Smoke alarm without flashing light: what to check

Updated: 21 October 2026

You have a tab open on amazon.co.uk because a red blink on the landing keeps you awake. The results mix bestsellers that still pulse with cheaper alarms that never say what the LED does. A smoke alarm without a flashing light is one whose listing states that the standby LED stays dark, or that you can switch that pulse off while detection stays on. A light during an alarm, a fault, or end of life is still allowed. Prices sit on the [smoke alarm without flashing light comparison](/hub/fire-protection/smoke-alarm-without-flashing-light). What the listing must say about the light

A quiet standby is a sentence on the listing, not a guess from a white plastic cover. In this set only two listings state the behaviour. The X-Sense XS0G-SN says there is no standby flash, at about £10.91. That bullet still allows a light for an alarm, a low battery, a fault, or end of life. The X-Sense XS0B-SN, at about £16.99 and 4.8 from 60 reviews, turns the standby flash on or off with a double press while detection stays on. Named picks are on the best smoke alarm without a flashing light page.

When the listing never mentions the LED

Everything else in this set leaves the standby line blank. The FireAngel FA6620, model FA6620-R, is rank 1 in Smoke Alarms at about £11.98 with 4.3 from 8,044 reviews. FireAngel’s page says a red flash about every 40 seconds means that model is working. The amazon listing does not print that interval, so silence is not a dark-standby promise. The WISUALARM S05-A, the S01, the twin-pack, and the Ruan 4-pack do not state standby either.

Battery and the standard line

GOV.UK prefers a sealed battery, because a user-replaceable cell is easy to pull out and forget. The XS0G-SN uses a sealed CR123A with a claimed 10-year life. The FireAngel and the WISUALARM S05-A, about £11.99, make the same style of claim. Lincolnshire County Council says look for BS EN 14604:2005 and a UKCA or CE mark. The FireAngel bullet cites BS EN 14604:2005+AC:2008. The Ruan 4-pack title says EN14064, which is not that standard; the bullets then say EN 14604. A standard mark does not tell you whether the LED blinks.

England, Wales and Scotland are not the same duty

In England a private landlord must fit at least one smoke alarm on each storey, repair it once told it is faulty, and can face a fine of up to £5,000. It is not enough for a new dwelling under Approved Document B, which asks for Grade D2 Category LD3 mains alarms. Wales requires linked mains alarms on each storey of rented homes in scope. Scotland’s tolerable standard wants interlinked alarms in the living room and halls, plus a kitchen heat alarm, on sealed lithium or mains, in every home. Fitting is on the how to fit a smoke alarm page.

Common questions

How do I know the standby light really stays off?
You know only if the listing says so in its own words. In this set the X-Sense XS0G-SN states that there is no standby flash, and a UK review says there is no annoying red light. The XS0B-SN states that a double press turns the standby flash on or off while detection stays on. A blank standby line, including on the FireAngel FA6620 listing, is not evidence that the LED stays dark. FireAngel’s page for the FA6620-R says a red flash about every 40 seconds means the alarm is working.
Should I choose a sealed battery or AA and 9 V cells?
GOV.UK prefers a sealed battery when a battery alarm is the choice, because a loose cell is easy to remove and leave out. The XS0G-SN, the FireAngel, and the WISUALARM S05-A claim a sealed 10-year cell. The S01 uses two replaceable AA cells, and the Ruan pack uses a replaceable 9 V with a 1-year claim under a title that also says 10 years. Scotland does not accept user-replaceable cells for the alarms the tolerable standard requires. Reviews here still report sealed cells dying early.
Will a standalone alarm do for a rental in England?
For a private rented home in England, the duty is at least one smoke alarm on each living storey, repaired once the landlord is told it has failed, with a fine of up to £5,000. The regulations do not name optical versus ionisation, and they do not require the alarms to be linked. A standalone unit can meet that wording. Sealed batteries are recommended. A new-build dwelling is a different case: Approved Document B looks for mains Grade D2 LD3 alarms, which these battery units do not provide alone.
Will the same standalone alarm do in Scotland?
No, not as the required set. Scotland expects interlinked ceiling alarms in the living room and the circulation spaces, plus a heat alarm in the kitchen, on sealed lithium or mains power, in every home. A unit whose listing says no interconnect cannot be that system. You may add a dark-standby alarm in a bedroom, and it remains an extra. Wales, for rented homes in scope, wants mains alarms on each storey and those alarms linked. An English landlord rule does not travel north or west unchanged.
Is the number-one FireAngel a no-flash alarm?
No. The FA6620 is rank 1 in Smoke Alarms on this capture, at about £11.98 with 4.3 from 8,044 reviews, and it has the clearest BS EN 14604 line in the set. FireAngel says a red flash about every 40 seconds on the FA6620-R means the alarm is working. The amazon listing does not print that sentence, which is why shoppers miss it. Buy it if a regular pulse in the hall is acceptable. Skip it for this query if the bedroom has to stay dark.
