strands. A pond clear clumps debris so a filter can catch it. They are not substitutes, and none of them is a reason to empty the pond first.
Does a wildlife pond need a filter?
A wildlife pond with no fish often needs no pump and no filter. The Royal Horticultural Society makes that point, and if you still add flow the intake must not swallow tadpoles. A goldfish or koi pond is different: the fish add waste, so a filter, and often air, is part of keeping the water usable. Plants, a shallow edge and a way out matter more than a UV lamp. A patio bowl is still a pond, and anything that climbs in needs a way out.
How do a pond liner and a pond membrane differ?
A pond liner is the waterproof sheet for a dug or raised garden pond. In the UK, flexible butyl, EPDM or thicker PVC is the usual way to choose your own shape, often around 0.75 mm or 1.0 mm. The membrane cards here are thin polyethylene films, mostly a fraction of a millimetre. A thin film can line a trough. It is not a rubber liner for a full garden pond. Measure the hole, including depth and overlap, before you open a card.
What should you do when a pond freezes?
For fish, the job is a hole in the ice so gases can leave and oxygen can enter. It is not a warm pond, and it is not a sheet you smash. A de-icer is sold to keep that patch open. An air pump can hold a hole if the stone sits off the floor. A planted wildlife pond with little waste often needs no heater. Melt a hole from the bank if the ice is already solid. Outdoor electrical kit still needs a dry supply.
What should you check before you plug a pump or a heater in?
UK mains are a nominal 230 V, and a garden appliance should have a BS 1363 plug. A low-voltage pump can still arrive with a mains converter, and that converter stays dry. The cable has to reach the pond without a coiled extension on wet ground. Use a 30 mA RCD on the outdoor circuit. A solar pump avoids the socket, and it also stops when the light goes. Read the voltage and the plug on the comparison before you treat the listing as ready to go in the water.
Where should you start?
Start with the pond you have, or the hole you have not dug. A wildlife tub needs a liner or a bowl, plants and a way out, and often no pump. A goldfish pond needs a pump sized for the head you lift, then a filter, food and a plan for ice. Green water and blanketweed are different jobs, so open the card that matches what you can see. If the waterline falls, check the rim and the pump before you assume the sheet has a hole.
