Amazon frogbit buying guide

Updated: 22 October 2026

You are on amazon.co.uk with twelve floating-plant titles that look like the same frogbit. Some print a Latin name, one is a gel cup of plantlets, and several promise a count the unit-count field does not repeat. This amazon frogbit buying guide is the order of checks before you add a listing: the species on the title, the parcel format, then what the price is buying. The [frogbit comparison](/hub/garden-ponds/frogbit) holds the twelve-row table and the prices as they stood on 19 October 2026. This page does not crown a winner, and it does not walk you through weekly care.

Name the plant on the title

The common name is the weakest line on the title, because three names in this grid are not interchangeable. Two listings print Limnobium laevigatum. One names Limnobium spongia, sold as American frogbit, with a bullet that leaves can reach 20 cm wide. Nine Live Seeds titles say Amazon frogbit, or Limnobium without the species epithet. They share one care paragraph, and none has a UK review line. A title that stops at the common name does not confirm laevigatum. The Royal Horticultural Society lists Limnobium laevigatum as not native to Great Britain or Ireland. European frogbit, Hydrocharis morsus-ranae, is not in these twelve rows. Leaf, winter bud and native status sit on the Amazon versus European frogbit page.

Cup or loose plants

The Tropica line is a 1-2-Grow tissue-culture cup, part 063 TC. You rinse the gel and float the plantlets. You do not receive a mature mat. The snail-free bullet is a seller claim: one UK review found snails anyway. Praise covers recovery in shrimp or betta tanks. Complaints cover yellow leaves, short counts, and death in a pond or in moving water. The loose named laevigatum parcel is marked indoor. Its bullets say 1–5 cm tall and leaves 5–15 cm wide, while the height field says 15 cm, so those figures are not one mature size. American frogbit is a third parcel, with the wide-leaf bullet and no reviews.

What the price is buying

On 19 October 2026 the twelve files ran from £7.09 to £14.80. Entry is about £7.09 to £7.40. Mid is about £9.20 to £12.99. Ten-packs sit at about £14.45 to £14.80, with no review line and no laevigatum on the title. A ten-pack is not the better buy by default. The Live Seeds unit-count field is 1.0 against titles that claim 3, 5, 6 or 10 plants. You cannot divide £14.80 by ten and call it a verified price per plant. B0GRSL4SM7 and B0GRSHH5SZ share one image, and all nine repeat one care line. That is one seller text, not nine trials. A conditional pick is on the best frogbit page.

What this guide will not decide

This page will not tell you to leave Amazon frogbit in a British pond over winter. Bennetts and Plants for Ponds call it not frost hardy, and Tropica marks the cup for indoor use. One Live Seeds title mentions a pond and an aquarium bio-filter, which is title wording, not a hardiness test. If the water is outdoors, including a summer plant you will lift, read the pond or aquarium page first. Hydrocharis morsus-ranae is the native plant, and it is not in these twelve rows. Buy nursery stock for a wildlife pond, and do not collect wild plants. Ten listings have no review line, which is not zero stars. We did not run a lab test.

Common questions

Which listings actually print Limnobium laevigatum?
Two titles print Limnobium laevigatum: Tropica cup B07NY3TBSV at £10.00, and loose listing B084QF3XFQ at £12.99. B09D4TXY4V prints Limnobium spongia, sold as American frogbit. Nine Live Seeds titles say Amazon frogbit or Limnobium without the epithet. A matching common name does not confirm laevigatum.
Is the £10.00 cup a mature mat or a pot of plantlets?
It is a Tropica 1-2-Grow cup, part 063 TC. You rinse the gel and float plantlets. A closed mat is the grown plant, not day one. Specialist shops listed the same cup at about £5.38 to £7.99, so £10.00 is not the lowest UK cup price.
Why do nine Live Seeds pages share one care paragraph?
They are pack sizes from one seller, about £7.35 to £14.80, repeating one temperature and flow sentence. That is not nine trials. B0GRSL4SM7 and B0GRSHH5SZ share an image, and none has a review line. A ten-pack does not add UK buyer evidence the three-pack lacks.
Does a title count of 10 match the unit-count field?
No. Titles claim 3, 5, 6 or 10 plants, but the Live Seeds unit-count field is 1.0. Treat the title number as a stated count, not a confirmed unit. One reviewer of the separate three-plant listing received four plants, so the count can slip even when the species is named.
Is American frogbit a small-tank plant?
B09D4TXY4V says leaves can reach 20 cm wide, so it is a poor fit for a small aquarium. Three plants cost £7.09 and there is no review line. The lower price does not change that bullet.
Should a wildlife pond start on this page?
No. These listings are indoor stock or 18–30 °C Live Seeds lines, and UK nurseries say Amazon frogbit is not frost hardy. It is not native. Use the Amazon versus European page for the British plant, then the pond page for hardiness and waste water.
Are missing star ratings the same as zero stars?
No. Ten listings had no review line on 19 October 2026. That is not zero stars, and not evidence of dislike. B07NY3TBSV is 3.9 from 97. B084QF3XFQ is 4.4 from 5, with three texts. A missing line means there is no UK rating to quote.
