Best pond heater: which of these four listings fits

Updated: 22 October 2026

The four pond heaters on our [pond heater comparison](/hub/garden-ponds/pond-heater) sit between 4.0 and 4.2 stars on amazon.co.uk, so the best pond heater is not obvious from the star line. That band hides a 308-review UK file beside listings with no UK review in what we read. Prices on 20 October 2026 ran from £32.92 to £44.57. Peter F. did not laboratory-test any unit. Same stars, different evidence

The Blagdon Affinity Ice Vent, B006IRMVVK, is £40.95, 50 W, and 4.2 from 308 reviews, ranked 3 in Pond De-Icer. The file contains 50 UK reviews: a small ice-free patch, a missing plug, no indicator, failures the next winter, and holes that closed in a hard frost. The VIHOSE 1,000 W tube, B0FNMWNQB9, is also 4.2, from six United States reviews, at £36.00. The 500 W tube, B0FNMRSGSL, is £32.92 and 4.1 from four reviews, ranked 384 in Aquarium Heaters. One says it never shut off. The MYSTUD float, B0FN2LK3G1, is £44.57 and 4.0 from 28 reviews, also with United States texts, including a 120 V outlet.

For a hole in a fish pond up to 5,000 litres

If you keep goldfish or koi and you want a hole, the Blagdon listing matches the job and the review country. It is a 50 W convection chamber, model 1051545, for ponds up to 5,000 litres, with a 5 m cable and no plug. Retailers add 10 m, 230 V and IPX8. Those lines are not on the amazon card. The polystyrene disc is the float. UK reviews say people nearly binned it as packaging, and there is no lamp. Failures the next winter limit what 308 reviews promise for a second season. If you want warmer water than a hole, skip it. Placement is on the how to use page.

For a set temperature in a small tub

The two VIHOSE listings are stainless tubes with a rotary knob and a dry-burn line: the steel must be fully immersed. Both claim a 3-pin plug. Neither states voltage or cable length. The 1,000 W model is listed for about 120–150 gallons. The 500 W model is listed for about 60–80 gallons and was first available on 4 November 2025. Unplug and wait 10–20 minutes before you lift either out. They suit a small volume if you accept American reviews. On the Ofgem cap of 26.32 pence per kWh for 1 October to 31 December 2026, a Direct Debit default tariff in England, Scotland and Wales, 1,000 W left on all day is about £6.32. That rate is not your bill and does not apply in Northern Ireland. Most UK fish ponds should skip both tubes.

For a thermostatic float, only with the gaps in view

The MYSTUD PD-002 is the floating 500 W de-icer. A 1,000 W option in the title is not this file. No degrees, voltage, cable length or plug are printed. The bullets say it is safe for liners, fish and plants. That is a claim, and the file has no test report. On-topic US reviews describe an open patch. One unit did not heat on a 120 V outlet. The listing never states 230 V, so do not assume a British socket. At £44.57 it is the dearest card in the set.

What this page will not call a winner

Nothing here won a published test. Ranks of 3, 6 and 8 in Pond De-Icer, and 384 in Aquarium Heaters, are positions on the day we saved the files. For a goldfish pond that needs a hole on an RCD-protected socket, the Blagdon listing is the one with UK reviews. Skip it for a set temperature, a lamp, or a moulded 13 A plug. Skip the 500 W VIHOSE if you came for a de-icer, the 1,000 W VIHOSE if six American reviews are not enough, and the MYSTUD if the voltage is unstated. Frogs and newts with almost no fish may mean you buy nothing.

Common questions

Which of these four should I buy for a goldfish pond?
For an open patch, the Blagdon Affinity Ice Vent is the listing that states that job, up to 5,000 litres, and the only one with UK review texts in our file. You still need an RCD-protected outdoor socket. Depth and a pause in feeding in deep winter still matter. A heater does not replace them, and it will not make the water warm.
Is the Blagdon worth more than the cheaper VIHOSE because of the reviews?
The Blagdon is £40.95 and the 500 W VIHOSE is £32.92, a gap of about £8. One file has 308 reviews and 50 UK texts. The other has four United States reviews, and one says the unit never shut off. That £8 buys UK review text for a vent. A 60–80 gallon tub, with the thermostat watched, is a different purchase.
Why is the 500 W VIHOSE ranked with aquarium heaters?
The title says outdoor pond heater. The Best Sellers Rank on the file is 197,074 in Pet Supplies and 384 in Aquarium Heaters. It does not say Pond De-Icer. The other three listings do, at 3, 6 and 8. Rank is where Amazon filed the page, not a certificate that the steel tube is a garden de-icer.
Can I trust the 4.2 on the 1,000 W unit?
You can trust 4.2 as the average of six amazon.co.uk reviews. You cannot treat it as the same fact as 4.2 from 308. The texts we have are in the United States, one missed a 75°F set point by about 10°F, and none describes a UK winter. The listing claims a 3-pin plug and does not state a voltage.
Is the floating de-icer a UK 230 V product?
The MYSTUD listing does not say. Voltage, plug and cable length are absent, and no degrees are printed on the claimed thermostat. One review records a 120 V outlet and a unit that did not heat. UK mains are 230 V. Do not infer the supply from a rank of 8 in Pond De-Icer or from a price in pounds.
