How to use a pond sludge remover

Updated: 22 October 2026

The bottle is already in your hand, and the back label does not match the one you saw on a forum. How to use a pond sludge remover starts with the label you bought, not with a dose borrowed from another brand. The [pond sludge remover comparison](/hub/garden-ponds/pond-sludge-remover) is the table if you have not chosen yet. This page is the sequence after that choice: volume, oxygen, then UV only where it is printed. Peter F. used the stored amazon.co.uk listings. It is not a lab test. A qualifying purchase can earn us a commission at no extra cost to you. There is no shared schedule across these brands.

Before anything goes in the water

Work out litres before you open the cap. Length times width times average depth, in metres, times 1,000, is the box. Take some off for a kidney, a shelf or a planted margin. Blagdon’s bullets say 250 ml treats 2,273 litres. ARKA’s table steps at 1,000 litres and above. A gel ball has no litre line on the stored amazon bullets. Evolution Aqua’s own page says up to 20,000 litres. If the bullets state nothing, the sketch tells you that you are guessing. Digestion uses oxygen. Keep the air pump or the waterfall running. Swell UK’s point still holds: bacteria do not replace a filter. If fish are gasping at the surface, stop and do not dose. Check ammonia and nitrite, add aeration, and change water without sending it into a ditch or a drain. When someone competent should take over is on the sludge remover for a koi pond page. One Blagdon reviewer switches the pump off for seven days. That is their method, not the bullets.

UV, temperature, and the last algaecide

Switch the UV clarifier off only when the label says so. ARKA prints off for at least 24 hours after each dose, a start from 7 °C, and a 72-hour wait after pesticides or algicides. A 48-hour line from another brand is not in the stored bullets for Blagdon, Cloverleaf, API or the Evolution Aqua balls. ARKA’s 7 °C is not Kusuri’s best-above-15 °C, and neither belongs on Cloverleaf, which says through the year and prints no degrees. Blagdon names the warm months. A duo reviewer waits for 12 °C, and that wait is not in the duo bullets. Evolution Aqua’s own Sludge Bomb page says the ball works faster in warmer water, with pH above 7 and chlorine at 0. If the bottle is silent, silence is the instruction. Those gaps are set out in the pond sludge remover buying guide.

Liquid dose or a gel ball

Read the calendar on the bottle you opened. Ecofix on amazon.co.uk says twice a week for two weeks, then every other week. API’s own UK page adds 60 ml per 946 litres, then 30 ml. Those 946 litres are a US 250-gallon step. Pond-Zyme says twice a week for two weeks, then every two weeks, while the title, the 227 g table and the granule reviews disagree. Do not average the two API wordings, and do not double a liquid in week one. Blagdon says to use the 250 ml bottle through the warm months. It gives 2,273 litres and a measuring chamber, not millilitres per litre. One reviewer spreads a dose in a watering can of pond water. Cloverleaf’s 1 litre says through the year, as a follow-up to Blanket Answer, and prints no millilitres per litre. The Sludge Bomb is the drop-in: into the pond or the filter, and you cannot overdose that ball. A couple of days, a couple of weeks, or no visible change all appear. The listing does not describe cutting the duo in half.

Cloud, a blocked pump, and when to stop

A pea-soup cloud about two days after a Sludge Bomb is a pattern in the UK reviews. Envii’s notes, for a different product, say disturbed sludge can cloud the water and load a filter within a few days. That describes these reviews. It is not a promise your pond will clear. Blagdon and Cloverleaf reviews both describe the pump filling with material that has moved. Clean the media. Do not add more liquid the same afternoon. ARKA is still on day 8, 15, 22 and 29, so day two is early. Blagdon reviews run from a few days to about three weeks. A September Sludge Bomb was still a slow job at the end of October. A whole Ecofix bottle with no change is in the file. No result on a layer that was thick to start with is a reason to stop and remove solids, not to start a second brand the same day. Stop and get help when fish are gasping, when ammonia or nitrite will not fall, or when the waste might reach a ditch, stream or surface-water drain.

Common questions

How do I work out litres before I pour?
Multiply length, width and average depth in metres, then multiply by 1,000. Take some off for a kidney, a shelf or a planted edge. Blagdon states 2,273 litres for the 250 ml bottle. ARKA states steps from 1,000 litres and up to 29,950 litres across the schedule. If the bullets state nothing, the sketch tells you that you are guessing.
Do I turn the UV off for every brand?
No. Only ARKA’s stored listing says to switch the UV clarifier off for at least 24 hours after each dose. Blagdon, Cloverleaf, both API bottles and the Evolution Aqua bullets saved here do not print that hour. A 48-hour rule from another brand is not your label.
Why is the water cloudier, or pea soup, after a dose?
UK Sludge Bomb reviews describe a thick pea-soup cloud about two days after the drop, then clearer water in some ponds and no real change in others. Blagdon and Cloverleaf reviews describe solids moving into the filter. Cloud is not proof the dose is working, and it is not a reason to pour a second measure the same day.
The pump has blocked. Do I add more?
Clean the pump and the filter. The blockage in these reviews is loosened sludge or dead blanketweed moving. Adding more liquid while the flow is stopped does not finish the job. Do not switch the pump off for a week because one Blagdon review does that. Keep aeration running. These labels do not tell you to stop it.
How long should I wait before I decide it failed?
Use the schedule on your bottle. ARKA is still dosing on days 8, 15, 22 and 29, so day three is early. Blagdon reviews run from a few days to about three weeks. A whole bottle with no change, on Ecofix or after one or two litres of Cloverleaf, is a fair point to ask whether the layer was too thick.
Can I use a US-gallon mark on an API tub as a UK gallon?
No. API’s Ecofix chart uses 60 ml per 946 litres, and 946 litres is 250 US gallons. A UK gallon is about 4.5 litres. One Pond-Zyme review counts 4 teaspoons per 757 litres, another US step. If the listing gives litres, use litres. If it only says gallons, do not guess which gallon.
What if fish are already at the surface?
Do not add the sludge treatment. Fish at the surface are an oxygen problem, and digestion uses oxygen rather than fixing a crisis. Aerate, test ammonia and nitrite, and do a water change you can dispose of legally. Call someone competent when the readings will not fall.
