10,000 L/h pond pump buying guide

Updated: 22 October 2026

This 10,000 L/h pond pump buying guide starts before any brand. Every pump says about 10,000 L/h. That figure is the flow at little or no head, not the flow at a raised filter, and not proof the filter can take it. Use the volume, the filter’s maximum, and a head you have measured. The five amazon.co.uk listings saved on 19 October 2026 stay on the [10,000 L/h pond pump comparison](/hub/garden-ponds/10000l-h-pond-pump). Products Compared did not run the pumps. Start with the pond volume and the filter’s maximum

Work in litres before the box number feels like an answer. All Pond Solutions uses length × width × depth × 1,000. Their example is 3 m × 2 m × 1.5 m, which is 9,000 litres. The same article warns that a pump stronger than the filter rushes the media. If the filter’s maximum is 6,000 L/h, a pump sold at 10,000 L/h is already too much at the easy end of the curve. HOCANFLO is stated at 11,000 L/h and the XOE-12000 at 12,000 L/h. Measure the water, read the filter plate, then use the pond pump head height page.

Turnover rates UK shops actually publish

All Pond Solutions does not agree with itself. The support article turns the pond over about once an hour. A later line says heavily stocked koi at least once an hour, and lighter ponds once every two hours. The calculator is a third method: koi at twice the volume per hour, goldfish at 1.5, wildlife at once, plus 25 percent for sun more than half the day, and 100 L/h per 10 cm of feature height. None of that is a British Standard. For 9,000 litres, once an hour is 9,000 L/h and the koi rule is 18,000 L/h before sun and height. Use the multiple that matches your stocking, and stop at the filter.

The box flow is the easy end of the curve

That Pond Guy puts maximum flow and maximum head at opposite ends of a curve. Measure an open waterfall from the water surface to the outlet, not from the pump on the bottom. Their case needs 6,000 L/h at the filter, with 1 m of lift and 1 m they added for pipe, so the pump must still deliver 6,000 L/h at 2 m. That extra metre is their example. Water Gardening Direct’s note is about a 25 percent drop for each hose size you step down. That is their guide, not a loss on these listings. BARST states 19 mm, 23 mm and 35 mm tails. Only the FM-10000 prints a mid-point, and it prints both 7,600 L/h and 6,000 L/h at 2 m as separate claims.

Watts and the plug are the next gate

A flow that fits the filter can still be the wrong pump if you cannot read the watts or the plug. Stated powers are 300 W on the HOCANFLO, 210 W on the BARST, 90 W on the Varipump, and 85 W in the XOE-12000 bullet only. The FM-10000 table says 0.11 horsepower and states no watts. Do not turn horsepower into a bill. UK mains are 230 V and a normal plug is BS 1363. BARST’s bullet says a UK 3-pin plug while its table says 220 V. What those watts cost is on the pond pump running cost page. Which listing fits a person is on the best 10,000 L/h pond pump page.

Common questions

Is a pump labelled 10,000 L/h the right size for a 10,000 litre pond?
Only if you want about one turnover an hour and the water does not have to climb. The once-an-hour example needs that flow at the filter, not on the box at zero head. All Pond Solutions’ calculator asks for twice the volume on koi, before sun and height. The filter maximum can sit below either figure. Match the flow you still have, inside the filter.
How do I work out pond volume in litres?
Multiply length, width and average depth in metres, then multiply by 1,000. All Pond Solutions’ example is 3 m by 2 m by 1.5 m, which is 9,000 litres. Use an average depth where the pond shelves, because a planted margin holds less than the surface rectangle. The volume is the starting target. It is not the pump until the filter and the head have had a say.
Should a koi pond turn over once an hour or twice?
Both numbers are in print, on different All Pond Solutions pages. The support article’s worked example is about once an hour, and a later line allows lighter ponds once every two hours. The calculator says koi at twice the volume per hour. None of this is a British Standard. Pick the method that matches your stocking, and do not exceed the filter to chase the larger multiple.
What happens if the pump is stronger than the filter?
The media is rushed. All Pond Solutions warn that too much flow pushes water through faster than the media can work. A turnover table that asks for more does not cancel that. If the filter is rated below the flow you will deliver, you need a different filter or a pump you can turn down. The Varipump is the only saved listing with a stated external control.
Does the box flow include the height of a waterfall?
No. The 10,000 L/h figure is maximum flow at little or no head. That Pond Guy treats maximum head as the other end of the curve, where flow is effectively gone. Their example adds 1 m for pipe and equipment to 1 m of lift, and asks for the required flow at 2 m. That extra metre is their example, not a fixed allowance.
