10 year sealed smoke alarm

Updated: October 2026

The chirp starts at 2am and the 9 V cell you meant to replace is still in a drawer. That is what a 10 year sealed smoke alarm is meant to close. GOV.UK calls ten-year sealed batteries the best option for most people, because one-year cells are forgotten, and you replace the alarm as a whole. Prices are amazon.co.uk listings from 19 October 2026. A qualifying purchase can earn a commission at no extra cost to you. Why official advice prefers a sealed cell

Fire Kills tells you to replace a loose battery at once when you hear a regular chirp, and to replace the whole alarm when the cell is sealed. The National Fire Chiefs Council asks for a sealed compartment, a ten-year life, and replacement at ten years or at the replace-by date, sooner if the alarm is contaminated. People take the battery out. The alarm looks fitted and does nothing. A sealed cell removes that mistake. When it dies, you buy another alarm. The clear sealed listings here are the X-Sense SD11 at about £11.99, the FireAngel FA6620 one-pack at about £11.98, the FireAngel twin at about £25.00, and the ELRO FS4610 at about £21.99, which states a ten-year warranty. The WISUALARM DHI-HY-SA20A at about £8.94 says sealed and also lists a battery among the included parts, so do not treat that page as settled until you see the hardware.

Three different ten-year sentences

Read the title, then the battery line, then the warranty. A sealed lithium sentence is the FireAngel and X-Sense pattern. The cell is built in, the listing says ten years, and the warranty on those pages is five years. A hush pause is not a new cell. A ten-year sensor with a shorter cell is the second sentence. The WISUALARM S01 puts a 10-year lifespan next to a 5-year battery and two AA cells. The TEFLERON title pairs ten years with a five-year replaceable battery, while a spec line also says the battery average life is ten years. The BLACK+DECKER title says 10 Year Life and the spec says the 9 V cell averages one year. The third sentence is the ELRO FS1801 four-pack at about £31.15: ten-year protection, and a battery that lasts one year and is replaceable. If you can replace the battery, it is not sealed.

What the reviews show, and what they do not

This is not a failure rate. Sales are not set against the number that died, so a percentage would be an invention. Ten years is the replace-by horizon. On the X-Sense SD11, reviews report the sealed cell dead at about two years, about two and a half years, and about four years. One replace-by date on arrival was two or three months short of ten years. On the FireAngel one-pack, reviews cite about four years, about three years, and under three years. On the twin, both units in a July 2024 pair failed after about two years and two months. The cell is described as spot-welded. You replace the alarm. FireAngel and X-Sense state five years of warranty. The ELRO FS4610 states ten, at about £21.99, and only seven of the first 50 reviews in the file are from the United Kingdom.

Chirps, and the Scottish route

A regular chirp on a sealed alarm means replace the alarm. Fire Kills says a hush can silence it briefly while the alarm should still react to smoke. Do not break the case open. That can void the warranty. Replaceable batteries are legal to sell. They are the wrong product for a Scottish home meeting the tolerable standard, which wants sealed long-life lithium or mains fitted by an electrician. Scotland also wants interlink and a kitchen heat alarm, which no standalone disc here provides. The map is the landlord smoke alarm regulations page. For an existing English landing, the sealed FireAngel or X-Sense near £12 matches the official preference.

Common questions

Is a sealed ten-year battery worth more than a £7 9 V alarm?
It is worth it if you will forget to change a 9 V cell, which is the failure GOV.UK is writing about. The sealed FireAngel and X-Sense alarms are about £12, against STATUS at about £6.97. A rule of thumb says the sealed unit can be cheaper over ten years if it lasts. UK reviews show some sealed cells dying at two to four years, so the saving is conditional. You are paying to remove the empty-battery mistake, not to buy a guaranteed decade.
What does 10-year protection mean on the ELRO four-pack?
On the ELRO FS1801 at about £31.15 it means a one-year replaceable battery, identified in reviews as a 9 V cell, inside an alarm the listing talks about as ten years of protection if you keep replacing that cell. It is not a sealed lithium alarm. Packs in the review file false-alarmed after about a year even with new batteries, so a fresh cell does not cure every fault.
My sealed alarm chirps after two years. Can I change the cell?
No. On the FireAngel and X-Sense units the cell is not a user part, and a FireAngel review describes it as spot-welded. Replace the alarm. A hush control may stop the chirp for a few hours, and the alarm should still sound for smoke. FireAngel describes up to eight hours for low-battery chirps. Opening the case is a way to void the warranty, not a repair.
Is the warranty ten years if the battery claim is ten years?
Not on the FireAngel and X-Sense listings in this set. Both state a five-year warranty beside a ten-year cell. The ELRO FS4610 does state a ten-year warranty, at about £21.99, and its UK written sample in the saved listing is small. Match the warranty line on the page you buy, not the largest number in the title.
When do I replace a sealed unit that still tests?
Replace it by the date printed on the alarm, or at about ten years, whichever comes first, and sooner if it has been contaminated. A test beep only shows the sounder still works. It does not reset the age of the sensor. If it chirps, or it false-alarms and will not reset, replace it earlier even if the printed date is years away.
