Garden pond cost UK: what to buy before you add fish

A small lined garden pond with marginal plants in pots, before any fish are added

A garden pond cost in the UK is a liner, a pump and plants bought separately. On amazon.co.uk this plant set is about £6.99 to £26.99, not a whole pond.

You have a tape measure and a forum figure for liner, pump, and plants. A garden pond cost in the UK is not one shelf price. Those buys are different products, and a filter is a fourth if you are heading towards fish. On amazon.co.uk this aquatic plant set, recorded on 19 October 2026, runs from about £6.99 to £26.99. That band is plants only.

The Royal Horticultural Society publishes a container-pond parts list and does not publish a pound total. Peter F., editor for DIY & tools at productscompared.co.uk, checked those listings and that parts list. Nothing here is a lab test, and a qualifying purchase through our links can earn a commission at no extra cost to you. Do not add a total until each line has a real listing. A line without a listing is not a price.

In short

There is no official UK price for a garden pond in the sources used here. Price the liner, the pump, and the plants separately, and do not invent a sum. The aquatic plant shelf on 19 October 2026, about £6.99 to £26.99, mixes tank plastic with outdoor marginals. A shorter container list is not a national bargain price.

The parts that make a garden pond cost

A flexible liner, a preformed shell, and a trough are different products. The RHS wildlife container is a container, a liner only if it leaks, bricks, up to five plants, and rainwater. Bricks make a shelf, and that page names rainwater with no tap-water recipe. Marginals want shallow water, floaters sit on the surface, and oxygenators sit under it. A plastic stem does none of those jobs. Miniature waterlilies start at about 10 cm of water, and some lilies go to about 1.2 m, so an unmeasured depth cannot pick a plant.

A pump is optional at container scale. The RHS list does not include one. Once you want a waterfall, a filter circuit, or circulation, open the pond pump comparison and price a model against the litres you measured. A filter belongs with fish and heavy debris, on the pond filter page, and it is not part of the liner price. Carbeth arrives in 9 cm pots. A larger aquatic basket, and fleece under a liner, are not inside the £26.99.

Marginal pond plants price in this set

The only shelf this page quotes is that aquatic plant set on amazon.co.uk, 19 October 2026: about £6.99 to £9.99 for plastic and water lettuce, about £14 to £17 for unnamed live bunches, and £26.99 for four outdoor marginal pots. Those figures move. They are not every nursery in Britain, and they are not a liner price with the plants thrown in.

Carbeth Plants is four live marginals in 9 cm pots for full sun, pond edges, bog gardens, and small ponds, at £26.99. The mix may include Acorus, Juncus, Iris, Eriophorum, and Caltha, chosen on the day, not a promise of all five. Across 374 reviews at 4.1, several buyers report a healthy arrival and later growth in a larger basket. Others describe poor roots, transport damage, and one death after repotting. Some reviews read as a single plant. The 9 cm figure is the pot, not the grown height.

Water lettuce, Pistia stratiotes, is £6.99 with 3.0 from two reviews. The title says five plants and the unit-count field says 3.0. One review says they died within a week. Schedule 9 of the Wildlife and Countryside Act 1981 means you must not cause it to grow in the wild. It is not in the England sale order SI 2014/538, so this page does not call it banned from sale in England. The RHS notes a Northern Ireland sale ban from August 2024. A 2017 GB Non-native Species Secretariat assessment says it is unlikely to overwinter in Britain.

The DIGIFLEX stem, about 20 cm, is £9.99 with 4.3 from 3,009 reviews. It is a tank plant whose base walks, and it does not oxygenate a pond. Unnamed live bunches at £14.00, £15.50, and £17.00 are indoor, USDA zone 10. That is not a British winter, and Be Plant Wise says aquarium plants stay out of the pond. Snapshots the same day, outside this set, showed Elodea densa around £4.15, hornwort at £14.25, and marginals around £19.99 to £45.99. Egeria densa is not on the OATA July 2024 sale-ban table, and OATA says sell it for aquariums, not ponds. The rows are on the aquatic plant comparison.

A container pond is a shorter list

The RHS wildlife container is a watertight container, a liner only if needed, bricks, up to five plants, and rainwater, with no pound total. Five plants is not five times £26.99, because that listing is already four pots. Keep about half the surface clear. One floating plant per square metre is the RHS starting point, and five plants is a ceiling, not a target.

A 9 cm pot on the bottom of a deep trough is the wrong depth. Measure the water above the crown after the bricks are in. The Natural History Museum asks for at least one submerged native, such as hornwort or starwort, and those hardy oxygenators are not in this set. You skip the digger, and you may still pay for the trough. A new half-barrel, a liner, and four marginals can pass a small preformed shell. Until both numbers are written down, cheaper is a hope.

Pond liner cost and the pump stay separate

The pond liner comparison is where a sheet or a preformed shape gets a price. This article does not copy that shelf into a pond total. A wildlife hole a couple of metres across and a fish pond several metres each way do not share a sheet. Underlay and edging are further lines, and the edging may already be in the garden. Open the liner page when you know length, width, and depth, including the flap under the stones.

A mains pump needs flow in litres per hour, the head if you lift water, and a UK 13 amp plug to BS 1363. A solar panel can move water in sun and stop under cloud. It does not replace a filter pump on a stocked pond until you have a model. A remembered £50 or £150 is not a listing. Rinse filter foams in pond water, not under the tap. Green water is algae in the water. String algae is a different mess. If a size is missing, it is not published.

What not to add in year one

Fish change every other line. A wildlife pond can stay on plants, rainwater, and a liner or a sound container. Goldfish or koi add food and usually a filter. The RHS notes about four to five oxygenator bunches, of three to four stems, per square metre. Too many can leave fish short of oxygen after dark, and those hardy bunches are not priced in this set. Leave the pump, plastic, zone-10 stems, food, a feeder, a heater, and a de-icer off the first parcel.

Do not buy curly waterweed, floating pennywort, parrot's feather, Nuttall's waterweed, water fern, or Australian swamp stonecrop. That list follows the GOV.UK special-concern guidance and Schedule 9. The RHS warns that Crassula helmsii hitchhikes in other pots. Rinse compost into a bucket and pour it on the garden away from drains. If you need only a marsh marigold, a may-include mix is the wrong row even at £26.99.

If the plants arrive dead or short

Section 11 of the Consumer Rights Act 2015 says goods must match the description. Four live marginals that arrive as mush are a description problem. Photograph them on the day and tell the seller before the compost dries. A missing name on a may-include list is not a mismatch. A 9 cm pot that is 9 cm is as described. A zone-10 bunch left out in a frost is not the seller's winter. The 4.1 from 374 reviews already includes poor roots and one death after repotting.

This comparison did not lab-test survival, nitrate, or blanketweed. You can inspect 374 reviews on the outdoor mix, 3,009 on the plastic stem, and two on the water lettuce. If Carbeth is no longer £26.99, record the new shelf, keep the liner and the pump on their own pages, and still do not publish one garden pond cost for the country.

Common questions

What do I have to buy besides a liner?
A liner is one line. You still need a container or a dug shape, plants matched to the depth you measured, and a shelf if the marginals would sit too deep. Buy a pump only for moving water, and a filter only once fish or heavy debris are planned. The RHS list is a container, a liner only if needed, bricks, up to five plants, and rainwater. Add a pound figure only after you open the listing.
Are plants the expensive part of a garden pond?
In this aquatic plant set on amazon.co.uk, recorded on 19 October 2026, kept listings run from about £6.99 to £26.99. That mixes plastic tank plants, unnamed indoor bunches, water lettuce at £6.99, and four outdoor marginal pots at £26.99. A £9.99 plastic stem is not a marginal. Plants can be a small line or a middle line. They are not a whole pond, and this page does not add them to a liner price.
Is a container pond cheaper?
It can be a shorter list, which is not a discount on a dug pond. The RHS wildlife container is a container, a liner only if needed, bricks, up to five plants, and rainwater, with no pound total. Call it cheaper only if you already own the container. A new trough, a liner, and four marginals can pass a small preformed shell, and that shell is priced on the liner page.
When do I add a pond pump?
Add a pump when you want circulation, a waterfall, or a filter circuit. The RHS container list does not include one, so a wildlife tub can be priced without it. A pump for a larger lined pond is its own comparison, against the volume you measured. A solar panel does not replace a filter pump on a stocked pond. Leave the cell blank until you have a model. A remembered round number is not a garden pond cost.
Should I budget for fish in year one?
Not inside the first sum. Fish bring food and usually a filter sized for the stock. A small wildlife pond can stay without them. The Natural History Museum asks for at least one submerged native, such as hornwort or starwort, which is a plant, not a fish budget. Named hardy oxygenator bunches are not in the plant set quoted here. Price fish when you add them. This page does not quote a fish price.
What if the pond plants arrive dead?
Section 11 of the Consumer Rights Act 2015 says goods must match the description. Four live marginals that arrive as mush are a description problem. Photograph the box on the day and tell the seller before the compost dries. A missing name on a may-include list is still as described, because the species were never fixed. A 9 cm pot that measures 9 cm is as described. A zone-10 bunch you then killed outdoors is not the seller's winter.
Is there one official garden pond cost in the UK?
No official UK price for a garden pond was in the sources used here. Liner, pump, filter, and plants are separate decisions. The only shelf band on this page is the aquatic plants, about £6.99 to £26.99 on amazon.co.uk on 19 October 2026. Liner and pump prices live on their own pages and move. Peter F. did not lab-test a finished pond. A qualifying purchase through our links can earn a commission at no extra cost to you.
