Common questions about fire protection

What is the difference between a smoke alarm and a heat detector?
A smoke alarm senses smoke and sounds a local warning. On amazon.co.uk the usual buy is a battery optical unit for a hall or landing. A heat detector warns by temperature, so it can sit in a kitchen or garage where cooking fumes set a smoke alarm off. It responds later than a smoke alarm, so it does not replace one in a hall or a living room. The heat detector comparison has nine listings, from about £8.99 to about £32.91. These pages were not lab-tested.
Does a CO2 detector replace a carbon monoxide alarm?
A CO2 detector shows carbon dioxide in parts per million so you can judge how well a room is ventilated. It does not detect carbon monoxide. That gas is a combustion poison and needs an alarm to BS EN 50291, which is a different product. The CO detector comparison covers 12 amazon.co.uk listings, from about £3.42 to about £25.98. The CO2 comparison keeps three meters. The top pick is the listing that names NDIR. The about £16.99 listing is electrochemical.
What smoke alarms do landlords have to fit?
England’s landlord rules ask for one smoke alarm on each living storey and do not require interlink. English landlords may use a battery alarm for that duty. Scotland expects every home to have ceiling-mounted interlinked smoke alarms in the living room and halls, plus a kitchen heat alarm. Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland ask for more than the English minimum. A phone alert is not a siren on another floor. The buying pages under smoke alarm and wireless smoke alarm set those checks in order.
Does a UK home have to keep a fire extinguisher?
A private UK home is not forced to keep a fire extinguisher. Article 6 of the Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005 excludes ordinary domestic premises. A workplace, or the common parts of flats, is a different duty. Match the label’s fire class to the fuel. GOV.UK says you might use an extinguisher only on a very small fire, or if it blocks your exit, and only if you will not put yourself in danger. Get out, stay out, and call 999.
When is a fire blanket the right buy, and when is Class F?
A fire blanket is a woven glass-fibre sheet you pull over a small fire. GOV.UK says keep one in the kitchen if you buy one, and also says not to tackle a pan fire, never to use water, and to get out and call 999. A grease fire extinguisher is for Class F fires in cooking oils and fats. You tell a serious listing by an F number such as 25F, not by the word kitchen on an ABC powder unit. The blanket comparison has eleven amazon.co.uk listings.
What is a smoke alarm magnet?
A smoke alarm magnet is a pair of self-adhesive metal plates with a magnet between them, so you can hang a battery alarm without screws and slide it off later. The four amazon.co.uk products on that page are plates only. None is a smoke alarm, and none meets BS EN 14604, which applies to the alarm. Measure the flat back of an alarm you already own, and check that the ceiling is smooth, sound, and dust-free. Prices run from about £5.99 to about £11.99.
Does a smart smoke alarm’s phone alert meet UK rules?
A smart home smoke alarm is a smoke alarm that can also send a phone alert. The sounder in the home is still the safety device. An app does not meet the smoke-alarm duties in England, Scotland, Wales, or Northern Ireland on its own. A mains base station plus radio-linked battery alarms can still sound together if the hub loses the internet. A single Wi-Fi alarm may not interconnect with the others. Nine amazon.co.uk listings run from about £19.99 to about £79.99. No lab test was run.
What should you check before buying a gas detector?
You can smell a gas leak only if the odourant reaches you. On amazon.co.uk the gas detector name covers battery sniffers, plug-in and corded alarms, one handheld that states combustible gas and carbon monoxide, and one oxygen monitor. Natural gas rises. LPG vapour sinks. A detector can warn you. It does not stop a leak, and it does not replace 0800 111 999 or a Gas Safe registered engineer. Sixteen listings run from about £13.99 to about £79.99.
