How to install a garden bridge

Updated: 22 October 2026

You are on the lawn with a flat-pack, a lined pond or a dry creek ahead, and one afternoon in which a foot or a stake can hole the rubber. How to install a garden bridge, for the kits on the [pond bridge comparison](/hub/garden-ponds/pond-bridge), runs pads, then screws, then a finish on bare cedar, then an anchor in soil. Peter F. read those amazon.co.uk listings on 19 October 2026 and did not fit a kit on a live pond. A qualifying purchase can earn a commission at no extra cost to you.

Sit the feet off the liner

The feet belong on pads beside the liner, or on a slab with matting, so the rubber is never the bearing surface. World of Water describes footings with underlay on both sides of the liner and concrete kept out of the water. Aqua Liners Direct puts matting between the slabs and the liner, and it wants the liner above the waterline. On a dry creek, two level pads, wider than the feet, are enough if they do not rock. On a liner, add matting where the pad bears. If the only flat place is the liner itself, stop. Measure the gap between the inner edges of the pads, not the length on the carton.

Assemble the flat-pack

Garden bridge assembly is a two-person job on the ground. OLBRUS is a two-person carry and takes about an hour to an hour and a half once the parts are laid out. Happygrill and Relaxdays come as picture instructions, and reviewers report holes that do not line up and screws that split dry fir. Wet the fir where the screw will enter, or drill a pilot slightly narrower than the shank, then drive the screw by hand. A cordless driver at full speed often cracks the first rail near an end. These listings publish no torque figure. Build the arch on the grass, because a frame dropped into the pond is a puncture and a soaked kit together.

Finish unfinished cedar

Shine 4980N and All Things Cedar arrive unfinished, and reviewers stain them before or after they are screwed together. Bare cedar in the first wet week takes water into the end grain, so a later coat sits on timber that has already moved. A stain or a water-repellent sealer is the finish these kits take. Creosote is not that finish. Stain a cedar garden bridge before assembly if you can reach every face, including the ends on the pads. Coating afterwards still beats bare timber, though the undersides are harder once the arch is up. Let the coat dry before the lift, or a tacky stain will mark the liner. Metal decks do not take cedar stain. A damp tread is slippery, and OLBRUS is noted as slippery when wet.

Anchor without a puncture

The stakes are for soil or grass. OLBRUS supplies four. Drive them into firm ground beside the pond, where the point meets earth and not rubber. Do not hammer a stake through the liner, and do not leave a narrow foot on the liner without a pad. Set the bridge on the pads, check that it does not rock, then stake. A stake that pulls out in one tug has not held, so move to firmer ground or widen the pad. On slabs the stakes often have nowhere to go. Do not copy GardenBridge.co.uk’s concrete pads and anchor bolts onto these kits.

When to get help

Stop when the job is no longer a flat-pack over your own pond or dry creek. A ditch with someone else’s water, a main river, or a crossing a wheelchair has to use is outside these kits. Four stakes from amazon.co.uk do not settle consent. Call a joiner if the banks differ in height, if the liner is already creased under the feet, or if a dry fit will not meet the pictures. If the arch is a light ornament and the pads are level and clear of the liner, two people can finish on a dry afternoon. If anyone will walk it, use the can you walk on a garden bridge page before the stakes count as finished.

Common questions

Can the feet sit on the liner?
No. Pads or slabs with matting take the load, and Aqua Liners Direct wants matting between the slab and the liner, with the liner above the waterline. A narrow foot on bare rubber can puncture it on the first step. If the liner is the only level patch, leave the kit on the lawn.
What are the ground stakes for?
They pin the feet into soil or grass. OLBRUS includes four. They are not driven through a pond liner, and on paving they often have no purchase. If a stake pulls out in one tug, move to firmer ground or a wider pad.
Should I stain cedar before I screw it together?
Reach every face first, including the end grain, on unfinished cedar such as Shine 4980N or All Things Cedar. Staining after the screws still beats a bare first wet week. Let the coat dry before the lift. Creosote is not the finish.
How do I stop the wood splitting?
Wet the fir or drill a pilot narrower than the screw, then drive it by hand. Dry fir on Happygrill and Relaxdays splits, and the instructions are only pictures. A driver at full speed near a rail end is a typical crack. If the pilot will not start, stop.
What if the holes do not line up?
Ease the joint by hand. Happygrill and Relaxdays reviewers report holes that miss the pictures. Pulling the timber across with the screw splits the rail. If a dry fit still will not close, a joiner should take the kit before the rail cracks.
When should a joiner take over?
Call one when the banks are uneven, the liner is creased under the feet, or the parts will not meet. Also stop for a ditch, a main river, or a wheelchair route. Four stakes do not settle consent for someone else’s water.
