Pond bacteria buying guide

Updated: 22 October 2026

You have a box filter or a pressurized drum, goldfish or koi, and a search page full of gels, balls and bottles that all say bacteria. A pond bacteria buying guide only helps if you name the job before the brand. A new or cleaned filter, ammonia or nitrite on a test kit, monthly care of water that already looks acceptable, and suspended green water are four different purchases. The nine amazon.co.uk listings, with prices in GBP as they stood on 19 October 2026, are on the [pond bacteria comparison](/hub/garden-ponds/pond-bacteria). We did not run a lab test. A qualifying purchase can earn a commission at no extra cost to you.

Name the job before the brand

Start with what the water is doing this week, not with the star sort. If the filter is new, you have just rinsed the biological media, or it is the first warm week of spring and the film has been idle, you are buying a starter. If a test kit shows ammonia or nitrite, you are still in that starter job even when the pond looks clear. If the tests are already quiet and you want a monthly habit, you are buying maintenance. If the water is pea soup, you are buying for suspended algae, or you are buying a UV clarifier and leaving the bacterial shelf alone. A 2,000 litre goldfish pond that reads ammonia after a new foam goes in is not solved by a neighbour's monthly bottle.

Match the form to where it goes

Gel is for media you can touch. ARKA Pond Gel Filter is drawn in lines on wet media and left for 15–30 minutes, from 7 °C. Evolution Aqua PURE+ Filter Start Gel is poured on new media and is stated for 25,000 litres. NT Labs Pond Mature goes into the filter as a dose. Pure Pond balls are a monthly addition to the biological chamber. Envii Pond Klear Xtra is mixed at 10 ml per 1,000 litres into a bucket of pond water and spread. The 500 ml Pure Pond field says Liquid while the bullets describe balls. Where each millilitre goes is on how to dose pond bacteria.

Match the tub to your litres and the price band

Measure the water before you compare shelf prices. Pure Pond 500 ml is £12.45, sized by the maker for up to 10,000 litres. NT Labs Mature is £20.39, titled for 18,200 litres. Pond Klear Xtra is £31.95. PURE+ gel is £41.45 for a stated 25,000 litres. ARKA Pond Gel is £10.93 with no litre figure, and Nite-Out II is £62.37. A cheap bottle that cannot cover the pond is the expensive mistake. The 4.5 from 3,692 on the three Pure Pond sizes is one shared pool. Only Mature and the 2.5 litre gel say you cannot overdose.

Who should skip which pack

A wildlife pond with few or no fish may not need any of these. Skip Nite-Out II on a small goldfish pond: £62.37 and eight reviews, with no UK text, is a large-pond bottle. Skip the £10.93 gel if you need a litre figure before you dose. Call a specialist when fish are gasping, or when a product claims to kill algae and you cannot see an authorisation number. None of the nine listings showed one. The one-pack choices are on best pond bacteria. Ammonia on a new filter is on pond filter start bacteria.

Common questions

Do I need pond bacteria if the pond has few fish and plenty of plants?
Often no. The Royal Horticultural Society says ponds with few or no fish may not need a filter at all, and shade plus plants do more for a wildlife pond than a monthly tub. A stocked goldfish or koi pond is different, because the filter's bacterial film is what turns ammonia into less harmful nitrate. Bacteria in a bottle do not replace that film overnight.
Is a gel, a liquid, or a ball the right form for a new filter?
Gel or a named nitrifying liquid, not a monthly ball. PURE+ gel and ARKA gel go on media you can reach. NT Labs Mature is the liquid in this set titled as a filter kick-start, with a double dose at the beginning. Pure Pond balls are sold for water you are already keeping.
Can I use Pure Pond balls to clear green water?
The maker says no. Pure Pond is monthly maintenance above 10 °C, and the product page tells you to use an appropriate UV clarifier for green water. UK reviews in the shared file repeat the same limit: pea soup stays green and sludge is not removed.
Which kept pack is for ammonia and nitrite, and which is only monthly maintenance?
NT Labs Mature, PURE+ gel, ARKA Special Blend and ARKA Nite-Out II are the listings that talk about ammonia and nitrite at the start or after a clean. Pure Pond's bullets are monthly maintenance of ammonia, nitrite and water that is already being kept. Pond Klear Xtra is sold for green and murky water. A quiet test kit plus a monthly habit is the ball. A spike on the kit is the starter.
Why is Pond Klear Xtra titled for 100,000 litres?
The dose on the listing is 10 ml per 1,000 litres, and the bottle is 1,000 ml, so the arithmetic is one hundred doses of that rate, not one treatment of a 100,000 litre pond. The listing also says a pond under 20,000 litres gets more than one treatment from the bottle. Read the title as a stock of doses.
