Floating pond planter comparison 2026

The best floating pond planters, compared.

Top pick: Pond H2O (25 cm and 35 cm) Best value: zhongko (45 cm ring) – Highest value score that is not the top pick: about £12.98 for a bare-root corral that UK reviews say sinks with soil. Updated 22.10.2026.

A floating pond planter is a mesh ring or a fabric island on the surface. You use it where the pond has no shelf, or where goldfish and koi strip soft plants. A 60 g polyester ring is a fish barrier for bare-root floaters. A water lily still belongs in an aquatic basket at the depth the RHS states. The split is in the [floating pond planter buying guide](/hub/garden-ponds/floating-pond-planter/sub/floating-pond-planter-buying-guide). UK shoppers meet two tools under one name. The seller says they trap soil and still float. One UK review of the ring describes frayed cotton wrapped around a koi fin. The listing says both 25 cm diameter and 20 × 12 × 3 cm, and both floating and floor standing. Only the fabric rows here say they trap soil. Pond 26 cm basket has a stated planting area of about 5–6 inches. RHS guidance is about half the surface covered and half clear, quarantine for new plants, aquatic compost or heavy loam rather than bedding compost, and a gravel cap. A rule of thumb on the RHS planting page is about one floater per square metre to start.

The best floating pond planters in detail

Pond H2O (25 cm and 35 cm)

Rank 1

Pond H2O (25 cm and 35 cm)

∼£26

Our view

The Flp101 pack is two fabric islands, 25 cm and 35 cm, at £25.95, rated 4.8 from 13 reviews, with two UK bodies in the saved listing. The seller says the smaller planting area is about 5–6 inches and the larger about 7–8 inches, that drainage is No, and that the baskets trap soil and keep fish off roots. Those two reviewers say the pair does what the listing says, and that the recipient was pleased at the price paid. The larger basket was too big for the plant that household wanted, and square edges can catch instead of drifting freely. Planting instructions are not in the included-components line. The listed weight is 454 g. The same £25.95 as the two matching 26 cm baskets buys this size split, not a larger review sample, and 4.8 from 13 is not a measured buoyancy.

Pros

  • Two sizes, 25 cm and 35 cm, in one pack at £25.95
  • 4.8 from 13 reviews
  • Seller states planting wells of about 5–6 inches and 7–8 inches
  • UK reviews say the pair does what the listing says

Cons

  • Only two UK review bodies in the saved listing
  • The 35 cm basket was too big for one reviewer’s plant
  • Square edges can catch
  • No planting instructions in the included-components line

Best for: You want one smaller island and one larger island and can accept a thin review sample.

Less suitable: You want two identical 26 cm baskets, or you need the review count of the single Flp250.

Common questions

What is the planting area?

The seller says the 25 cm basket has a 5–6 inch planting area and the 35 cm basket a 7–8 inch area. Drainage is listed as no. The headline size is not the well.

Do UK reviewers say they work?

Two UK reviews are in the file. One says they do what they say. The larger basket was too big for that plant, and square edges can catch. 4.8 from 13 is not a kilogram buoyancy.

Are planting instructions included?

The spec block does not list instructions. Included components are the two baskets. Soil is not in the pack.

Pond H2O (26 cm basket)

Rank 2

Pond H2O (26 cm basket)

∼£16

Our view

Pond H2O’s Flp250 is one 26 cm square woven basket at £15.95, listed at 454 g, with a seller depth of 3 inches. The amazon.co.uk line is 4.2 from 79 reviews. The saved listing has four UK bodies and eleven United States bodies, and the United States notes are not UK opinion. UK reviewers say it does the job and looks fine once planted, and one toad used it as a seat, which also let mud into the pond. A UK reviewer moving plants from 9 cm pots fitted about two, with compost near the rim, and said it is not for a large number of plants. United States texts in the same file mention a planting area just over 5 inches inside the 10 inch basket and a black outer cover that failed; that is not a UK failure rate. Soil is not in the box. The seller says you can link it, tether it, or leave it to float.

Pros

  • 4.2 from 79 reviews, the largest sample in this set
  • Seller says it traps soil and can be linked or tethered
  • UK reviews: a small planting from 9 cm pots worked
  • One 26 cm basket at £15.95

Cons

  • Inner well is smaller than the 26 cm headline
  • A UK review says about two plants, with compost near the rim
  • A toad on the basket let mud into the pond
  • United States texts in the file report a cover failing; that is not a UK rate

Best for: You want one small soil island for a couple of marginals, and you can tether it clear of a waterfall.

Less suitable: You need a large planting area, a bare-root corral only, or a basket with a published kilogram buoyancy.

Common questions

Does it come with soil?

The included-components line names only the basket. Soil is not in the box. You still need aquatic compost or heavy loam, and a gravel cap, if you plant it.

How many plants fit?

A UK reviewer moving plants from 9 cm pots fitted about two, with compost near the rim, and said it is not for a large number of plants. The inner well is smaller than the 26 cm headline.

Can it be fixed in one place?

The seller says it can be linked, tethered, or left to float. A free-floating island in a waterfall is a common mistake.

zhongko (45 cm ring)

Rank 3

zhongko (45 cm ring)

∼£13

Our view

The zhongko ring is a 60 g polyester hoop at £12.98, with 45 cm on the colour field and a second dimension row of 10 × 10 mm that does not describe the ring. On amazon.co.uk it is 4.0 from 24 reviews, and the saved listing holds 16 UK texts. Reviewers use it to keep hornwort and other bare-root floaters away from goldfish, carp, and koi, and several say it floats and adds shade. The same UK reviews say it sinks once you add soil, stones, or a heavy plant, and one reviewer says it is only for bare-root plants. Netting coming away from the foam is a repeated complaint. A seller bullet mentions a steel rim and water lilies; the reviews do not support filling it as a lily basket. One review mentions water lettuce in the ring, which is a use report, not a reason to plant that species in the wild.

Pros

  • 4.0 from 24 reviews, with 16 UK texts in the saved listing
  • UK reviews: keeps bare-root floaters off goldfish, carp, and koi
  • Reviewers describe shade and a foam ring with fine mesh
  • £12.98, with a central tab noted by one reviewer

Cons

  • UK reviews say it sinks with soil, weight, or a heavy plant
  • Mesh can separate from the foam
  • Item dimensions also print 10 × 10 mm
  • Seller lily wording is not backed by a soil-holding review

Best for: You want a light corral for bare-root floating plants in a small pond, and you will not load it with compost.

Less suitable: You need a soil island, a water lily in compost, or a ring you will weigh down with stones.

Common questions

Can it protect plants from fish?

UK reviews say it kept hornwort and other floating plants away from goldfish, carp and koi, and that it adds shade. That is a bare-root use, not a soil basket.

Can you put soil in it?

Several UK reviews say it sinks with soil, weight or plants. One reviewer says it is only for bare-root plants. Do not fill it as a lily basket because a bullet mentions lilies.

What is it made of?

The listing says polyester. Reviewers describe a foam ring with fine mesh. A seller bullet also mentions a steel rim. Listed weight is 60 g.

Pond H2O (two 26 cm baskets)

Rank 4

Pond H2O (two 26 cm baskets)

∼£26

Our view

Flp105 is two matching 26 cm square fabric baskets at £25.95, the same shelf price as the 25 cm plus 35 cm pack, and the listing line is 3.9 from 6 reviews. The saved listing has no review bodies, so that star line has no praise or complaint you can quote. The seller says the pair traps soil, floats plants, keeps fish off roots, and allows more plants in a koi pond. The size rows disagree: each basket is a 26 cm square, also 25 × 25 × 12 cm, and also 15.2 × 25.4 × 15.2 cm. Drainage is listed as Yes, while the mixed-size Pond H2O pack lists No, so drainage is not one brand fact. The hero image filename matches the mixed pack. A saltwater question on the listing is unanswered. You are buying two equal wells on seller text and a short star line.

Pros

  • Two matching 26 cm baskets at £25.95
  • Seller says they trap soil and mentions a koi pond
  • Seller planting area about 5–6 inches and about 6 inches deep

Cons

  • 3.9 from 6 reviews, and no review text in the saved listing
  • Three size rows that do not match
  • Drainage is Yes here and No on the mixed-size Pond H2O pack
  • Saltwater is asked and not answered

Best for: You want two equal 26 cm islands and will judge the live listing because this file has no review text.

Less suitable: You want a 35 cm well, a large review sample, or one clear set of dimensions.

Common questions

Is this the same price as the mixed-size pack?

Both this two-pack and the 25 cm plus 35 cm pack are £25.95 on the listings. This pack is two 26 cm baskets. The mixed pack is one of each size.

What do the six reviews say?

The listing line is 3.9 from 6. The saved listing has no review bodies, so praise and complaints are not recorded. Judge the live listing before you rely on the stars.

Does the seller mention koi?

A bullet says the baskets allow more plants in a koi pond and keep fish off roots. Saltwater is asked and not answered. That bullet is seller text, not a review.

Gonggi (mesh ring)

Rank 5

Gonggi (mesh ring)

∼£14

Our view

Gonggi’s black round ring is listed at £13.99 and 96 g, with no size on the technical table, and it scores 3.0 from 9 reviews. Five UK texts are in the saved listing. Reviewers call the foam sturdy and say a large barrier kept fish off plants, and one used it so a clump of elodea sat higher for light. A name that only says elodea does not tell you whether the plant is Nuttall’s waterweed, which you must not keep or grow in England and Wales. The mesh sits taut and level with the ring, so a reviewer cut slits for lily leaves and found it too shallow for a frogspawn plan. One UK review says cotton frayed within months and wrapped a large koi’s fin, described as a severe cut. That is one report, not a rate, and it is enough reason to take a fraying ring out of a koi pond. The seller says there is no assembly and that the ring is non-adjustable.

Pros

  • Seller says the mesh blocks koi or goldfish and needs no assembly
  • UK reviews mention sturdy foam and easy algae cleaning
  • Listed weight 96 g

Cons

  • 3.0 from 9 reviews
  • One UK review: frayed cotton wrapped a koi fin
  • Mesh described as taut and level with the ring, so leaves need slits
  • No stated diameter

Best for: You want a simple round barrier for soft plants and will check the thread often in a pond with large fish.

Less suitable: A koi pond where frayed cotton is a risk you will not inspect, or a lily that needs depth under the ring.

The seller says the mesh blocks koi or goldfish. A UK reviewer used it in a koi pond. Another UK review says cotton from the item wrapped a koi’s fin. That is one report, not a rate.

Is the mesh deep enough for a lily?

A UK reviewer found the fabric taut and level with the ring, and cut slits so lily leaves could pass. A lily still belongs in a basket at the depth the RHS states.

Does it need assembly?

The seller says no assembly and that the ring is non-adjustable. No diameter is stated on the technical table. Listed weight is 96 g.

BOFRHME (mesh barrier)

Rank 6

BOFRHME (mesh barrier)

∼£10

Our view

BOFRHME’s mesh protector is listed at £9.99, measuring 37 × 34 × 7 cm and weighing 83 g, and the title calls it a floating island. The bullets say it keeps pond fish off floating plants and that sun and soaking do not damage the mesh, yet the page also asks whether it floats and gives no buoyancy figure. There is no Customer Reviews line, so the barrier claim is seller text only. Soil is not mentioned, which places it with the light corrals rather than the fabric islands that say they trap soil. The best-sellers rank sits in DIY and tools, not in pond plants, which is a catalogue slot rather than a result. You cannot tell from this file whether plants stay inside once the ring is on the water.

Pros

  • Stated size 37 × 34 × 7 cm at £9.99
  • Seller describes a mesh barrier for pond fish
  • Listed weight 83 g, with no batteries

Cons

  • No Customer Reviews line on amazon.co.uk
  • No soil claim and no buoyancy figure
  • The listing asks whether it floats and does not answer

Best for: You want a cheap mesh corral and will check the live page for reviews before you rely on it around fish.

Less suitable: You need soil in the basket, or a ring that UK reviewers have already used with bare-root plants.

Generic (25 cm bag)

Rank 7

Generic (25 cm bag)

Our view

The generic round bag is listed at £8.34 and 54 g, with a title that claims a 25 cm diameter and soil retention for aquatic plants. The same amazon.co.uk page also prints item dimensions of 20 × 12 × 3 cm and sets mounting type to floor standing, which conflicts with bullets that say it floats and can be tethered. There is no Customer Reviews line and no review body in the saved listing, so this listing does not show that the bag stays up, holds soil, or keeps fish off roots. Drainage is listed as No, and the seller says bags can be connected, without describing the join. At 54 g it is lighter than the reviewed mesh rings here, which is not a buoyancy test. Until reviews appear on this ASIN, the page is a seller claim with two sizes and two mounting stories.

Pros

  • Shelf price £8.34, the lowest in this set
  • Seller says it retains soil and can be tethered
  • Listed weight 54 g

Cons

  • No Customer Reviews line on amazon.co.uk
  • Size is both 25 cm diameter and 20 × 12 × 3 cm
  • Mounting type says floor standing while the bullets say floating

Best for: You are comparing the cheapest fabric-style claim and will wait for reviews on this ASIN before you trust it in the pond.

Less suitable: You need a reviewed fish barrier or a basket whose size and floating claim agree on one page.

Common questions

Does the listing confirm that it floats?

The bullets say it floats and can be tethered. The same listing sets mounting type to floor standing and gives a second size of 20 × 12 × 3 cm. There is no review line.

Will it hold a larger aquatic plant?

The seller says the basket retains soil and protects roots. No capacity in litres and no buyer report is in the saved listing. Wait for reviews on this ASIN.

Can several be joined?

The seller says bags can be connected or tethered. How the join works is not described. Listed weight is 54 g, which is not a buoyancy figure.

How we compared

We compared seven floating pond planter listings from amazon.co.uk and set aside floor baskets, aquarium pots and tabletop flower rings. Prices, stars and review counts are those UK listings. Each score is stars out of 40, review sample out of 25, fit as a floating planter out of 25, and value in this set out of 10. Public UK sources cover invasive plants and how to plant. Nothing here is a lab float test.

1

amazon.co.uk stars

40%

Stars are (amazon rating / 5) × 40, rounded. A listing with no Customer Reviews line scores 0. US review bodies in a saved listing are not treated as UK opinion.

2

Floating pond planter buying guide

Seven amazon.co.uk listings stay in this table: four mesh or unreviewed claims from about £8.34 to £13.99, and three Pond H2O fabric packs from about £15.95 to £25.95. The two two-packs cost the same, about £25.95, and they are not the same basket. One is two 26 cm squares. The other is 25 cm plus 35 cm. A Superfish protector at about £95, with a stated 10 kg buoyancy, is outside this set. The top pick is Pond H2O Flp250. The best value is the zhongko ring for bare-root plants only.

What is a floating pond planter?

A floating pond planter is a mesh ring or a fabric island that sits on the water so you can hold aquatic plants where a pond has no shelf, or keep goldfish and koi off roots and soft foliage. UK shoppers meet two tools under one name. Light mesh corrals in this set sit around £8.34 to £13.99. UK reviews of the zhongko ring (about £12.98, 60 g, 4.0 from 24) say it is for bare-root floaters and that it sinks once soil, stones or a heavy plant go in.

Best for

  • Goldfish and koi keepers who need a corral for bare-root plants
  • Owners of shelf-less ponds who will pot a small island in aquatic compost

Not ideal for

  • A water lily that needs a basket at the depth the RHS states
  • Anyone planning to float a species of special concern

Mistakes to avoid

  1. 1

Putting soil in a mesh ring

UK reviews of the zhongko ring say it sinks with soil, stones or a heavy plant, and one reviewer says it is only for bare-root plants. A seller line about lilies does not turn that ring into a compost basket. If you need soil, use a fabric island that says it traps soil.

  2. 2

    Trusting the outer diameter

Pond H2O’s 26 cm basket has a stated planting area of about 5–6 inches. A UK reviewer fitted about two plants from 9 cm pots, with compost near the rim. The zhongko page prints 45 cm and also 10 × 10 mm. The generic bag prints 25 cm and also 20 × 12 × 3 cm.

  3. 3

    Copying a water-lettuce review

One zhongko review mentions water lettuce. That is a use report, not a reason to plant it in the wild, and it is not a check that the plant is banned from sale. Bedding compost, a free-floating island in a waterfall, and a label that only says Elodea are the same class of mistake.

What to weigh up

Mesh corral or soil island

High

The first split is the job. A mesh ring corrals bare-root floating plants so goldfish and koi stay off soft foliage. It is not a soil basket. UK reviews of the zhongko 45 cm ring, about £12.98 and 60 g, say it keeps hornwort and other bare-root floaters away from goldfish, carp and koi, and that it sinks once you add soil, stones or a heavy plant. BOFRHME states 37 × 34 × 7 cm at about £9.99 and has no review line, so that barrier claim is seller text.

Inner size, fish and the plant

High

Read the inner planting well, not the headline diameter. Pond H2O’s 26 cm basket has a stated planting area of about 5–6 inches. A UK reviewer moving plants from 9 cm pots fitted about two, with compost near the rim. On the mixed pack the seller says the 25 cm well is about 5–6 inches and the 35 cm well about 7–8 inches. One UK review found the larger basket too big for the plant, and square edges can catch. Flp105 prints three size rows that do not match, and has no review text.

Which option suits you?

Three typical situations, each with a recommendation from this comparison.

Shelf-less ponds, one small island

You need a couple of marginals in aquatic compost where the pond has no shelf, and you can tether the basket clear of a waterfall. Pond H2O Flp250 is one 26 cm square at about £15.95, with 4.2 from 79 reviews. Skip it if you only want a bare-root corral.

Goldfish and koi, bare-root plants

Fish strip soft foliage and you will not load the ring with compost. The zhongko ring at about £12.98 is 4.0 from 24 reviews, and UK reviews say it keeps bare-root floaters off goldfish, carp and koi. It sinks with soil.

One smaller island and one larger

You want a 25 cm basket and a 35 cm basket in one pack at about £25.95, and you can accept 4.8 from 13 reviews with only two UK bodies on file. Square edges can catch. It is the wrong pack if you want two identical 26 cm wells.

Common questions about floating pond planters

Which floating pond planter is the top pick in 2026?
Pond H2O Flp250 is the top pick: one 26 cm square fabric basket at about £15.95, with 4.2 from 79 amazon.co.uk reviews, the largest sample here. The seller says it traps soil and can be tethered. A UK reviewer fitted about two plants from 9 cm pots, so the inner well is smaller than 26 cm. The score uses stars, review count and that job. It is not a lab float test.
How much does a floating pond planter cost?
On these amazon.co.uk listings, mesh rings and the unreviewed generic run from about £8.34 to £13.99. Pond H2O’s single 26 cm basket is about £15.95. Both two-packs are about £25.95: two matching 26 cm baskets, or a 25 cm plus a 35 cm. A protector with a stated 10 kg buoyancy is about £95 elsewhere and is not in this set. These are listing snapshots, not a promise of the live price.
What should you check before you buy a floating pond planter?
Check the job first. Mesh rings here are corrals for bare-root floaters, and UK reviews of the zhongko ring say it sinks with soil. Fabric islands are the rows that say they trap soil, and the inner well is smaller than the headline size. Then look at fish and fraying thread, and name the plant before you float it. Species of special concern in England and Wales must not be kept or grown.
Can you put soil in a mesh floating ring?
Several UK reviews of the zhongko ring, about £12.98 and 60 g, say it sinks once you add soil, stones or a heavy plant. One reviewer says it is only for bare-root plants. Netting coming away from the foam is a repeated complaint. A seller bullet about water lilies is not proof that the ring holds compost. If you need soil, use a Pond H2O fabric basket.
Will a floating ring hold a water lily?
A water lily belongs in an aquatic basket at the depth the RHS states, not in a light foam ring. The zhongko seller mentions a steel rim and water lilies; UK reviews do not support filling it as a lily basket. A Gonggi reviewer cut slits because the mesh sat level with the ring. Use aquatic compost or heavy loam, not bedding compost. Other plants are in the aquatic plant comparison.
Which plants must you not float in England and Wales?
In England and Wales you must not import, sell, keep or grow species of special concern, including floating pennywort, Nuttall’s waterweed, curly waterweed, parrot’s feather and water hyacinth. A plant already in the pond is not, on Defra’s published view, the same as intentionally keeping it, but you must not spread it or dump fragments. Do not plant water lettuce in the wild. A label that only says Elodea is not automatically Nuttall’s.
What if the basket does not float?
The Consumer Rights Act 2015, section 11, says goods must match the description. If the title says floating and the basket does not float, it does not match. The generic bag is both a 25 cm floater and a floor-standing 20 × 12 × 3 cm item. BOFRHME’s page asks whether it floats and does not answer. Neither ASIN has a review line. Check the live page before you rely on the bullet.
Is a mesh ring safe in a koi pond?
One UK review of the Gonggi ring says cotton frayed within months and wrapped a large koi’s fin, described as a severe cut. That is one report, not an injury rate. Take a fraying ring out and check the thread often. zhongko reviewers say their ring kept bare-root plants away from goldfish, carp and koi. If a koi is cut and the cause is unclear, ask someone qualified.

Our verdict

Pond H2O Flp250 is the top pick: one 26 cm fabric island at about £15.95, 4.2 from 79 reviews, and a seller claim that it traps soil. A UK reviewer fitted about two plants from 9 cm pots, so the inner well is smaller than the headline. The zhongko ring is the best value for a bare-root corral at about £12.98, and UK reviews say it sinks with soil. Both Pond H2O two-packs are about £25.95 and they are not the same basket. None of these scores is a measured buoyancy.
