Can you walk on a garden bridge?

Updated: 22 October 2026

You are standing at the edge of a lined pond, and the arch looks like a path. Before a child or a dog steps on, you need a straight answer to whether you can walk on a garden bridge. The listing may say walkable, print a garden bridge weight capacity, or say decorative use only, on arches that look alike. Cross only when the listing does not say decorative, the deck is wide enough to stand on, and you still treat any kilogram figure as untested. The [pond bridge comparison](/hub/garden-ponds/pond-bridge) sets the models side by side. Peter F. checked the amazon.co.uk wording on 20 October 2026 and did not load-test these arches.

Read decorative before the stars

If the listing says decorative use only, or the deck is under about 30 cm, nobody walks on it. Shine 4963N is marked for decorative use only, the deck is 27.9 cm wide, and there is no load. Treat that decorative garden bridge as something to look at from the bank. A walkable title is still not a test. Relaxdays puts walkable in the title and prints no kilogram in the bullets, while UK reviews say an adult should stay off. Outsunny, a fir arch outside this set, says people cannot walk on it and states a 5 kg maximum. If you decide someone may cross, where the feet sit on a liner is the job of how to install a garden bridge.

A load figure is a claim

A printed garden bridge weight capacity is the seller’s claim, not a UK standard test for these listings. Pyracantha treats many cheap arches as ornamental even when a 150 kg line is printed. GardenBridge.co.uk states a 100 kg point load only for bridges on its own foundations, and that limit does not transfer to these flat-packs. The chain-rail Relaxdays claims about 150 kg, and a review says about 70 kg cracked the deck. Happygrill prints a 400 lb claim, and a review disputes sag around a stated 230 lb user. OLBRUS prints 770 lb. Leave that figure in pounds. Reviews under United States headings describe people crossing, and they call the deck slick. The best garden bridge page names who should skip each model.

Rails, children and dogs

Garden bridge handrail height on these cheap arches is often around 50 cm. Approved Document K is the guarding rule for stairs and landings in buildings. These low rails are not that guarding, and this page does not call a garden bridge safe for children. If the rail is low enough to step over, keep children off even after one adult has crossed. The drop is into water or onto a liner. A taller rail would not turn the 27.9 cm Shine 4963N into a path. A garden bridge for dogs is a poor bet when a paw can drop between slats. OLBRUS reviews under United States headings mention paw gaps on a deck also called slick. If the listing never states the gap, measure it before a dog steps on.

If it fails under the stated load

If the deck cracks under the stated load, stop using it. The Consumer Rights Act 2015 is the ordinary rule for goods bought from a trader. Section 9 expects satisfactory quality, which includes safety, and section 11 expects the goods to match the description. A 150 kg line and a walkable title are descriptions. Decorative use only points the other way. Keep the listing, the photographs and the order. Tell the seller what the page stated and what the deck did. Two people in the middle are a point load these figures rarely describe. Plan for one person, and only after the decorative and width tests have passed.

Common questions

Can an adult walk across it?
An adult should cross only when the listing does not say decorative use only, the deck is wider than about 30 cm, and reviews do not report a failure under the printed load. Shine 4963N fails on the label and on a 27.9 cm deck. One careful crossing is not a test you then repeat with someone beside you.
Is walkable in the title enough?
Walkable is a word in the title, not a capacity. It does not replace a load, a deck width, or a review record. If the bullets give no kilograms, you have a photograph and a marketing line. A limit stated for a bridge on that maker’s foundations does not transfer to these flat-packs.
What does 150 kg mean if a review says it cracked?
The seller printed a figure and a buyer reported a failure at a lower one. On the chain-rail Relaxdays the claim is about 150 kg, and a review says about 70 kg cracked the deck. Treat 150 kg as untested for that arch. Pyracantha already treats many cheap arches as ornamental when a 150 kg line is printed. Do not average the two numbers and stand between them.
Are the rails high enough for a child?
Rails around 50 cm are low for a child who leans or climbs. They are not Approved Document K guarding, and this page does not call these arches safe for children. If a child might step on the arch, keep the route on the ground. A higher rail would not turn the 27.9 cm Shine 4963N into a path, because that listing says decorative use only.
Will a dog’s paw fit through the slats?
It can. OLBRUS reviews under United States headings describe gaps a paw can meet, on a deck also called slick. If the opening looks wide enough for a paw, or the listing never states the gap, keep the dog on the bank until you have measured.
What should I do if the bridge fails under the stated load?
Stop using it. Keep the listing, your photographs and the order, and tell the seller what was stated and what the deck did. Section 9 of the Consumer Rights Act 2015 covers satisfactory quality, including safety, and section 11 covers a match to the description. Do not cross a cracked deck while you wait for a reply.
