Pressurised or in-pond filter

Updated: 22 October 2026

You want the pump noise away from the bench, or you want a waterfall onto a raised beach, and the listing only offers two names. A pressurised or in-pond filter choice is really three layouts, and treating a gravity box as a canister is how the box floods or the waterfall starves. This page chooses from where the cleaned water has to go. If the return must rise, buy a pressurised canister and a separate pump. If the hardware has to sit in a small, lightly stocked pond and fall back as a fountain, an in-pond unit is the match. If the outlet can spill above the surface and you do not need a climb, the gravity box is the third machine. Prices stay on the [pond filter comparison](/hub/garden-ponds/pond-filter). Peter F. used the RHS, Water Garden, and the staged listings. This is not a lab test. A qualifying purchase through our links can earn a commission at no extra cost to you.

Three layouts, not two

The RHS describes four filter layouts. An internal unit sits in the pond. An external pressurised canister is sealed. An external pump-fed filter returns by gravity. A true gravity-fed bottom drain is a fourth system. Shoppers collapse the middle two because both boxes can stand on the ground. They do not behave the same once the pump stops. Water Garden’s selection guide puts the practical split in one place. A pressurised canister can push water uphill and can be disguised, and the inlet and outlet should stay above the water so a stopped pump does not dump the canister back. The pump has to overcome the canister, so it is often thirstier than a pump that only lifts into an open box. A gravity outlet must sit above the pond surface. You cannot push uphill after that outlet. All Pond Solutions’ support note says the same thing in plainer words: a sealed canister can sit below water level and feed a waterfall, and a box filter floods if it sits too low. That page is a retailer explanation, not a test. In this set of nine, the two Fish Mate PUV models are the pressurised canisters, the 2500 GUV is the gravity box, and the Blagdon, the Biling, and the FEOXSHAL are in the water. The three POPOSOAP rows are solar fountains. They are not external canisters with a different badge. How the litre line works is the buying guide.

When the return has to rise

Choose pressure when the cleaned water has to reach a raised spout, a waterfall lip, or a filter that you want hidden below the surface of the ground while the outlet still climbs. The Fish Mate 10000 is titled at 5,000 litres per hour for ponds up to 10,000 litres, and the bullets do state combined UV and biological filtration. The pump is not stated. A saved review says a compatible pump is required. You are buying a housing that can hold pressure, then a pump strong enough to pay for the media and the height. Water Garden’s point about a thirstier pump sits on that second purchase, not on the filter’s star line. The Fish Mate 15000 is titled for ponds up to 15,000 litres. No flow is stated in this file. The title says UV and the bullets do not, so you should not count on a clarifier until you have seen it in the carton. Both canisters are the rows for a rising return. The RHS says a pressurised filter should not be the choice for a heavily stocked koi pond, so a large litre title is not permission to load the pond as a koi system and hope the canister copes. Fish Mate’s instructions say not to immerse the canister. Hiding it means burial with the lid accessible, which the install guide covers, not sinking it in the pond because the word external sounded flexible. If you only need the water to fall back in, pressure is extra resistance and an extra pump to size. The open fountain on an in-pond kit is the simpler return, with the limit that the RHS already puts on stock and on uneven circulation.

When the box can sit in the water

An in-pond filter is the convenient layout when the pond is small, the stock is light, and you want the fountain in the same place as the pump. The Blagdon Inpond 5-in-1 3000 is that shape: pump, filter, a stated 5 W UV, an LED, and three heads, titled up to 3,000 litres, at 700 litres per hour and a lift of 1.25 metres. The lift is a fountain height, not a buried canister feeding a waterfall across the garden. The RHS treats internal units as suitable for smaller, lightly stocked ponds and notes that they circulate unevenly. A heavily stocked koi pond is the case to skip, even if the unit fits on the floor. The Biling and the FEOXSHAL are also in the water, and they are pump-and-box kits rather than external canisters. The Biling states 2,500 litres per hour. The FEOXSHAL states 3,100 litres per hour and 60 W. Neither becomes a pressure filter because the flow number is higher than the Blagdon’s. The FEOXSHAL voltage field says 110 V AC, which is an electrical stop on a UK socket and is dealt with on the install page, not a reason to reclassify the box. You lift these units out to clean them. Swell’s retailer note is not to pull an in-pond filter out by the cable. If you wanted the hardware out of sight beside the shed, you wanted a canister, and these three will not become one after you have sunk them.

The gravity box

The Fish Mate 2500 GUV is gravity. It is a UV and bio box with a quartzless chamber, and the bullets do not list a pump or a flow. The model name says 2500. The spec table does not give a litre ceiling. People file it with the other Fish Mate boxes because the brand matches. The outlet rule does not match. It has to sit so water can fall back above the pond surface. Set it lower and the box floods. Ask it to feed a waterfall and it cannot, which is the RHS point about this kind of outflow and fountains. It is the layout when you already have a pump, you can give the box a place above the water, and the return is a spill rather than a climb. It is a poor substitute for the 10000 or the 15000 if the photograph in your head shows a raised stream. Reviews in this set talk about bulbs, a short inlet, and a lid, which are maintenance limits on a gravity box, not evidence that the box is secretly pressurised. Water Garden treats 24-hour running as normal for a biological filter. A gravity box on a timer that only runs in the evening is a different regime from the one those guides describe. The solar fountains sit outside this choice. The POPOSOAP 4 W, 8 W, and 20 W are in the water, they are not pressure filters, and the 4 W and 20 W do not state a battery. They do not solve pressurised or in the pond for a fish pond that needs a mains return. They are what you have when there is no socket, and only while the panel is actually feeding the pump.

What this set does not include

A bottom-drain filter, fed by gravity from a drain in the pond floor into a large external box, is the fourth RHS layout. None of these nine is that system. You cannot assemble it by burying a Fish Mate 15000 or by standing the 2500 GUV on a patio. If your pond was built with a bottom drain and a settlement chamber, you are outside this table and you need a filter written for that pipe. The recommendation stays with the return you measured. Rise means a pressurised Fish Mate canister plus a pump, and not for a heavily stocked koi pond on the RHS wording. A small light stock and a fountain in the pond means the Blagdon or a pump-and-box kit, with the 110 V FEOXSHAL excluded on a UK socket. A spill back from above the surface means the 2500 GUV, once you own a pump. Who should skip a named row is the best pond filter page.

Common questions

Should I buy a pressurised or an in-pond filter?
Buy pressurised if the cleaned water has to rise, and buy an in-pond unit if the pond is small, lightly stocked, and the return is a fountain in the water. The gravity box is a third answer when the outlet can sit above the surface and you do not need a climb. The POPOSOAP solar rows are fountains with filter boxes, not a fourth way to run a waterfall.
Can a gravity pond filter run a waterfall?
No. The RHS and Water Garden both treat a gravity outflow as a fall back into the pond. It will not push water up to a waterfall or a raised fountain. In this set that is the Fish Mate 2500 GUV. The Fish Mate 10000 and 15000 are the pressurised canisters, and they still need a pump that is not in the Amazon bullets.
Can I hide a pressurised pond filter?
Yes, with the limit in the instructions. A sealed canister can be disguised or partly buried if the lid stays reachable and the unit is not immersed. Fish Mate says not to immerse the canister. Water Garden wants the inlet and outlet above water level so a stopped pump does not empty the housing back into the pond. Hiding it under the surface of the pond is a different layout.
Why does a Fish Mate filter still need a pump?
The 10000, the 15000, and the 2500 GUV do not list a pump in the bullets. The canister or the gravity box is the housing and the media. Pressure takes a pump that can overcome the media and the height. Gravity takes a pump that can deliver water up to an outlet that then falls back. The Biling, the FEOXSHAL, and the Blagdon are the rows where the pump is already in the kit, and those kits sit in the pond.
Is an in-pond all-in-one enough for koi?
The RHS says internal filters suit smaller, lightly stocked ponds and that a pressurised filter should not be the choice for a heavily stocked koi pond. The Blagdon is titled to 3,000 litres at 700 litres per hour. That is the small-pond case, not a koi system at the top of a 10,000 or 15,000 litre canister title. A true bottom-drain koi filter is not in this set at all.
What happens if the gravity outlet is below the surface?
The box floods. Water Garden’s guide is plain about that: the outlet has to stay above the pond, and you cannot send the water uphill afterwards. Raising the 2500 GUV, or lowering the water, is the fix. Connecting the outlet to a buried hose and hoping it behaves like the 10000 will not turn a gravity lid into a pressure vessel.
