Pond fish food buying guide

Updated: 22 October 2026

You are choosing a bag for goldfish, orfe or koi, and the amazon.co.uk pages do not agree on what a large bag contains. A 40 litre title, a small tub and a protein bullet can be three different buys. This pond fish food buying guide sorts them in order: the fish you keep, whether the food should float, the grams in the pack, and whether it is a warm-season staple or a cold-water recipe. The scored table stays on [Pond food](/hub/garden-ponds/pond-food). Peter F. used amazon.co.uk shelf prices from 19 October 2026. This is not a feeding trial, and it does not name a winner. Match the food to the fish

The food has to suit the fish and the surplus you can still see. The Ornamental Aquatic Trade Association says you should offer only what goldfish, orfe or koi finish within a few minutes. Floating sticks let you net what they leave. A sinking food leaves the surface, which suits bottom feeders and is a poor default when the shoal feeds in front of you. Size matters as much as species. Swell UK's pond-food guide treats sticks as the usual choice for smaller fish and pellets as the choice for larger koi. A mixed goldfish pond, with orfe at the surface, is the stick case. Sturgeon sit outside this set. They need a sinking diet with more oil, and they are fed through the year when other coldwater fish pause. None of these eight listings is that diet. Flake is covered on pond sticks or pellets.

Read grams before litres

A litre on the title is the bag, not the food. Walters variety sticks, sold as 40 litres, state 3 kg at about £20.29. Walters variety pellets, also sold as 40 litres, show an item weight of 1 kg at about £20.80. Do not price the pellets per kilogram while those lines conflict. The stick bag can be priced at about £6.80 a kilogram. The Walters 5 litre tub prints two weights that cannot both be the contents, so leave its price per gram blank. Only three Walters pages print 18% protein, and the 40 litre bags are not among them.

Season is a different pack

Season is a different purchase from the weight you just checked. Appetite falls as the pond cools, and brands do not share one stop temperature. OATA says it may be better not to feed most pond fish below 8°C, sturgeon excepted. Other wheatgerm bands are on wheatgerm pond food. None of these eight listings is a dedicated wheatgerm winter food. An ingredient mention on a staple pack is not that recipe. Ordered in October, 3 kg of warm-season food can outlast the weeks the fish are still feeding. Wheatgerm, when you change recipe, is a second buy and is not in this comparison.

What the UK label is for

The amazon.co.uk bullet is a shop claim. The sack is the declaration. In England, labelling is enforced under SI 2015/255. Look for feed type, the business responsible, a batch reference, net quantity and additives. For pets other than cats and dogs, 'compound feed' may replace 'complete feed' under Article 15. That phrase means a mixture of ingredients sold as a diet, not a quality grade and not an 18% protein claim. If the site said 40 litres and the sack says 3 kg, the sack is what you bought. A conditional pick is on best pond food.

Common questions

Are sticks, pellets or a mix better for a mixed goldfish pond?
Floating sticks suit goldfish and orfe at the surface, because you can net leftovers. Pellets suit larger koi more than small goldfish, though a bigger goldfish may take what juveniles ignore. A mix of two sizes is a compromise, not a match for every fish. Sinking food is a different job.
Why is a 40 litre bag of pond food so light?
Litres are the bag, not the mass. Walters 40 litre sticks are 3 kg at about £20.29. The 40 litre pellets show an item weight of 1 kg at about £20.80. Air in the pieces keeps the sack looking bulkier than the food inside. Do not price the pellets per kilogram while those lines conflict.
Do I need the pond food protein percentage?
Use a percentage only when that page prints it. Three Walters listings show 18%: the 10 litre sticks at 900 g and about £9.99, the super mix at 480 g and about £8.99, and the 5 litre tub at about £11.99. The 40 litre bags do not. That figure is not a winter recipe.
Is wheatgerm pond food a separate buy?
Yes, if colder water means a change of recipe. None of these eight listings is a wheatgerm winter food, even where wheatgerm is an ingredient. Brand bands disagree. OATA's pause below 8°C is not that diet, and it excepts sturgeon.
Can I use these foods for sturgeon?
No. They need a sinking food with more oil, and they are fed through the cold when goldfish often are not. That is OATA's advice, not a line on these packs. If sturgeon are in the pond, ask a retailer or a vet before you choose from this set.
What should a UK pond-food pack say?
The sack should show the feed type, the business responsible, a batch code, the net quantity and the additives. For pets other than cats and dogs, 'compound feed' may replace 'complete feed'. A 40 litre title is not the net weight. If the website and the sack disagree, keep the sack.
What if the listing weight lines disagree?
Do not calculate a price per gram. The Walters 5 litre tub is about £11.99 and shows 2,267.96 g against an item weight of 500 g, and one reviewer reported 596 g. Prefer the 3 kg sticks or the 150 g Tetra tub, where one weight is agreed, and check the pack on arrival.
