Pond bacteria on amazon.co.uk are cultures you add so a garden pond filter can turn fish waste into less harmful nitrate, or so a blend can work on the organic matter behind murky water. Most UK buyers keep goldfish or koi with a filter. Quality is the match between the job and the form: a gel or a named nitrifier for a new filter, slow-release balls for monthly maintenance, and a green-water liquid only when the label is actually about green water. Evolution says Pure Pond balls are not for clearing green water. The Royal Horticultural Society still treats a UV clarifier plus filtration as the direct answer to suspended algae. How to choose by job, form and litres is in the [pond bacteria buying guide](/hub/garden-ponds/pond-bacteria/sub/pond-bacteria-buying-guide). On amazon.co.uk the nine kept listings are not one product. How that looks in a garden pond, and what a bacterial bottle will not do, is in [green pond water](/hub/garden-ponds/blog/green-pond-water). Aquatic algaecides and aquarium bacteria are outside this comparison.

Pond bacteria on amazon.co.uk are cultures you add so a garden pond filter can turn fish waste into less harmful nitrate, or so a blend can work on the organic matter behind murky water.

The best pond bacteria in detail

NT Labs Pond Mature, 1 litre

Rank 1

NT Labs Pond Mature, 1 litre

∼£20

Our view

NT Labs Pond Mature is a 1 litre liquid at about £20.39, titled for 18,200 litres, and the listing names Nitrosomonas, Nitrobacter and Nitrospira among seven species. You work the dose from length times width times depth in centimetres, divided by 1,000, then double it for a new pond, a new filter, or the start of the season, and the bullets point weekly use at ammonia and nitrite spikes. Across 4.6 from 222 amazon.co.uk reviews, the 47 UK texts in the file are mostly about new filters, new koi ponds and the start of the season. One keeper describes ammonia falling from 1 ppm to 0.2 ppm in three days. Another still had nitrite after two bottles over a couple of months, and a Belfast-sink pond stayed like algae soup. The container is called awkward, and several short five-star lines do not describe a result. Temperature and a UV interval are not printed on this listing. It is the top pick here for a new or cleaned filter at a mid price, with a named nitrifier and a UK review file, not a clarifier for pea soup.

Pros

  • 4.6 from 222 reviews, with 47 UK texts in the file
  • Title treats 18,200 litres, with a centimetre volume formula
  • Named nitrifying species, and a double dose at the start
  • One review records ammonia from 1 ppm to 0.2 ppm in three days

Cons

  • Nitrite still present after two bottles in one review
  • No temperature and no UV interval on the listing
  • Container called awkward, and some reviews report no change
  • Success notes often sit next to a filter clean or a water change

Best for: A new filter, a cleaned filter, or a weekly response to an ammonia or nitrite spike on a goldfish or koi pond inside the title volume.

Less suitable: Monthly care of water that already tests fine, or green water you hoped a nitrifier would clear.

Common questions

How do you work out the dose?

Length times width times depth in centimetres, divided by 1,000. Double that dose at the start of the season or for a new pond or filter. Weekly use is for ammonia and nitrite spikes.

Does the listing say you cannot overdose?

Not in the bullets. One UK review title says you cannot overdose. The title treat line is 18,200 litres. The maker’s page is the place that says you cannot overdose.

What do the UK reviews repeat?

New filters and new koi ponds are the usual success. One keeper reports ammonia from 1 ppm to 0.2 ppm in three days. Another still had nitrite after two bottles. The count is 4.6 from 222.

Evolution Aqua PURE+ Filter Start Gel, 2.5 litres

Rank 2

Evolution Aqua PURE+ Filter Start Gel, 2.5 litres

∼£41

Our view

Evolution Aqua PURE+ Filter Start Gel is a 2.5 litre gel at about £41.45 that you put directly on new filter media, with a stated treatment of 25,000 litres and a listing line that you cannot overdose. The star line is 4.6 from 198 reviews, and 31 UK texts describe a spring kick-start, including use on K1 media and repeat purchases the next spring. Nitrite coming down is described as slow, one review says it did nothing, and several call the gel expensive. Applying it means the filter comes apart, which reviewers note can set the cycle back. Temperature and a UV interval are not printed on this amazon file. The bullets call it safe for fish, plants and wildlife, which is a seller claim, and saltwater and algae questions on the page are unanswered. It is the gel to pour on new media when the 25,000 litre line matches the pond and you will pay more than the NT Labs liquid. It is a poor fit for a tiny pond or for green water.

Pros

  • Gel on the media, stated for 25,000 litres
  • 4.6 from 198 reviews, with a spring kick-start as the usual note
  • Listing says you cannot overdose
  • Used on K1 media in the saved UK texts

Cons

  • About £41.45, and reviewers call it expensive
  • Nitrite drop described as slow, with one total failure
  • You have to open the filter to apply it
  • No temperature and no UV interval on this amazon listing

Best for: New biological media on a pond that fits the 25,000 litre line, when you want gel that sticks rather than a pour-in liquid.

Less suitable: A small goldfish filter already covered by a cheaper nitrifier, or pea-soup water.

Common questions

What is this gel for?

New pond filters. The bullets say it sticks to the media and is meant to mature that media faster than a liquid or tablets. The treat line is 25,000 litres, and the listing says you cannot overdose.

Does the listing answer saltwater or algae?

No. Those two questions are on the page and unanswered. Fish, plants and wildlife are called safe as a listing claim. Koi are not named on their own.

What do the UK reviews repeat?

A spring kick-start is the usual use. Nitrite coming down is described as slow. One review says it did nothing, and several call it expensive. The count is 4.6 from 198.

Evolution Aqua Pure Pond, 1 litre

Rank 3

Evolution Aqua Pure Pond, 1 litre

∼£19

Our view

The Evolution Aqua Pure Pond 1 litre tub is about £19.45, and the item-form field says biodegradable balls, which matches the bullets, unlike the 500 ml row. It carries the same 4.5 from 3,692 and the same first 50 UK texts as the other two sizes. Reviewers describe clearer water when the balls go into the filter each month, often in a drawstring bag, and they also say the change takes a couple of weeks rather than hours. This amazon file still prints no ball count and no litre treat figure, so you cannot size the tub from the listing alone. The maker’s band for this size is up to 20,000 litres. Those shared UK texts repeat that pea-soup water stays green and that sludge is not removed. Listed weight is 690 g. Choose this size when you want the form field to agree with the balls and a larger tub than 500 ml. Skip it if the problem in front of you is green water.

Pros

  • Item form says biodegradable balls, matching the bullets
  • Same 4.5 from the 3,692-review pool as the other sizes
  • Filter placement, often in a bag, is what the saved reviews describe
  • 1 litre at about £19.45, with 690 g on the listing

Cons

  • No ball count and no treat volume in this amazon file
  • Pea soup and sludge are the usual complaints in the shared texts
  • The 3,692 count is not a separate proof from the 500 ml file
  • Described as slow: a couple of weeks, not hours

Best for: Monthly maintenance when you want a larger tub than 500 ml and a form field that says balls.

Less suitable: A green pond, or a first fill where you need a printed millilitre table on the listing.

Common questions

How much of the 1 litre tub goes in?

The bullets say monthly, into the filter for the best result. They do not print a ball count or a litre treat figure for this tub. The maker’s band for 1 litre is up to 20,000 litres.

What do the UK reviews repeat?

The 50 texts match the other Pure Pond sizes. Clearer water in the filter is the usual note. Pea soup and missing dose instructions are the usual complaints.

Does the listing name a temperature?

No. This amazon file has no degree line and no UV interval. The maker’s support page is for water above 10 °C.

Evolution Aqua Pure Pond, 500 ml

Rank 4

Evolution Aqua Pure Pond, 500 ml

∼£12

Our view

The Evolution Aqua Pure Pond 500 ml is listed at about £12.45 as monthly maintenance for ammonia, nitrite and water you are already keeping, and the bullets say the filter gives the best result. The amazon.co.uk line is 4.5 from 3,692 reviews, and the same first 50 UK texts sit on the 1 litre and 2 litre files, so that count is one pool rather than three proofs. Keepers who hang a drawstring bag in the media describe clearer water on a monthly habit, including a 700 litre sleeper pond at about a tablespoon a month, and several say they have reordered for years. The same texts say it does not turn pea-soup water clear and does not remove sludge, and that the tub prints no dose, so the amount is a guess. The item-form field says Liquid while the bullets describe biodegradable polymer balls. A shattered tub with product loose in the parcel is in the file. It is the best value here on price and review volume, if your water is already acceptable and you are not buying it to clear green water.

Pros

  • About £12.45, the lowest price among the rows with at least 1,000 reviews
  • Monthly balls that UK reviewers put in a bag in the filter
  • Repeat-buy notes, including a 700 litre pond at about a tablespoon a month
  • 4.5 from a 3,692-review pool shared across the three sizes

Cons

  • Does not clear pea-soup water or sludge in the saved UK reviews
  • No dose amount and no treat volume on this amazon file
  • Item-form field says Liquid while the bullets describe balls
  • One report of a shattered tub in the parcel

Best for: Monthly care of a pond whose water you are already keeping, when you will size the tub from the maker’s band rather than a missing amazon dose line.

Less suitable: Pea-soup water, or a new filter that still needs a starter on the media.

Common questions

Is this the product for green water?

The bullets call it monthly maintenance, not an emergency treatment. In the 50 UK reviews, keepers say it does not turn pea-soup water clear and does not remove sludge. The maker says the same.

Why does the form field say Liquid?

The item-form field on this 500 ml listing says Liquid. The bullets describe biodegradable polymer balls. The 1 litre listing in this set says Biodegradable Balls.

Are the 3,692 reviews only about 500 ml?

In this scrape the same 4.5 from 3,692 and the same first 50 UK texts are also on the 1 litre and 2 litre Pure Pond files.

Evolution Aqua Pure Pond, 2 litres

Rank 5

Evolution Aqua Pure Pond, 2 litres

∼£32

Our view

The Evolution Aqua Pure Pond 2 litre tub is about £32.45 and 1.6 kg, with the same monthly-maintenance bullets as the smaller sizes and the same 4.5 from 3,692. The item-form field on this listing says Granules, while the bullets still describe biodegradable polymer balls, so the spec row disagrees with itself. The first 50 UK texts are the same file as the 500 ml and 1 litre rows: clearer water when the balls sit in the filter, often in a bag, and no clearance of pea soup or sludge. A 700 litre pond at about a tablespoon a month is in those texts, which is a small-pond habit rather than proof that you need 2 litres. The maker’s band for 2 litres is up to 40,000 litres. No temperature and no UV interval are printed here. At more than double the 500 ml price, this tub fits only if you already know a larger monthly pack matches the pond. It is the wrong buy if you wanted a separate review trail or a green-water treatment.

Pros

  • 2 litres at about £32.45 when a larger monthly tub matches the pond
  • Same filter-bag habit in the shared UK texts
  • 4.5 from the shared 3,692-review pool
  • Bullets still describe balls and a monthly filter dose

Cons

  • Item-form field says Granules, not balls
  • Review texts are not unique to this size
  • No dose amount, temperature, or UV note in the file
  • Does not clear pea soup in those shared reviews

Best for: Monthly maintenance when you have measured the pond and a 2 litre tub is the size you meant to keep.

Less suitable: A small pond that a 500 ml tub already covers, or water that is already green.

Common questions

What does the form field say?

Granules. The bullets still describe biodegradable polymer balls, the same wording as the 500 ml and 1 litre listings.

Is the review count separate from the smaller tubs?

No. This file repeats the same 4.5 from 3,692 and the same first 50 UK texts as the 500 ml and 1 litre files.

Where do the reviews say to put the balls?

In the filter, often in a drawstring bag. One review says the product wording points at the filter even though the Amazon text also allows the pond.

ARKA Pond Gel Filter, 473 ml

Rank 6

ARKA Pond Gel Filter, 473 ml

∼£11

Our view

The ARKA Pond Gel Filter is a 473 ml gel at about £10.93 that you shake and draw in lines on wet filter media, then leave porous media for 15–30 minutes, with a start temperature of 7 °C on the listing. The amazon.co.uk line is 4.5 from 13 reviews, and the saved texts are one UK title, “Small but mighty”, whose body is the single word “Solid”, plus a Swedish note that it started a filter. Neither text states a fault, which is a thin file rather than a large UK sample. The listing says small to medium ponds and prints no litre figure and no millilitres-per-litre rate, so you cannot match the bottle to a measured pond before you buy. Fish safety is not printed; a question on the page asks whether it is safe for fish. Origin is given as the USA. It is a low-price gel for media you can already reach, and the missing treat volume is why it is not the default starter in this set.

Pros

  • 473 ml gel from 7 °C, drawn in lines on the filter media
  • About £10.93, the lowest shelf price in this comparison
  • 15–30 minutes on porous media is printed on the listing
  • The two saved reviews do not state a fault

Cons

  • Only 13 reviews, with two short texts in the file
  • No litre treat figure and no millilitres-per-litre dose
  • Fish safety is not printed on the listing

Best for: A small filter you can open, when you accept “small to medium” without a stated litre volume.

Less suitable: A pond you need to match to a printed treat volume, or a buy you want backed by a long UK review file.

Common questions

Where does this gel go?

The bullets say shake it, wet the filter medium in lines rather than over the whole surface, and leave porous media for 15–30 minutes. The start temperature on the listing is 7 °C.

How many litres does 473 ml treat?

The listing says small to medium pond systems. It does not print a litre figure or a millilitres-per-litre dose.

What do the reviews in the file say?

There is one UK line, “Small but mighty”, with the body “Solid”, and one Swedish line that it started a filter. Neither states a fault. The listing count is 13.

ARKA Nite-Out II, 5 litres

Rank 7

ARKA Nite-Out II, 5 litres

∼£62

Our view

ARKA Nite-Out II is a 5 litre liquid at about £62.37 for a new, spring, or cleaned pond, dosed to the water to build filter biology before koi and goldfish go in. The listing prints a millilitre table from 30 ml for up to 2,000 litres to 1,200 ml for 50,000 litres, a first-use treat line up to 205,000 litres, and conditions of 7 °C or warmer, KH of 6 °dH or more, and pH 7.2–8.4. The UV clarifier, the skimmer and ozone stay off for about 72 hours after each dose. The star line is 4.5 from 8 reviews, and the file has no UK text: a German note on nitrite in a koi pond, a one-word Spanish positive, and a note to store the opened bottle in the fridge. Follow-up doses need more product than the first use. At this price, with eight reviews, it is a large-pond starter with a real table, not a default bottle for a few thousand litres of goldfish water.

Pros

  • Printed millilitre table, from 7 °C, with KH and pH limits
  • UV, skimmer and ozone off for about 72 hours is on the listing
  • First-use line up to 205,000 litres on a 5 litre bottle
  • Aimed at ammonia and nitrite before fish are stocked

Cons

  • 4.5 from only 8 reviews, and no UK text in the file
  • Follow-up needs more product than the first dose
  • About £62.37 is the highest price in this set
  • One review says an opened bottle should go in the fridge

Best for: A large new, spring, or cleaned pond, when you can meet the KH and pH window and you will follow the table.

Less suitable: A small goldfish pond, or a buy you want backed by UK reviews before you spend about £62.37.

Common questions

What first dose is printed?

Up to 2,000 litres takes 30 ml. The table steps through 10,000 litres at 150 ml up to 50,000 litres at 1,200 ml. Follow-up is on days 8, 15, 22, 29 and then monthly, as per the label.

What has to be switched off?

The UV clarifier, the skimmer and ozone, for about 72 hours after each dose. The listing also wants 7 °C or warmer, KH of 6 °dH or more, and pH 7.2–8.4.

Is there a UK review in the file?

No. The star line is 4.5 from 8. The three texts are from other countries: a German note on nitrite in a koi pond, a one-word positive, and a note to store it in the fridge once opened.

Envii Pond Klear Xtra, 1 litre

Rank 8

Envii Pond Klear Xtra, 1 litre

∼£32

Our view

Envii Pond Klear Xtra is a 1 litre liquid at about £31.95, with United Kingdom as the origin on the listing, dosed at 10 ml per 1,000 litres from a measuring chamber, and a title that says up to 100,000 litres. That title is many doses, not one pour: a pond under 20,000 litres is said to get more than one treatment from the bottle. The bullets sell it for green and murky water, sludge levels, and the chance of blanket weed. Across 4.0 from 1,989 reviews, many of the 50 UK texts describe clearer water after days or weeks, including a neglected pond and one note of about 85,000 litres staying clear for a summer. Others are still green after 6 to 10 doses or a whole bottle, and the measuring chamber is called hard to fill. Blanket weed can remain after the water clears. No repeat interval and no temperature appear in the bullets. It is the only product in this set whose stated job is green water, and the split reviews mean a clear pond on a fixed day is not a promise.

Pros

  • 10 ml per 1,000 litres is printed, with a measuring chamber
  • 4.0 from 1,989 reviews on the green-water job in this set
  • United Kingdom origin on the listing, 1,000 ml at about £31.95
  • Some UK texts describe fish visible again after repeated doses

Cons

  • Still green after many doses or a whole bottle in other UK texts
  • Measuring chamber is hard to fill
  • No repeat interval and no temperature on the listing
  • Blanket weed still present after the water cleared, in the reviews

Best for: Suspended green or murky water, when you will repeat 10 ml per 1,000 litres and you can accept that some ponds in the reviews never cleared.

Less suitable: A new filter with ammonia on the test kit, or blanketweed on the liner as the only problem.

Common questions

What dose does this listing print?

10 ml per 1,000 litres. The bottle is 1,000 ml and the treat line says up to 100,000 litres. A pond under 20,000 litres is said to get more than one treatment from the bottle. The liquid-volume field copies 100,000 litres.

Does the listing say how often to use it?

No. Questions on the page ask about all seasons, fish harm, and how often. The bullets answer the fish line as a claim. They do not give a repeat interval.

What do the UK reviews repeat?

Of the 50 reviews read, many describe clearer water after days or weeks. Others are still green after 6 to 10 doses or a whole bottle. The measuring chamber is called hard to fill.

ARKA Special Blend, 946 ml

Rank 9

ARKA Special Blend, 946 ml

∼£20

Our view

ARKA Special Blend is a 946 ml liquid at about £19.73 with a printed start table from 7 °C, including 240 ml then 60 ml on days 8, 15, 22 and 29 for a pond up to 1,000 litres, and a treat line up to 29,950 litres. The listing tells you to switch the UV clarifier off for at least 24 hours after each dose, and to wait 72 hours after pesticides or algicides. The star line is 3.4 from 69 reviews, the lowest average in this set. Two UK texts are in the file: one on a golden orfe pond, and one that calls a half dose effective but very smelly in a planted discus aquarium rather than a pond. Other reviews repeat no visible change, a rotten-egg smell, a bottle that had turned, and one bottle that exploded in the carton. The listing does not say whether the dose goes into the filter or the pond, and fish safety is not printed. The schedule is specific, and the smell and spoiled-bottle notes are why this row scores lowest here.

Pros

  • Start table printed from 7 °C, with a treat line up to 29,950 litres
  • UV off for at least 24 hours is on the listing
  • 946 ml at about £19.73, with follow-up doses on days 8, 15, 22 and 29
  • A golden orfe pond is among the two UK reviews

Cons

  • 3.4 from 69 reviews, with only two UK texts in the file
  • Rotten-egg smell, a spoiled bottle, and one exploded bottle
  • Still green after 48 hours in one review
  • Filter versus pond is not stated on the listing

Best for: A keeper who will follow the printed day schedule and the UV pause, and who can accept a thin UK review file.

Less suitable: Anyone who wants a high star line, or a bottle without smell and spoilage notes in the saved texts.

Common questions

What start dose is printed for a small pond?

Up to 1,000 litres: 240 ml to start, then 60 ml on days 8, 15, 22 and 29, then 60 ml monthly. Larger start doses are printed up to 5,700 litres.

What does the listing say about UV?

Switch the UV clarifier off for at least 24 hours after each dose. After pesticides or algicides, wait 72 hours.

What do the reviews in the file repeat?

Two are from the UK: a golden orfe pond, and a smelly dose in a discus aquarium. Other countries repeat no change, a rotten-egg smell, a spoiled bottle, and one exploded bottle. The star line is 3.4 from 69.

How we compared

Nine amazon.co.uk listings were scored from the stored pages. Shelf date 19 October 2026. There is no laboratory test. The score starts from the star rating divided by 5, then multiplied by 100. Adjustments cover a thin review file, review text shared across more than one size, a missing or printed dose and treat volume, a temperature or UV line, a form field that conflicts with the bullets, and a repeated defect such as a spoiled bottle. If two rows still tie, the dearer price per stated 1,000 litres loses one point. The highest score is the top pick. The best value is the lowest shelf price among rows with at least 1,000 reviews. The weights below sum to 100.

Fewer than 20 reviews loses more than a file of 20 to 99. The same review texts on more than one Pure Pond size are one pool, so each of those rows loses a small amount. A count of 3,692 is not three separate proofs.

3

Dose and treat volume

25%

A printed dose and a stated treat volume add a small amount. A listing with neither loses a small amount. You cannot match a bottle to measured litres if the amazon file prints no figure.

4

Label extras and defects

15%

A temperature or a UV interval printed on the listing adds a small amount. A form field that conflicts with the bullets, or a repeated defect such as a spoiled or exploded bottle, is a deduction. The tie between the two highest raw sums is broken on price per stated 1,000 litres.

Pond bacteria buying guide

Buy the job before you buy the star line. A new filter, monthly care of acceptable water, and suspended green water are not one list. Prices below are amazon.co.uk shelf prices on 19 October 2026. This is not a laboratory test.

What to match before you buy

Pond bacteria are cultures you add so a garden pond filter can turn fish waste into less harmful nitrate, or so a blend can work on the organic matter behind murky water. On amazon.co.uk the nine kept listings are not one product. A gel or a named nitrifier is for a new or cleaned filter. Slow-release balls are for monthly maintenance of water that is already acceptable. A green-water liquid belongs only when the label is actually about green water.

Best for

  • A goldfish or koi keeper starting a new or cleaned filter
  • Monthly care of water that already tests acceptable
  • Suspended green water, if you accept that reviews of that liquid split

Not ideal for

  • A wildlife pond with few or no fish, where shade and plants may be enough
  • Anyone buying Pure Pond balls to clear existing pea soup
  • A lake, or fish that are gasping, which needs a specialist

Mistakes to avoid

  1. 1

Buying Pure Pond to cure pea soup

The manufacturer says the balls are not intended to clear green water, and the saved UK reviews agree. Pea soup and sludge stay. Use them for monthly care of water you are already keeping.

  2. 2

Judging a dose after two days

Makers talk in weeks. The Royal Horticultural Society allows about six weeks for a biological film. A clear photograph on day two does not mean ammonia has fallen.

  3. 3

Copying one UV interval onto every brand

ARKA Special Blend prints 24 hours. ARKA Nite-Out II prints about 72 hours. Envii’s note for their bacterial products is about two days. NT Labs Mature prints no UV line on the amazon listing.

What to weigh up

Job, form and treat volume

High

Name the job before the brand. A new or cleaned filter, ammonia or nitrite on a test kit, monthly care of water that is already acceptable, and suspended green water are four purchases. Liquid filter support in this set is NT Labs Mature, which names Nitrosomonas, Nitrobacter and Nitrospira, and the two ARKA liquids. Gel on media is the 473 ml ARKA pond gel and the 2.5 litre Evolution Aqua gel. Slow-release balls are the three Pure Pond sizes. The green-water liquid is Envii Pond Klear Xtra.

Temperature, UV and where it goes

High

Put the dose where that label says. Gels go on the media. Mature is a filter bacteria dose. Pure Pond balls belong in the biological chamber, ideally in a bag. Pond Klear Xtra is mixed into a bucket of pond water and spread. ARKA Special Blend does not say filter or pond. Temperature and UV stay on the bottle you bought. ARKA’s listings here start at 7 °C. Nite-Out II also wants KH of 6 °dH or more and pH 7.2–8.4, and the UV, skimmer and ozone off for about 72 hours.

Which option suits you?

Three typical situations, each with a recommendation from this comparison.

A new or cleaned filter

Goldfish and koi keepers need a starter after a new set-up or a clean, and ammonia or nitrite on a test kit is the success measure. NT Labs Pond Mature, 1 litre, is the top pick at about £20.39, titled for 18,200 litres, with 4.6 from 222 reviews. Do not add a full stock on day one because the water looks clear.

Monthly care of acceptable water

If the water is already acceptable, a slow-release ball in the biological chamber is the monthly habit, above 10 °C on the maker’s page. Evolution Aqua Pure Pond, 500 ml, is the best value at about £12.45. The maker says these balls are not for clearing green water.

Suspended green water

Envii Pond Klear Xtra is the only kept listing whose stated job is green and murky water, at about £31.95 and 10 ml per 1,000 litres. It is 4.0 from 1,989 reviews, and the texts split. A wildlife pond with few or no fish may not need a filter at all. The Royal Horticultural Society points that pond to shade, plants and barley straw.

Common questions about pond bacteria

Which pond bacteria is the top pick in 2026?
NT Labs Pond Mature, 1 litre, is the top pick at about £20.39. It has the highest score in this set: 4.6 from 222 amazon.co.uk reviews, Nitrosomonas, Nitrobacter and Nitrospira named on the listing, a dose from length times width times depth, and a title line of 18,200 litres. It is for a new or cleaned filter, or a weekly response to ammonia or nitrite. It is not a clarifier for pea-soup water. This is not a laboratory test.
Which pond bacteria is the best value?
Evolution Aqua Pure Pond, 500 ml, is the best value at about £12.45. It is the lowest shelf price among the rows with at least 1,000 reviews. The listing is monthly maintenance for water you are already keeping. The maker says the balls are not for clearing green water. The 4.5 from 3,692 reviews is one shared pool with the 1 litre and 2 litre tubs, not three separate proofs. This amazon file prints no dose amount.
How do you choose pond bacteria?
Name the job first. A new or cleaned filter, ammonia or nitrite on a test kit, seasonal care of water that is already acceptable, and green water are different products. Then read the stated treat volume against your litres, and put the dose where that label says: gel or Mature on the filter, Pure Pond balls in the biological chamber, Pond Klear Xtra mixed into pond water. Copy the temperature and the UV interval from that bottle only. A star rating is opinion, not proof the water changed.
Do Pure Pond balls clear green water?
No. Evolution Aqua says Pure Pond is not intended to clear green water, and the saved UK reviews agree: pea soup stays green and sludge is not removed. The balls are monthly maintenance of water you are already keeping, above 10 °C on the maker’s support page. The Royal Horticultural Society treats a UV clarifier plus filtration as the direct answer to suspended algae. See the UVC pond clarifier comparison. A UV unit clumps algae so the filter can catch them. It does not lift blanketweed off the liner.
How long does a biological filter take to mature?
The Royal Horticultural Society says a biological filter takes about six weeks to build a bacterial film, and that it can crash if the filter is off for 24 hours or more. Makers talk in weeks, not in a result after two days. Clear water can still hold ammonia. Test ammonia and pH if fish look wrong. A dying bloom can release ammonia, so keep aeration up. Call a specialist if fish are gasping, or if ammonia or nitrite stays high after you stop feeding and aerate.
Are these pond bacteria approved algaecides?
Do not treat any kept product as an HSE-approved algaecide. The Health and Safety Executive lists aquatic algaecides for ornamental ponds as products that need approval before sale to kill algae and blanketweed. None of the nine amazon.co.uk listings showed an authorisation number. A fish-safe line is a seller claim. Only labels that say you cannot overdose support that sentence: the 2.5 litre Evolution Aqua gel on the listing, and NT Labs Mature on the maker’s page, not in the amazon bullets.
What should you measure before you dose?
Measure litres before you dose. Length times width times depth in centimetres, divided by 1,000, is the NT Labs formula. Blagdon multiplies by 0.8 for an irregular shape. The maker sells Pure Pond 500 ml for up to 10,000 litres, 1 litre for up to 20,000 and 2 litres for up to 40,000. Those bands are not on the three amazon files. Envii Pond Klear Xtra, at 10 ml per 1,000 litres and titled up to 100,000 litres, is many doses, not one pour.

Our verdict

NT Labs Pond Mature, 1 litre, is the top pick at about £20.39. It has the highest score: 4.6 from 222 reviews, a named nitrifier, and both a dose formula and an 18,200 litre title. The 2.5 litre Evolution Aqua gel tied the raw sum and then lost the tie because about £41.45 for a stated 25,000 litres is dearer per 1,000 litres than about £20.39 for 18,200 litres. The best value is Evolution Aqua Pure Pond, 500 ml, at about £12.45, the lowest shelf price among the rows with at least 1,000 reviews. The £10.93 ARKA gel is cheaper still, with 13 reviews and no litre figure, so it does not take that place. The 3,692-review count on the three Pure Pond sizes is one shared pool. None of these scores is a laboratory test.
