How to choose a pond filter

Updated: 22 October 2026

You have measured the liner with a tape, or you are standing over a half-barrel, and the amazon.co.uk title answers with a litre number. A pond filter is still a layout, a flow, and a plug before it is a brand. This page orders the checks that stop a bad order: your real volume, where the cleaned water has to go, whether a pump is in the box, and the voltage the listing prints. Prices from 19 October 2026 are on the [pond filter comparison](/hub/garden-ponds/pond-filter). Peter F. compared those listings and the public UK sources below. This is not a lab test. What the litre line is actually saying

The Royal Horticultural Society volume for a rectangle is length times width times average depth, in metres, times 1,000. A pond 2 metres by 1.5 metres at 0.5 metres average depth is about 1,500 litres before shelves. The litre figure in the title is the seller’s ornamental ceiling. Water Garden’s note on OASE model names, a shop rule of thumb and not a British Standard, halves that ceiling for fish and quarters it for koi. A 4,000 litre title would, on that shop rule alone, read as about 2,000 litres with goldfish and about 1,000 litres for koi. UK shops also disagree on turnover, from about every four hours for goldfish on one page to about once an hour on another. Where volume and flow are both printed, the headline pass before head loss is about 4.3 hours for the Blagdon title (3,000 litres at 700 litres per hour), about 1.6 hours for the Biling at the 4,000 litre top of a range a bullet also prints as 800–4,000 litres, and about two hours for the Fish Mate 10000 at 10,000 litres and 5,000 litres per hour, before the hose.

Layout before brand

The RHS describes four layouts. This set covers three. An in-pond unit sits in the water. A sealed pressurised canister can push a return uphill if the pump is strong enough. A gravity box lets water fall back, and the RHS notes that this outflow will not run a fountain. A true bottom-drain filter is not among the nine. The RHS treats internal filters as a choice for smaller, lightly stocked ponds, and says they circulate unevenly. It also says a pressurised filter should not be the choice for a heavily stocked koi pond. A gravity outlet has to sit above the pond surface or the box floods. Water Garden treats 24-hour running as normal once the filter is biological. Where the box sits is on pressurised or in-pond.

Flow, head, and what is in the box

Litres per hour on a title are a low-lift maximum. Pads, a canister, and a fountain head cut them. The Blagdon states 700 litres per hour and a 1.25 metre lift. The Biling states 2,500 litres per hour. The FEOXSHAL states 3,100 litres per hour and prints lift as 9.8 ft. The POPOSOAP 20 W states 1,200 litres per hour. The 4 W, the 8 W, the Fish Mate 2500 GUV, and the Fish Mate 15000 do not state a flow in this file. The three Fish Mate rows do not list a pump. The 10000 maker page talks about cable and watts, but that page is not this Amazon listing, so those figures stay off the row. The Biling, the FEOXSHAL, and the Blagdon put a pump in the kit. Bio-balls are not a pump. If the included line is silent, you are buying the housing only.

Voltage, plug, and solar

UK mains are nominal 230 V. Regulation 35 of the Electrical Equipment (Safety) Regulations 2016 expects a correct plug on a lead for a BS 1363 socket, or a non-UK plug in an approved conversion plug with the right fuse. The FEOXSHAL voltage field says 110 V AC, and a UK plug is not stated. That row stops on a normal outdoor socket. The Biling included line says a UK plug, and at least one saved UK review says it is not. Voltage is absent from that spec table. The Blagdon spec says 12 V and 10 W. Its included line does not list a BS 1363 plug, and UK review titles include plugs that were not fitted. Electrical Safety First wants an RCD on a mains pond pump, tested at least every three months. The POPOSOAP 4 W and 20 W do not state a battery. The 8 W claims 3,000 mAh and cloudy-day flow, and saved UK titles include a battery backup that does not work and a shut-off in darkness.

Questions before you order

Before you pay, read your measured volume against the title ceiling, whether the return has to climb, the stated litres per hour and lift, whether a pump, hose, and plug are in the included line, and the voltage field, including a blank, 12 V, or 110 V. Who should keep or skip each named row is on the best pond filter page.

Common questions

What size pond filter do I need?
Measure a simple rectangle as length times width times average depth in metres, times 1,000, and treat shelves as an estimate. The litre figure in the title is the seller’s ornamental ceiling. Water Garden’s OASE note, a shop rule of thumb, halves that ceiling for fish and quarters it for koi. Use your measured litres, then the flow the listing actually states.
Do I need a UV clarifier on the filter?
You need one if the water is green with suspended algae and you want that algae clumped so the pads can catch it. The RHS describes that clumping. It does not describe blanketweed, and it does not promise a number of days. In this set the Blagdon states a 5 W UV, the Fish Mate 10000 puts UV on the bullets, and the Fish Mate 2500 GUV is a UV box. The 15000 puts UV in the title only. The mechanism is on the UV and green water page.
Does a Fish Mate pond filter include a pump?
Not on these three listings. The 2500 GUV, the 15000, and the 10000 describe the housing, media, and in some cases a UV chamber. They do not list a pump, a hose, or a plug. The Biling, the FEOXSHAL, and the Blagdon do include a pump. Confirm the included line on the day you order, because a live page can move.
Why does a UK pond filter listing say 110 V?
The FEOXSHAL spec table in this file says 110 V AC, and it does not state a UK plug. UK domestic supply is nominal 230 V. Regulation 35 expects a correct plug on a lead for a BS 1363 socket. A 110 V appliance is a stop on a normal outdoor socket. The Biling is a separate conflict: the included line says a UK plug, a review says it does not, and voltage is not in the table.
Is the star rating a water test?
No. The figures here are amazon.co.uk star lines saved on 19 October 2026. The Fish Mate 2500 GUV is 4.5 from 710 and the Blagdon is 4.0 from 1,683. Neither count measures ammonia or clarity. Reviews can describe green water easing or a unit that failed in weeks. This comparison did not repeat them in a lab.
What should I check before the filter goes in the water?
Match the voltage and the plug to a UK supply, including the FEOXSHAL 110 V field and the Blagdon 12 V spec. Confirm a pump is either in the box or already on the shelf. Site a gravity outlet above the pond surface, and do not expect that outlet to run a raised fountain. Put an RCD on a mains pump and test it at least every three months, which is the Electrical Safety First garden advice. If the job is a new circuit, stop and use an electrician.
