Floating pond planter buying guide

Updated: 22 October 2026

You are looking at a UK pond with no marginal shelf, or at goldfish that strip soft plants, and a search for a floating pond planter returns three different objects under one name. This guide separates a light mesh corral, a fabric island whose seller says it holds soil, and a heavy protector that is not in our amazon.co.uk set. Prices and review counts for the seven listings sit on the [floating pond planter comparison](/hub/garden-ponds/floating-pond-planter). Peter F. read those pages and the public UK sources below on 20 October 2026. There was no test float. A qualifying purchase can earn us a commission at no extra cost to you.

Mesh ring, fabric island, or a rated protector

A mesh ring here weighs about 60 to 96 g. UK reviewers of the zhongko ring say it corrals bare-root plants and sinks once soil or a heavy plant goes in. BOFRHME at £9.99 has no review line and no stated soil volume. A fabric island is the other job. Pond H2O says Flp250 traps soil. If the listing does not say it traps soil, do not fill it. Superfish’s 70 cm protector is about £95 at fishkeeper.co.uk, with a stated 10 kg buoyancy. That figure stays on that product. It is not one of the seven ASINs. Which light construction fits is on mesh ring or fabric floating basket.

Read the inner size, not the headline

That Pond Guy sells a 25 cm basket for a 1 litre pot and a 35 cm basket for a 3 litre pot, and says to drop the pot in rather than plant through the net. Use that as a size rule of thumb from another shop. Flp250’s seller depth is 3 inches. A UK reviewer fitted about two plants from 9 cm pots, with compost near the rim. The mixed pack states wells of about 5 to 6 inches and 7 to 8 inches. The zhongko field says 45 cm and also 10 × 10 mm. Who each listing is for is on best floating pond planter.

Name the plant before it goes in the ring

In England and Wales, GOV.UK guidance under the Invasive Alien Species (Enforcement and Permitting) Order 2019 says you must not import, keep, sell or grow species of special concern. That includes floating pennywort (Hydrocotyle ranunculoides), water hyacinth (Eichhornia crassipes), Nuttall’s waterweed, curly waterweed and parrot’s feather. Defra’s published view is that a plant already on your land is not the same as intentionally keeping it, though you must not spread it or dump fragments. Scotland and Northern Ireland keep their own lists. Water lettuce (Pistia stratiotes) is on Schedule 9 of the Wildlife and Countryside Act 1981: you must not plant it in the wild. It is not in the special-concern tables used here, so do not call it banned from sale without a fresh check. A label that only says Elodea is not automatically Nuttall’s waterweed.

When you do not need this product

If the pond already has a shelf at the depth the plant wants, a normal aquatic basket on that shelf is the simpler buy. A floating island earns its keep where there is no ledge, or where fish graze anything that is not penned. You do not need a floater to tidy away a species of special concern. A listed invasive, a koi with a cut you cannot explain, or a liner that needs rebuilding is the point to call someone qualified. Under the Consumer Rights Act 2015, section 11, goods must match their description. The £8.34 generic says floating in the bullets and floor standing in the mounting field. Leave that ASIN until the fields agree and a review exists.

Common questions

What size floating basket do I need?
That Pond Guy sells a 25 cm float for a 1 litre plant and a 35 cm float for a 3 litre pot. In this set, Flp250 has a seller depth of 3 inches, and a UK reviewer fitted about two plants from 9 cm pots. The mixed pack states wells of about 5 to 6 inches and 7 to 8 inches. Choose the inner well, not the outer headline.
Should I plant into the net or drop in a pot?
Drop the whole potted plant in, which is That Pond Guy’s method, and keep tall plants off the float. Compost in a fine mesh is what UK reviewers of the zhongko ring say makes it sink. Fill a fabric island only when the seller says it traps soil, using aquatic compost and a gravel cap. If the page never mentions soil, treat it as a bare-root corral.
Which floating plants must I not buy?
In England and Wales you must not import, keep, sell or grow species of special concern, including floating pennywort, water hyacinth, Nuttall’s waterweed, curly waterweed and parrot’s feather. A plant already in the pond is not, on Defra’s view, the same as choosing to keep it, but you must not spread it. Scotland and Northern Ireland use their own lists. Check the Latin name.
Is water lettuce the same legal problem as floating pennywort?
Floating pennywort is a species of special concern in the England and Wales guidance used here, so you must not keep or grow it. Water lettuce sits on Schedule 9, which means you must not plant it in the wild. It is not in the special-concern tables this comparison used, so do not call it banned from sale without checking the current sale list. A review that used it is not a shopping list.
What does a stated buoyancy of 10 kg refer to?
It refers to the Superfish floating plant protector at fishkeeper.co.uk, about £95, 70 cm, with a stated 10 kg buoyancy. That product is not in this amazon.co.uk set. A 60 g ring and a 454 g Pond H2O basket do not inherit the figure. If a listing prints no load, do not invent one, and do not treat a star rating as a kilogram.
