Pond clear buying guide

Updated: 22 October 2026

A warm fortnight can turn a small British garden pond from water you can see through into pea soup, or into a milky cloud after you have scooped leaves and stirred the silt. You open amazon.co.uk for a pond clear buying guide and find bacterial liquids, clumping treatments, blanket-weed products, and dechlorinators under the same words. Decide in this order: name the cloud, then the mechanism, then whether the listing prints a dose you can multiply by your litres. Prices and the job each card claims are on the [pond clear comparison](/hub/garden-ponds/pond-clear). Peter F. used the saved listings from 19 October 2026. This is not a laboratory test.

Name the cloud before you name a bottle

Green water and brown water are both called cloudy, and they are different jobs. Pea-soup green is suspended algae after a bright, warm spell. Brown cloud is fine waste and silt, often the morning after a net or a vacuum, and much of it settles if you leave the bottom alone. Blanket weed is strands you can lift on a stick. Chlorine from a hose top-up belongs with a dechlorinator. A 2,000-litre pond that went green in July can justify a measured clarifier once you have called the cloud suspended algae. The same pond, brown the day after you stirred sludge, needs the filter ahead of another bottle. Strands you can pull out are blanket weed, so a general clarifier is the wrong shelf.

What this set actually sells

These amazon.co.uk listings share a search term and little else. Envii Pond Klear at about £12.95 is the bacterial card: it states 20,000 litres and prints no millilitre rate, so a partial dose cannot be checked on the page. Pond Klear Xtra at about £31.95 prints 10 ml per 1,000 litres, which you can scale once the pond is measured. Envii's weekly bacterial claim runs on a slow clock beside a clump-and-catch dose. Blagdon Green Away, 250 ml at about £7.95, states 5,000 litres and sits with the clumping bottles, as does Tetra CrystalWater at about £11.30. Tetra's page prints no dose. AquaDesign at about £19.99 states no mechanism. NBOFOL at about £7.99 has one review, no printed dose, and the listing clashes between tablet and powder. A flocculant needs the filter running. A bacterial card is too soon to judge on Saturday.

Pack size and the treat-volume trick

The biggest litre figure on a listing is easy to misread, and it is a weak reason to buy. Blagdon's 250 ml states 5,000 litres, a pack claim you can set beside a measured pond, though a smaller pond still has no millilitre rate on that page. Envii Pond Klear states 20,000 litres with no millilitre rate, so the headline and the liquid stay untied. Xtra states 10 ml per 1,000 litres. A 2,000-litre pond at that rate takes 20 ml a time. Envii's 100,000-litre line is that sum of doses at the printed rate. Emptying a large bottle into a patio pond in one afternoon follows the headline and skips the rate. Measuring, and leaving a second bottle for another day, is the work of the how to dose pond clear page.

Fish, wildlife, and what not to trust

Stars count satisfied shoppers. Tetra CrystalWater's listing carries reviews that report fish losses, so read them before you trust the average and treat a reported loss as a live risk for the fish you keep. None of the six listings prints an HSE number. A claim to kill algae is a biocide question under HSE COPR rules, and these pages show no authorisation you can check. A wildlife pond with frogs or newts usually goes green from light and nutrients, so shade, plants, and undisturbed silt come ahead of a clarifier. The Royal Horticultural Society puts volume, fish load, and a UV clarifier on the seasonal side of clarity. How Envii's weekly claim differs from a clumping bottle is on the pond bacteria or flocculant page. When a dose buys only a few clear days, read clear green pond water before you buy again.

Common questions

Is green water the same as cloudy brown water?
Green water is suspended algae, the pea-soup colour after warm, bright days. Brown cloud is fine waste and silt, and much of it settles once you stop stirring. Blanket weed is strands you can lift, and a hose top-up is chlorine, so a pond flocculant answers neither. Name the cloud before you compare about £7.95 with about £31.95.
Do I buy a bottle or look at the UV first?
Buy a bottle for a cloud you have named, from a listing that states a mechanism and a dose. If the pond is heavily stocked and the green returns every sunny spell, the Royal Horticultural Society points to volume, fish load, and UV as the seasonal clarity tools. A UV clarifier is a separate purchase from these six listings.
Which of these listings actually prints a dose?
Pond Klear Xtra prints 10 ml per 1,000 litres, so you can scale it to a measured pond. Blagdon's 250 ml states 5,000 litres as a pack figure, with no millilitre rate for a smaller pond. Envii Pond Klear states 20,000 litres and prints no ml rate. Tetra CrystalWater, AquaDesign, and NBOFOL print no dose.
Is the highest star rating the safest for fish?
Tetra CrystalWater's listing includes reviews that report fish losses, so a strong average still leaves a risk for the fish you keep. Stars record shopper satisfaction, and they leave stocking, oxygen, and pH unchecked. None of these six pages prints an HSE authorisation number. Where the reviews describe losses, leave that bottle on the shelf.
What should a wildlife pond buy, if anything?
A wildlife pond without fish goes green from light and nutrients, and a clarifier leaves that cause in place. Shade, plants, and undisturbed silt do more than an about £7.99 pouch, though they take longer than an afternoon. If you do buy, the listing has to be explicit about frogs, newts, or whatever else lives in the water. A fish-pond star rating does not cover them.
