Fountain pump or filter pump

Updated: 22 October 2026

One amazon.co.uk title can say fountain, pond and aquarium, and you are about to use it for whichever job is in front of you. A fountain pump and a filter pump fail in opposite ways. The fine cage keeps the jet clear and starves the filter. The solids pump feeds the filter and breaks a fountain pattern, and on a wildlife pond it can pull animals in. The intake and nozzle columns are on the [pond pump comparison](/hub/garden-ponds/pond-pump). Peter F. used saved amazon.co.uk listings as of 21 October 2026. This is not a lab test. Two intakes, two failures

A filter pump has large openings so soft waste reaches the media. A fountain pump uses a fine strainer, and that is where blanket weed stops. Water Garden’s result of the wrong pump is a clean filter and a green pond, because nothing arrived. Bradshaws adds the practical cost: you rinse a fine cage often, and you should not leave it as the only pump while you are away. A solids pump on a fountain will not hold a bell or a goblet, and the large tails are the wrong fitting. Swell UK separates solids pumps, fountain pumps and feature pumps, and says you run two when you want a filter and a display. All-in-one boxes are not this category. The buying order is the pond pump buying guide.

What this set actually states

Only the PondXpert Mighty Mite 2000 states a particle size: up to 4 mm on the 2,000 L/h model, and 2 mm on a 1,000 L/h version in the same bullets, with 20–32 mm tails. It is not an 8 mm cage. Power is 0.05 horsepower only, reviews say there is no plug, and the star line is 4.5 from 290. The 4 mm figure is the filter feed, and the wrong intake where small animals use the pond. Pontec PondoVario 1500 names Goblet, Volcano, Bell and Jets, plus an extra-fine filter, at 1,500 L/h and 25 W. Head is not stated. Reviews describe slits blocked with weed, and one buyer was told it is not for a filter box. Everyone else lacks a solids size, so fountain is an inference from nozzles. The Knifel 2500 L/h, the top pick, includes a hose and three nozzles. The flintronic, the best value, includes two nozzles. AQQA includes three nozzles and reviews say there is no sponge. HOCANFLO’s title says there is no nozzle. POPOSOAP has a filter housing, and a natural-pond review says that housing blocks. A blank cell is not a millimetre rating.

Wildlife ponds and a pump you can skip

The RHS says a wildlife pond does not need a filter. If you still want movement, guard the intake so tadpoles are not sucked in. The note gives no millimetre size. The only stated solids size points the other way. A Mighty Mite review describes newts pulled in, and another buyer used a pond sack because of tadpoles. Guarding a 4 mm intake until it behaves like a fine screen undoes the solids handling you bought. Skip the pump rather than invent a cage. A fine fountain pump is not a kinder substitute: it clogs, and a pet-fountain review sample does not answer a tadpole question.

When you want both

If the pond has fish, a filter and a jet, use two pumps. Leave the solids pump running and switch the fountain off when you are away, so a blocked cage does not stop the filter. A small pond is where one pump is asked to do both, and where the clogging reviews show up first. Turnover is on what size pond pump do I need. Spill width is on pond waterfall pump. Pontec on the filter and Mighty Mite on the fountain is the wrong way round. Neither listing says it can be both. HOCANFLO’s inlet screen, with no particle size and no nozzle, is not a fountain set. A fish-safe bullet or a 35–40 dB line is a listing claim, not a measurement, and 24 V does not change the intake or let the mains converter get wet.

Common questions

Why does a fountain pump block when it feeds a filter?
The strainer is fine on purpose, so the nozzle stays clear. Blanket weed and soft waste stop on that screen instead of travelling to the filter. The filter then stays oddly clean while the pond deteriorates, which is the failure Water Garden describes. Bradshaws adds the practical cost: you are cleaning the cage often, and it is a poor pump to leave running while you are away.
Why does a solids pump wreck a fountain jet?
A fountain pattern needs clean water and a small nozzle. A pump that passes debris up to 4 mm, with tails at 20–32 mm, is built to move waste, not to hold a bell or a goblet. The jet breaks up, and the fittings do not match. In this set that description is the Mighty Mite, not the Pontec nozzle set.
Which listing in this set states a particle size?
Only the PondXpert Mighty Mite 2000. It states up to 4 mm solids on the 2,000 L/h model and 2 mm on the 1,000 L/h version in the same bullets, with 20–32 mm tails. Pontec states an extra-fine filter and four nozzle names, not a millimetre opening. The other listings either ship nozzles or say nothing. Do not read a blank cell as 8 mm.
What is a feature pump doing in a garden pond?
A feature pump is the small end of the fountain family: nozzles, a short lift, often a flow knob, and no stated solids size. The flintronic at 800 L/h and 16 W, and the Knifel 1500, are that group. They suit a bowl, a statue or a tiny jet. They are a weak filter feed because the intake is not described as solids-handling, and the flintronic’s saved reviews are mostly pet fountains and tanks.
Do I need a pump at all on a wildlife pond?
Often no. The RHS says a wildlife pond does not need a filter. If you add a pump for movement, protect the intake so tadpoles are not drawn in. The only stated solids size here is 4 mm on the Mighty Mite, and a review describes newts pulled in. That is a reason to leave the pump out, not a reason to build a cage from this page.
What if I want a fountain and a filter?
Use two pumps if you can. Leave the solids-handling pump on the filter, and use a fountain pump you can switch off. In this set that is the Mighty Mite on the filter, with the limits above, and the Pontec on the jet, with no stated head and a plug to fit. One small nozzle pump doing both is the compromise that clogs. It is not a fix for a filter that must see the waste.
What must I not claim about fish-safe or quiet bullets?
Do not claim they were tested. A bullet that says fish-safe, or a 35–40 dB line on the POPOSOAP page, is a claim in the listing, not a measurement in these files. Do not claim that 24 V removes shock risk. The converter is still a mains appliance and it stays dry. Do not invent a particle size for a pump that only shipped nozzles.
