Best smoke alarm for a hall or landing

Updated: October 2026

You want one or two battery alarms for a hall or a landing in a house that is already standing in England, and you want the choice narrowed before you open twelve amazon.co.uk pages. Best smoke alarm on this page means a sealed optical alarm, a stated BS EN 14604 line, screws in the box, and a shelf price near £12, judged only inside the listings from 19 October 2026. Prices, stars and review texts come from those pages. There is no lab test, and a qualifying purchase can earn a commission at no extra cost to you. The full table, including the packs this page tells you to skip, is the [smoke alarm comparison](/hub/fire-protection/smoke-alarm).

What best means in this set

A star average is a record of what buyers typed after fitting, not a fire test. The FireAngel FA6620 one-pack is 4.3 from 8,044 reviews and the X-Sense SD11 is 4.5 from 7,170. The TEFLERON two-pack is 4.6 from 1,228, and it is not the pick: the title mixes a ten-year life with a five-year replaceable battery and names a kitchen. The criterion is four checks. Photoelectric sensing, a sealed cell, a BS EN 14604 line, and screws rather than adhesive pads. The prices that meet all four, on 19 October 2026, are about £11.98 and about £11.99. GOV.UK prefers ten-year sealed batteries because one-year cells are forgotten. Both listings still carry a five-year warranty.

FireAngel FA6620 one-pack and X-Sense SD11

The FireAngel FA6620 one-pack, model FA6620-R, was number 1 in Smoke Alarms on that amazon.co.uk listing. It names BS EN 14604:2005+AC:2008 and UKCA, a quiet self-test, and a baseplate the bullets say matches the older ST622. One buyer says it did not fit an ST-620, so an old plate is a check. Keep it out of kitchens and bathrooms. FireAngel’s own website lists this model around £19 to £34 and states 85 dB. Do not import that price. This one-pack is about £11.98 and does not state decibels. The X-Sense SD11 is about £11.99, with 85 dB stated and EN 14604. UKCA is not on the page. The box includes a bracket, two screws and two plugs. A test press of four to five seconds made some buyers think the unit was dead. The manual says it is not tested for caravans and does not detect heat, flame or carbon monoxide.

When a cheaper listing is the better buy

The STATUS 9VDCPESA5 is about £6.97 with 4.4 from 1,231 reviews, the lowest shelf price in the set, and the best value pick on that price and that review count. The listing does not name BS EN 14604 or UKCA. Buy it only if you will keep spare 9 V batteries. The BLACK+DECKER at about £6.99 prints BS EN 14604 and UKCA, but the title says ten-year life and the spec says the 9 V cell averages one year. There are 78 reviews. The ELRO FS1801 four-pack is about £31.15, and its ten-year protection line means a one-year cell you replace. Those words are pulled apart on the 10 year sealed smoke alarm page.

Who should leave this short list

This short list is for an existing English home that can still use a standalone battery alarm. A new English dwellinghouse is held to Approved Document B’s Grade D2, Category LD3 minimum: mains smoke alarms with a standby supply, to BS EN 14604. Many Welsh rented homes need the required alarms on the mains and linked to each other. Kitchens need a heat alarm. None of these twelve listings is mains or radio-linked.

Which listing to take home

For a landing in an existing English home, take the FireAngel one-pack if you want the UKCA line, the quiet test and the largest review file. Take the X-Sense if you want the stated 85 dB at the same money, knowing the manual excludes caravans. Take the STATUS only if you will replace the 9 V cell and a standalone battery alarm is allowed.

Common questions

Is the FireAngel two-pack better value than two one-packs?
Not on these 19 October 2026 prices. The twin, FA6620-R-T2, is about £25.00 and two one-packs at about £11.98 come to £23.96. The twin is the same FA6620 family, still not interlinked, with 4.3 from 4,864 reviews. UK reviews include a July 2024 pair that both failed after about two years and two months. Buy the twin when it is actually cheaper on the day, or when you want one delivery of two.
Is the £6.97 STATUS alarm good enough?
It is the cheapest listing here, with 1,231 reviews, and it is the best value pick on price. The page does not name BS EN 14604. Reviewers report 9 V cells dying inside a year, including four of five units within about seven months, and a flat battery in the box. It is good enough only if you will replace that cell.
Why not the Wi-Fi alarm as the best?
The XUK alarm is about £21.99 with 13 reviews, a replaceable cell, and no BS EN 14604 line on the listing. It notifies a phone through Tuya or Smart Life. It does not make other alarms in the house sound. That can be useful in a garage if you already use that app. It is not the best smoke alarm for a landing under the four checks on this page.
What if I am in Scotland?
Do not use this short list as your system. Scottish homes need interlinked smoke alarms in the living room and circulation spaces, a heat alarm in the kitchen, and either sealed lithium or mains. A standalone disc, and any 9 V or AA alarm you can open, fails that route. One FireAngel on the landing does not finish the job.
Does a high star rating mean the battery lasts ten years?
No. The TEFLERON pack is 4.6 from 1,228 reviews and its title disagrees with itself about five years and ten. FireAngel is 4.3 from 8,044 and still has reviews of sealed cells failing at about two to four years. Stars record fitting, noise and nuisance alarms. The replace-by date on the unit, and a cell you cannot remove, are the battery facts. The stars are not.
