Pond net for herons

Updated: 22 October 2026

A heron has taken fish, and the cover you are looking at says heron protection in the bullet. A pond net for a heron is a barrier only while the mesh is small enough and the sheet stays taut, and it is not a licence to trap or injure a wild bird. This page is that limit, using the covers in this amazon.co.uk set and the UK guides that actually state a mesh. Prices and rows are on the [pond net comparison](/hub/garden-ponds/pond-net). Peter F. did not watch a heron and did not run a lab test. A qualifying purchase can earn us a commission at no extra cost to you.

What the guides require

FBAS says heron netting should be smaller than 2.5 cm and kept taut. A heron can put its neck through about 5 cm and reach down about 60 cm. Nothing is fully effective. Bow Garden Centre uses about 2.5 cm so the bird is not trapped, or a net at least 60 cm above the water. Do not collapse those two lines. How to pull a sheet off the water is on how to net a pond.

What these covers actually print

AlpineReach prints 1 cm, which meets the FBAS mesh line on paper and still fails if the sheet sags. The 4.5 m by 6 m file copies the square’s review text, so 4.6 from 5,776 is not a separate heron trial. Blagdon at £13.09 says fine and prints no millimetres. Measure that sheet before you claim it meets the line. Choosing the cover for leaves first is on the pond net buying guide.

What you must not do to the bird

The grey heron is a wild bird. The Wildlife and Countryside Act 1981 makes intentional killing, injuring or capture an offence. A pond cover is a barrier, not a trap and not a licence. GOV.UK describes netting as a non-lethal step in England. Lethal control needs a licence. Keep the sheet sound and free a trapped bird the same day. The sheet-versus-pole choice is on pond skimmer or cover net.

When a loose sheet is the wrong tool

A loose sheet is the wrong tool when you cannot keep it off the water. Skip a cover on a wildlife pond if you follow the Wildlife Trusts. Try a taut AlpineReach sheet when you accept a 1 cm claim and you will check for trapped animals. Try Blagdon only after you measure the hole. If you cannot keep either sheet taut, the next step is another barrier.

Common questions

Will a pond net stop a heron?
It can deter one while the mesh stays smaller than about 2.5 cm and the sheet stays taut and off the water. FBAS says nothing is fully effective, and a heron can reach about 60 cm through a gap. AlpineReach prints 1 cm. Blagdon prints fine and no millimetres. A slack net, or a pole you use in the afternoon, is not this barrier.
What mesh size do the UK guides use?
FBAS says smaller than 2.5 cm, kept taut, because a neck can pass about 5 cm. Bow Garden Centre says about 2.5 cm so the bird is not trapped, or the net at least 60 cm above the water. AlpineReach’s printed 1 cm meets the FBAS figure on paper. There is no British Standard for pond mesh in this file, so the listing’s own number is what you can check.
Does the net have to be above the water?
Yes, if you are following these guides. A sheet lying on the water lets a heron stand on it and reach down. Bow’s alternative to a fine mesh is clearance of at least 60 cm. FBAS pairs a small mesh with tension. Reviews of the covers here already say the mesh sags when it is not pulled tight. Pegs that snap put it back on the water by the next morning.
Is it legal to cover a pond because of herons?
A cover used as a non-lethal barrier is the kind of step GOV.UK describes for England. The Wildlife and Countryside Act 1981 still protects the bird. You must not set the net to kill, injure or capture it. Keep the sheet sound and free anything that is caught. Lethal control is a licensing question, not a feature of a £13 or £20 cover.
What if a heron or another bird gets stuck?
Free it if you can do that without further injury. If you cannot, call the RSPCA on 0300 1234 999 in England and Wales, and use the local rescue service in Scotland or Northern Ireland. The RSPB’s netting note puts that duty on the owner. Do not wait, and do not cut a hole and leave the rest of the sheet slack over the pond.
Is 1 cm better than an unstated fine?
It is better as a buying fact, because you can compare 1 cm with the FBAS line of smaller than 2.5 cm. Fine on the Blagdon listing cannot be compared until you measure it. A review that guesses 2.5 cm is not the specification. One centimetre still fails if the sheet sags, and it is coarser than a 3–7 mm leaf mesh some garden guides prefer for small debris.
Is this the same as making the pond safe for a child?
No. RoSPA’s advice for children is a rigid grille, a 1.1 m fence, or filling the pond in. A heron cover is a flexible sheet with pegs or stakes. It is not a grille, and a child can be at risk on a sagging net over water. Treat the two jobs as different products.
