How to feed pond fish

Updated: 22 October 2026

The goldfish or koi are already at the surface, the tub of sticks is open, and the useful question is how much of it belongs in the water today. How to feed pond fish means offering less than you think, watching what they finish, and lifting off whatever they leave. OATA says give only what the fish eat within a few minutes, usually once a day, because uneaten food becomes waste. Pack choice is on the [Pond food](/hub/garden-ponds/pond-food) comparison. Peter F. drew on OATA, World of Water and Bradshaws, and the listings from 19 October 2026. This is not a lab test. A qualifying purchase can earn us a commission at no extra cost to you.

How much food goes in

Start with a small pinch of floating food and stop while the fish are still interested. OATA's coldwater sheet limits you to what they finish in a few minutes. World of Water and Bradshaws both use about five minutes, then you scoop what remains. Floating sticks make the check possible. Tetra Pond Sticks and Walters variety sticks sit on the water, and a fine net can take them off if interest fades. Sinking food is easier to overfeed, because leftovers drop out of sight. A Walters 40 litre bag can stay open for months. If the sticks smell stale or feel soft, bin them.

How often to feed

For a lightly stocked garden pond, once a day is the rate the UK guides keep returning to. OATA says once a day. World of Water moves to two or three feeds only when the pond is heavily stocked. Bradshaws treats twice a day as the upper end unless you are growing show fish. If yesterday's sticks were still on the surface at five minutes, skip the second handful today. Extra meals do not stand in for a working filter. If you still need a pack, the pond food buying guide is the place to choose form and weight.

Cold water, without one stop temperature

UK sources disagree on when feeding should stop, and this page will not average them into one number. OATA says that below 8°C it may be better not to feed at all, except sturgeon. World of Water says not to feed under 5°C. A 10°C figure on some wheatgerm packs is a change of recipe, not the same stop. None of the eight amazon.co.uk listings in this comparison is a dedicated wheatgerm food. Brand temperature bands are on wheatgerm and winter feeding.

When more food is the wrong fix

Gasping at the surface, a bloated shape after a new food, or fish that ignore the sticks are signs to stop feeding and look at the water. OATA's targets for a pond are ammonia at zero and nitrite at zero, and uneaten food is one route those readings climb. A retailer who knows coldwater fish, or a vet, is the right call if the fish stop eating, gasp, or look swollen, or if you keep sturgeon. A different staple from the best pond food shortlist helps only once the water is stable and the fish are taking food again.

Common questions

Should I feed pond fish once a day or several times?
Once a day suits a lightly stocked garden pond. OATA states once a day. World of Water allows two or three feeds when the pond is heavily stocked, and Bradshaws treats twice a day as the ceiling unless you are growing show fish. If the fish leave food, drop back to a single feed. A second meal will not rescue a filter that is already struggling with waste.
How long do I leave pond food on the water?
Leave it only for the few minutes the fish are eating. OATA uses that few-minutes test. World of Water and Bradshaws both say about five minutes, then you remove what is left. Floating sticks make the removal possible, because you can net them. Food still on the surface at five minutes means the portion was too large for that day, even if the fish rushed the first scatter.
Should I feed pond fish in winter?
Feed in cold weather only when the guide you follow says the water is warm enough, and those guides do not match. OATA suggests it may be better not to feed below 8°C, with sturgeon as the exception. World of Water says not to feed under 5°C. Some wheatgerm packs use a 10°C band. Keep those figures separate. A summer stick is a weak substitute once the fish have slowed.
Does a planted pond need less food?
Plants do not set the ration. World of Water still feeds a lightly stocked planted pond once a day and still expects leftovers to come off the water. Light stocking is why one feed is often enough. A crowded planted pond is a different case and may justify the extra feeds that guide allows. Watch the surface either way. Blanket weed is a water problem, and adding more sticks will not clear it.
Can I feed out-of-date pond sticks?
Spoiled sticks should stay out of the pond. Bradshaws warns against food that has gone off, because it adds waste and the fish may refuse it. A 40 litre bag can sit open for months in a shed. Sticks that smell stale, feel damp, or have been stored where rain gets in belong in the bin. A date that is still in the future does not rescue food that has already taken on moisture.
Are weekend blocks the same as a normal pond feed?
Aquarium weekend blocks are a different product, and they were not among the pond-food listings in this comparison. They release food while you are away, so the few-minutes rule cannot be applied and leftovers cannot be netted. For a short weekend, one small feed before you leave sits closer to the OATA habit. If the pond will be unattended for longer, ask someone to feed once a day and remove what remains.
