Solar pond pump buying guide

Updated: 22 October 2026

You have a bowl or a pond and no outdoor socket, so a solar pond pump buying guide has to start with the job in the garden. Decide the lift, then whether the panel can sit in direct sun, then battery or direct. Named shelf prices stay on the best page. If fish depend on the flow, do not treat a fountain as a filter. The nine amazon.co.uk listings are the [solar pond pump comparison](/hub/garden-ponds/solar-pond-pump). Figures are that category snapshot of 20 October 2026, not a live recheck and not a lab test by the Products Compared editorial team. Start with the job, not the litre-per-hour

A bird bath needs a short jet that falls back into the bowl, and you top it up after splash. A fountain wants a jet you can see. A waterfall wants a high stated flow, then loses most of that flow once the water climbs to the spillway. Swell UK’s solar guide puts ordinary fountain kits in a retailer band of about 150–1,600 litres per hour and says solar is not for waterfalls. This shelf still has a 100 W kit with 4,500 L/h in the bullets. UK reviews still tie that sheet of water to direct sun. The litre-per-hour figure is open discharge, near zero lift. One UK review of a 300 L/h pump found usable flow at a few centimetres and a trickle at 100 cm. That is one pump, not a percentage for every listing. Model prices are on the best solar pond pump page.

Head first, then the open-discharge flow

Maximum flow and maximum head do not happen at the same time. The Pond People make the point that the number on the box is zero-head flow. PowerBee’s percentage bands were not measured on these kits. Stated flows cluster by panel size. That is a shopping clue, not a cure for shade. The 6.5 W and 8 W kits are about 300 L/h, or 290 L/h on one listing. Both 12 W listings are about 600 L/h. The 15 W states 720 L/h and the 20 W table states 1,211 L/h. The 20 W pump prints 2 m in the table and 7.5 ft (2.3 m) in a bullet. One UK review reported about 1 m of spray in bright British sun. The Biling 8 W listing, with 349 reviews, does not print a maximum head. A missing head is a gap, not a number you may invent.

Sun on the panel, then battery or direct

Shade on the pond is fine only when the panel is in direct sun, facing south, inside the lead. Swell UK says British cloud cuts the jet. If the sunny patch is further than the cable, choose a longer lead. Do not cut the cable. Direct on this shelf is the 6.5 W, both 12 W pumps, the 15 W and the 20 W. A stated 3600 mAh battery appears on two POPOSOAP 8 W kits and on the Biling 8 W. None states a runtime in hours. The Biling bullet says the kit does not work at night. All three print the same milliamp figure. That split is battery or direct. Dry-run protection, where a fountain listing states it, shuts the pump when the basin is empty. It does not refill the basin. The 100 W kit does not state it.

What this shelf cannot decide for you

Swell’s line that solar is not for waterfalls describes that retailer’s range. It does not erase the 100 W kit. No listing here prints an IP rating or an hour runtime. If the fish depend on a biological filter, solar is a daytime extra. Read solar pond pump for fish before you switch a mains filter off. A wildlife pond with no fish, no socket and a basin you can top up is the job this shelf can do. A new outdoor socket, a damaged mains cable or a tripping RCD is an electrician’s job. Approved Document P covers a garden pump fed from the dwelling. These pumps must not be connected to AC mains. A Pondkeeper solar manual says DC only, fresh water, and do not run dry for long.

Common questions

Do I size a solar pond pump by the litre-per-hour on the box?
No. That figure is open discharge, close to zero lift. Flow falls as soon as the water has to climb. Measure the height you need, then treat the box flow as the top of a curve you have not been given. One UK review of a 300 L/h pump saw a usable jet at a few centimetres and a trickle at 100 cm. That report is a warning, not a formula.
What changes between a bird bath, a small fountain and a waterfall?
A bird bath wants a short jet back into the bowl. A fountain wants visible height, and the stated flow will not all survive it. A waterfall wants a high stated flow and still loses most of it on the way up. Swell UK’s band of about 150–1,600 L/h is a retailer range. The 100 W kit is a spillway, and reviews still tie it to direct sun.
Does a higher watt panel mean the pump runs in shade?
No. Watts on these listings are the size of the panel. A 12 W, 15 W or 20 W direct pump still needs sun on the glass. UK reviews say the jet stops when cloud or a fence shades the panel. Face the panel south, in direct sun, inside the lead. A bigger panel in the shade is still a shaded panel.
Can I use the same kit as my only fish filter?
Not if the fish depend on a biological filter. Those filters need flow after dark, and these listings do not guarantee that. A sponge is a pad you rinse. The 100 W kit includes ceramic rings, and the bullet still says circulation during the day. Keep a mains filter running and use solar as a fountain beside it.
What should I measure in the garden before I look at stars?
Measure the lift, the hose run, and the distance from the water to direct sun. Note whether that patch stays clear, and whether you can top the basin up. Then decide battery or direct. A 4.1 from 349 reviews still leaves the Biling table without a maximum head.
