Smoke alarm buying guide

Updated: October 2026

You are standing in a hallway with a dead alarm, or you have just collected the keys to a flat, and the amazon.co.uk titles are already arguing. One disc says kitchen, another says ten years, a third mentions a caravan. A smoke alarm buying guide only helps if it puts those words in order before a brand name appears. Twelve battery listings were compared on amazon.co.uk on 19 October 2026, from the prices and review counts on those pages, with no lab test. A qualifying purchase can earn a commission at no extra cost to you. The ranked table is the [smoke alarm comparison](/hub/fire-protection/smoke-alarm). This page stops at the type: room, sensor, power and mark.

Start with the room, not the brand

Start with where you live and whether you rent, own, or are fitting a new house. A battery disc that is reasonable in an existing English house can be the wrong product in Glasgow or in a Welsh rented flat. A hall, a landing and a living room are circulation spaces. GOV.UK puts at least one alarm on every level, in the middle of the ceiling, on the hall and the landing, and not in or near a kitchen or a bathroom. London Fire Brigade’s kitchen tool is a heat alarm. Steam and grill fumes trip a smoke sensor. The TEFLERON title names a kitchen at about £12.74, and the STATUS title names a kitchen as well. FireAngel’s bullets say avoid bathrooms and kitchens. If the room is a kitchen, look for a heat alarm marked to BS 5446-2.

Optical sensing for circulation spaces

Photoelectric and optical are the same idea: a light beam in a chamber, scattered when smoke drifts in. That is the sensor expected in living areas. Ionisation alarms used to false-alarm on burnt toast. For a hallway they are a poor default. Eleven of the twelve listings state a photoelectric sensor. The exception is the XUK PA-437EN at about £21.99, which claims photoelectric and ionisation together and a link to Tuya or Smart Life, and does not name BS EN 14604. A phone alert is not two alarms sounding together. The X-Sense SD11 manual says that model is not tested for caravans and does not detect flames, heat or carbon monoxide.

Sealed, replaceable or mains

GOV.UK prefers a ten-year sealed battery because a one-year cell is the one people forget. In this set the sealed one-packs near £12 are the FireAngel FA6620 at about £11.98 and the X-Sense SD11 at about £11.99. The ELRO FS4610 is sealed at about £21.99, with a ten-year warranty stated. The warranty on the FireAngel and X-Sense pages is five years, not ten. Replaceable cells are the other route: STATUS and BLACK+DECKER at about £6.97 and about £6.99, both 9 V, and the ELRO FS1801 four-pack at about £31.15, which says ten-year protection and then says the battery lasts one year. None of these twelve listings is a mains alarm. If the address is a new English dwelling, a Scottish home, a Welsh rented flat or a Northern Ireland private tenancy, read the landlord smoke alarm regulations next.

Marks and the ten-year wording

BS EN 14604 is the standard these boxes point at. A bullet is the manufacturer’s claim, not a test repeated here, and not a Kitemark unless the listing says so. FireAngel’s one-pack names BS EN 14604:2005+AC:2008 and UKCA. Heiman’s mini at about £15.99 also names LPCB. The STATUS page does not name the standard. FireAngel’s own site lists the FA6620-R around £19 to £34. The amazon.co.uk one-pack is about £11.98. Use the figure on the page you buy. If the battery line and the warranty disagree, it is not a ten-year object yet.

Put the four checks in order

Decide the nation and the tenure first, then the room, then the sensor, then the power, then the mark. A hall in an existing English house can use a photoelectric battery alarm. A kitchen needs a heat alarm. When those checks agree, the short list names who each listing is for. It does not add a model from outside these twelve pages.

Common questions

Do I need a smoke alarm in the kitchen?
You need a heat alarm in the kitchen, not a smoke alarm. GOV.UK and London Fire Brigade both keep smoke alarms out of kitchens and bathrooms because steam sets them off. A title that mentions a kitchen, including the TEFLERON and STATUS pages here, does not change that. Scottish guidance points heat alarms at BS 5446-2:2003. A Nest Protect is treated in that guidance as not meeting the heat-alarm standard.
What does BS EN 14604 mean on the box?
It is the British and European smoke-alarm standard these optical alarms claim to meet. The claim is the seller’s, not a lab result from this comparison. FireAngel prints BS EN 14604 and UKCA on the one-pack. STATUS does not print the standard. Heiman also names LPCB. Do not assume a Kitemark unless the listing uses that word.
Can I use a battery alarm in a new-build house?
Not as the Building Regulations minimum for a new dwellinghouse in England. Approved Document B’s FAQ describes Grade D2, Category LD3: mains alarms with a standby supply, to BS EN 14604, in the circulation spaces. A battery disc can still be an extra. It does not replace that mains system, and it does not satisfy a Welsh rented mains minimum either.
Will a Wi-Fi alarm replace interlinked sounders?
No. The XUK unit sends an alert to a phone through Tuya or Smart Life. Scottish guidance says interlink between alarms is by radio or by wiring, not by Wi-Fi. If one alarm must wake the whole house by sounding the others, you need a linked system, which none of these twelve listings provides.
What should I ignore in an amazon.co.uk title?
Ignore a room the listing is not suitable for, a ten-year phrase that sits next to a one-year cell, and a price on the manufacturer’s own shop if you are buying the amazon.co.uk listing. The FireAngel site’s £19 to £34 band is not the about £11.98 one-pack in this set. Read the battery line, the standard line and the avoid-kitchens line before you add it to the basket.
