How to use blanketweed treatment

Updated: 22 October 2026

You are at the pond with the cap in your hand, or you are looking at milky water the morning after and wondering whether to add more. How to use blanketweed treatment is the order of work for the tubs on our [blanketweed treatment comparison](/hub/garden-ponds/blanketweed-treatment). It is not a second ranking, and it is not a licence to dose a newt pond. The cloud, the blocked pump, and fish at the surface are usually the dose working, the weed dying, or an oxygen problem. Before the cap comes off

Confirm you can lift hair-like strands. Pea-soup green water is a different job. Litres are length times width times average depth in metres, times 1,000. A 2 m by 1.5 m pond at 0.5 m average depth is 1,500 litres. Dosing that from a 10,000 litre headline is the mistake this page is trying to stop. Run air before you pour in warm, still weather. NT Labs bars a dose at daybreak, in hot or thundery weather, and within three hours of feeding. The Royal Horticultural Society says leave pulled weed on the bank for 48 hours. DanKoi, passing on Blanket Answer, says leave the weed in because of spores, then net it about a week later. The label in your hand wins.

Mix and spread

Mix the label dose in pond water, then walk it around the surface. Cloverleaf’s rate is 10 g per 125 litres, so a 1,500 litre pond is 120 g, and the UV stays on. Evolution Aqua’s 2 kg powder is one scoop per 400 litres every 14 days. Stop Blanketweed is 30 g per 900 litres once a week for about three weeks. Reviewers stir it, because dry granules do not dissolve. envii uses 50 ml per 1,000 litres in the morning for submerged algae, repeated after seven days. A 1,500 litre pond is 75 ml. The amazon field that says 20,000 litres is not the dose. Which tub to open is on the blanketweed treatment buying guide.

Milky water is a stage

Cloverleaf expects milky water for about five days, then weed breaking down. Adding a second dose the same afternoon is the common misread. Evolution Aqua’s natural powder can stay cloudy for up to five days. NT Labs times its cloud in hours, so that five-day wait is the wrong clock for that tub. Stop Blanketweed’s clock is the week. envii aims for a result within three weeks, with a repeat after seven days. Cloverleaf asks for 10 days before another treatment. Do not add a sludge product the same evening to cancel the cloud. Pre-Vent, every 10 to 14 days above 10°C, is the follow-up after a clear-out.

The filter, the oxygen, and when to stop

Dying blanketweed turns to sludge and blocks the pump. Rinse mechanical media and leave the biological media alone. Net loosened weed and leave it on the bank for 48 hours if anything might be living in it. Fish at the surface need air, not a second dose. One Cloverleaf reviewer reported an ammonia spike. Stop if the fish do not settle. A herbicide near water in England needs Environment Agency agreement. If frogs or newts are spawning in the weed, use the blanketweed treatment wildlife pond page.

Common questions

Do I pull the weed out before I dose?
The RHS and That Pond Guy say take the bulk out first and leave it on the bank for 48 hours. A retailer passing on Blanket Answer says leave it in because of spores, then net it about a week later. Follow the label you bought when those conflict. If you pull weed, do not compost it the same hour.
Pond water or tap water in the watering can?
Pond water, where the label says to mix the powder first. Cloverleaf, NT Labs, and Evolution Aqua’s natural powder are all described that way. Tap water is a different chemistry from the pond you are treating. Spread the mixed can around the surface. The gram or millilitre rate still has to be the rate on your pack.
The water went white. Has it failed?
On Cloverleaf, milky water for about five days is the expected stage. Evolution Aqua’s natural powder can stay cloudy for up to five days. NT Labs times its cloud in hours. A second dose the same day misreads the stage. Wait for the interval printed on the product you actually poured.
When do I clean the pump?
When dying weed starts to collect, which reviewers notice as a blocked pump rather than as a calendar date. Clean mechanical media as it clogs. Leave the biological media alone. Net the loosened weed afterwards. The Cloverleaf bullets say the pump can stay on, though some reviewers pause it for about an hour.
Can the UV stay on?
Cloverleaf, Evolution Aqua’s natural powder, and NT Labs say theirs can stay on. Do not copy a different brand’s leaflet that tells you to switch a UV off. The envii formula line mentions a UV light filter and is not an instruction to disable your clarifier. If your label is silent, leave the unit as it was.
The fish are at the surface. Do I add a second dose?
Gasping fish need air, not a heavier pour. Aerate, and stop if they do not settle. NT Labs bars a dose at daybreak, in hot or thundery weather, and within three hours of feeding. A second chemical the same day does not cancel the first. Get advice if ammonia is high.
What is different if the bottle is the envii liquid?
It is a liquid for submerged algae, at 50 ml per 1,000 litres, in the morning, with a repeat after seven days. A floating mat is a different envii product. The bullets aim for three weeks and also print a 20,000 litre field that clashes with 10,000 litres. Copper sulfate is on the ingredient line. One review reports newt deaths.
