Wooden or metal garden bridge

Updated: 22 October 2026

You have a tape on the lawn and two amazon.co.uk tabs open: a cedar arch you would stain, and a black steel span sold as ready for the weather. A wooden or metal garden bridge is that choice. Fir and cedar fail when water sits in the grain or a film cracks. Powder-coated steel fails when the coat chips, and the deck can be slick after rain. Prices and the rows stay on the [pond bridge comparison](/hub/garden-ponds/pond-bridge). Peter F. read the listings on 19 October 2026 and ran no load test. What cedar, fir and powder coat are in this set

The timber here is not one material. Shine 4980N is unfinished kiln-dried cedar, 123.2 cm and 9.96 kg, at about £193.65. All Things Cedar is western red cedar, also unfinished, about 119 cm, at about £316.03. Relaxdays is fir with an orange waterborne coat, about 140 cm, at about £85.90. OLBRUS is powder-coated steel, 246.38 cm and 21.45 kg, at about £229.31. GiantexUK is 118 cm and 13 kg, at about £87.99, with no steel grade in the bullets. The cladding handbook treats western red cedar heartwood as a durable softwood above ground, and fir as a timber that usually needs protection. That is a use class, not a number of years. Powder coat is a baked finish, not a metal that cannot rust.

When a wooden garden bridge is the better fit

Choose stainable cedar when you will finish it and the gap is near 1.2 m. Shine 4980N arrives sanded, and the listing says you can paint or stain it. All Things Cedar arrives unfinished even when the photograph looks sealed. Leave either bare through the first wet week and the end grain takes water before a later coat sits evenly. Skip thin fir if an adult will stand on the arch. The Relaxdays title says walkable, and UK reviews call the fir flimsy and say an adult should stay off. A waterborne coat does not turn fir into cedar heartwood. Happygrill’s HG1996 is fir as well, at two prices with the same review texts, so the higher price is not a harder wood. Cedar still needs a coat, and the feet should sit on slabs. Consumer creosote treatment is prohibited under the Creosote Regulations 2003.

When a metal garden bridge is the better fit

Choose powder-coated steel when you will not keep a stain cycle and the gap is near 2.4 m. OLBRUS is 246.38 cm overall with a 73.66 cm deck, at about £229.31. Reviewers wanted a second person for the 21.45 kg carry, and one called the deck slick when damp. Those 23 texts are from the United States. The stated 770 lb, about 349 kg, stays the seller’s claim. A chip at a foot is where bare metal meets rain, and the listing gives no number of seasons. GiantexUK is the short steel option at about £87.99, with a 150 kg claim and two UK reviews from summer 2026. OLBRUS stakes are for soil or grass. Drive them through a pond liner and you puncture it.

The condition that settles it

If you will stain the bridge and the gap is near 1.2 m, take cedar. Shine 4980N prints no load figure. All Things Cedar is the wider, lower deck, and its 400 lb line, about 181 kg, is a claim. Neither covers a gap near 2.4 m. If the gap is near 2.4 m and you will move 21.45 kg with help, take the OLBRUS steel and accept wet grip and stakes that stay out of the liner. In this set that span is the top pick and Shine 4980N is the best value among the wider decks. Who should skip each one is on the best garden bridge page. Leave the Relaxdays fir where UK reviews tell an adult to stay off. Take GiantexUK only for a short gap under £100.

Common questions

Will steel rust in a UK winter?
A powder-coated metal garden bridge rusts where the coat is broken, not because a British winter dissolves intact steel overnight. OLBRUS and GiantexUK both sell that finish, and neither names a steel grade or a number of seasons. The 23 OLBRUS reviews are from the United States. Check the coat at the feet after the first wet months.
Will fir rot if it is varnished?
A varnish slows water. It does not make fir as durable as cedar heartwood. The Relaxdays arch at about £85.90 has an orange waterborne coat, and UK reviews still call the fir thin and say an adult should stay off. When the film cracks, the grain takes rain.
Is cedar maintenance-free?
No. Western red cedar heartwood is a durable above-ground softwood, not a bridge you never finish. Shine 4980N and All Things Cedar arrive unfinished, and both listings expect paint or stain. Bare cedar weathers, greys, and takes water at the end grain. The use class is not a year count. If you will not stain it, cedar is the wrong pick in this set.
Which is less slippery when wet?
In this set the steel deck is the one called slick when damp. An OLBRUS reviewer suggested grip tape. That text is from the United States. A film-finished fir deck can be smooth too. Neither side has a tested non-slip rating.
Which is heavier to move?
The long steel arch is the heavy carry, not every metal bridge. OLBRUS weighs 21.45 kg, and reviewers wanted a second person. GiantexUK is 13 kg and Shine 4980N is 9.96 kg. All Things Cedar prints 11.34 kg on one line and 13.15 kg on another, so that weight is unsettled.
Which is better over a liner?
Timber is the calmer choice beside a liner if the feet sit on slabs and nothing sharp goes into the rubber. Water Feature Design says wooden bridges should keep their feet off the soil. OLBRUS includes four stakes for soil or grass, and those stakes will puncture a pond liner. A steel arch can sit on pads if you leave the stakes unused.
