Floating planter for a koi pond

Updated: 22 October 2026

You keep koi, or goldfish that graze the same way, and every soft plant you lower in is gone by the weekend. A floating planter for a koi pond can keep roots out of reach on a liner with no shelf. It does not make every leaf koi-proof, and a frayed mesh thread is a reason to lift that ring out. The seven amazon.co.uk listings are on the [floating pond planter comparison](/hub/garden-ponds/floating-pond-planter). Peter F. used UK nursery notes and the UK review texts in this set on 20 October 2026. There was no stocked test pond. A qualifying purchase can earn us a commission at no extra cost to you.

Why koi ponds lose their plants

Carp dig, and they eat. Plants for Ponds, a UK nursery, says unprotected planting is unrealistic once carp are in the water, and it will not recommend plants unless the roots are protected. Goldfish are the smaller version: they nibble oxygenators and softer leaves, and they take larvae. A floating basket changes the reach, not the appetite. United Aquatics UK sells floating baskets for ponds with no shelves, including koi ponds. Which listing fits a corral or a small soil island is on best floating pond planter.

Fabric island or mesh corral

Match the tool to the plant, then to the fish. Pond H2O’s Flp250 is £15.95, and the seller says it traps soil and keeps fish off roots. Flp105, at £25.95, is the listing whose seller text names a koi pond. Neither file contains a koi injury report. A UK reviewer fitted about two plants from 9 cm pots. A shallow well protects a small root ball. It does not hide a tall crown. UK reviewers use the zhongko hoop, £12.98 and about 60 g, to keep hornwort off goldfish, carp and koi. The same texts say it sinks with soil or stones. One owner used stones to separate a small orfe and called the ring not very robust. Gonggi, £13.99, has mesh that sits taut and level. The construction split is on mesh ring or fabric floating basket.

Thread, fins, and false hospital tanks

One UK review of the Gonggi ring says cotton frayed within months and wrapped a large koi’s fin, described as a severe cut. That is one report among nine reviews, not a rate for every mesh hoop. Take a fraying ring out the week you see loose thread. Netting leaving the foam is a repeated note on the zhongko ring, without that injury sentence. Do not use the ring as a hospital tank. The orfe note is a keeper who tried a few stones and then called the ring not very robust. A mesh pen is open at the surface. A sick koi needs a proper tank and someone who treats fish. Stones are also the load that takes this hoop under.

Goldfish, a tether, and the plant name

Goldfish need the same root barrier, until they shove a 60 g hoop or pull hornwort through slack mesh. If you keep koi as well, check the hoop for frayed thread. Tether Flp250 if the current can reach the return. Leave about half the surface clear. Name the plant first. Floating pennywort and water hyacinth are species of special concern in England and Wales. A label that only says elodea does not tell you whether you have Nuttall’s waterweed. Water lettuce must not be planted in the wild under Schedule 9. Bare-root hornwort belongs in the mesh ring. Compost belongs in the fabric island, with a gravel cap.

Common questions

Will koi still eat plants in a floating basket?
They will eat what they can reach. Plants for Ponds will not recommend plants for carp unless the roots are protected, which is the job of a basket or island. Leaves over the rim, and stems pulled through a slack mesh, are still grazed. Goldfish do the same to softer oxygenators. A floating planter is a barrier for the root ball, not a guarantee of an untouched crown by late summer.
Is a mesh ring safe in a koi pond?
It can corral bare-root plants, and it can also shed thread. One UK review of Gonggi’s £13.99 ring says cotton frayed within months and wrapped a large koi’s fin, described as a severe cut. That is one report among nine reviews, not a figure for every mesh product. The zhongko reviews describe fish kept off plants, and netting leaving the foam, without that injury line. Lift a ring out as soon as fibres fray.
What did the Gonggi review actually report?
The listing is B0FCS7C3GY, £13.99 and 96 g, with no diameter printed, and 3.0 from 9 reviews. Five UK texts mention sturdy foam and a barrier that kept fish off plants. One says cotton frayed within months and wrapped a large koi’s fin, and calls the cut severe. Other notes say the mesh is taut, so lily leaves needed slits, and that the ring was too shallow for frogspawn. One review is not an injury rate.
Can I isolate a small fish in the ring?
That use showed up in a zhongko review: a few stones, a small orfe, and a comment that the ring was not very robust. The ring is a plant corral with an open top. It is not a hospital tank, and stones are the load UK reviews say makes this hoop sink. A fish that needs separating belongs in a proper tank. Gravel in the mesh also ruins the bare-root job.
Which listing mentions koi in the seller text?
Pond H2O’s matched pair, Flp105, ASIN B0BMM8QCY5, is the seller text that names a koi pond and root protection. It is £25.95 for two 26 cm squares, 3.9 from 6 reviews, and the file has no review bodies. Flp250 says it keeps fish off roots and does not carry an injury report either. The zhongko and Gonggi mentions of koi are buyer text. The Gonggi review is the one that describes a cut.
