How to net a pond

Updated: 22 October 2026

The cover has arrived, and the usual failure is a sheet that sags into the water or will not peg down on paving. This is how to net a pond with the covers in this amazon.co.uk set: measure the ground you can fix to, add an overlap you can name, pull the mesh off the water, and replace a plastic peg with a weight where the edge is hard. Product rows and prices are on the [pond net comparison](/hub/garden-ponds/pond-net). Peter F. used the listings and the public fitting notes, and did not fit a net in a lab. Measure before you open the pack

Measure the water, then the points where a peg or a weight can sit. A pond that is already 3 m by 2 m does not fit the Blagdon once you add overlap. The AlpineReach square title says 4.5 m by 4.5 m and the dimensions field says 4.27 m by 4.27 m. The longer title says 4.5 m by 6 m and the dimensions field says 6.1 m by 4.57 m. Tape the sheet when it arrives and trust the smaller field. Which cover to buy is on the pond net buying guide.

Fix the edge you actually have

Soil can take a peg. Paving, decking and the lip of a liner often cannot. Blagdon includes six fixing pegs. AlpineReach includes stakes and does not print how many. Reviews repeat plastic pegs that snap. Drive nothing through the liner. If the only margin is slabs, plan weights before you open the packet. Fix one side first, on the edge you can trust, and pull toward the opposite side. The heron version of tight enough is on pond net for herons.

Get it off the water

Empty leaves before they are wet. A slack net collects a puddle, then leaves, then more weight. The Royal Horticultural Society puts covers on when autumn leaf fall is excessive, not as a permanent lid. A gap left overnight is the opening a heron uses.

After wind and leaf fall

Check the edge after the first windy night. A peg that has lifted, or a basket that has walked, puts a bow in the sheet by morning. Walk the perimeter and look under the mesh. A bird, a hedgehog or a frog can be in a fold. If an animal is trapped and you cannot free it safely, use a rescue line rather than cutting a hole you then leave open. Which row matches a leaf job is on best pond net.

Common questions

When should the cover go on?
When leaf fall is excessive, which is the Royal Horticultural Society’s autumn line, not on the first yellow leaf and not as a year-round lid. October is the month their pond calendar talks about placing nets. Take it off when the fall eases, unless you are keeping a taut barrier for a heron and you are checking it. A cover in June does not replace skimming duckweed.
How much overlap do I add?
About 50 cm on length and width if you follow Thrive or David Domoney, or about 20–30 cm if you follow GardenSkill. Use the larger figure you have room to fix. Measure to the peg or the weight, not only to the water. A Blagdon stated at 3 m by 2 m has no spare once the pond itself is that size.
What if I only have paving?
Do not rely on the pegs in the box. Blagdon’s six pegs and AlpineReach’s uncounted stakes are what these listings include, and reviews describe plastic pegs that snap. Weight the edge, as buyers do with pebble baskets, or use a frame. Do not drive a stake through the liner to borrow a fixing the patio does not have.
How tight is tight enough?
Tight enough that the mesh stays off the water, including after rain, and does not sag into a belly you can push down to the surface. Pull from one fixed side toward the other. A net that touches the water will hold leaves, and those leaves will pull it down further. Reviews of these covers already describe that sag.
Can I cut the net?
AlpineReach’s listing says the net can be cut. Blagdon’s does not print that line. Cut only after the sheet is tensioned, so you keep the overlap. A neat edge that is the same size as the water will sit in the pond. The dimensions field may already be smaller than the title, so measure before you shorten anything.
How do I feed fish without leaving a gap?
These listings do not print a feeding flap. Lift one edge, feed, and put the weight or peg back the same day so the sheet is taut again. A corner left open overnight is a gap, not a door. If you need daily access and the sheet will not go back, a cover is the wrong tool for that pond and a skimmer is the daytime job.
When is this a job for a frame rather than pegs?
When the edge is hard all the way round and weights will not hold a taut sheet, or when the aim is a child grille rather than leaves. RoSPA’s pond advice is a rigid grille, a 1.1 m fence, or filling the pond in. A frame that holds mesh clear of the water is also the step when a loose sheet sags under a heron. Pegs that snap on paving will not become that frame.
