Oscillating vs rotating sprinkler

Updated: October 2026

The patio is wet, the far corner is dry, and the head draws the wrong shape. An oscillating vs rotating sprinkler choice is the plot in front of you: a rectangle wants a bar you can limit, and a round bed wants spinning arms. The listings are on the [sprinkler comparison](/hub/fire-protection/sprinkler). Whether you should buy at all is the [garden sprinkler buying guide](/hub/fire-protection/sprinkler/sub/sprinkler-buying-guide). Products Compared did not map a spray. What each pattern actually draws

An oscillating bar sweeps a fan from side to side. With the limiters set, that fan becomes a rectangle or a shorter strip. The bars here are the WASH IT! 48625, the WASH IT! 2573, the Gardena Aqua S, the Kärcher OS 5.320 SV, the YIFKJYLF and the XTDMJ. The XTDMJ style name says Rotary. The bullets describe a square bar with sliders. A rotating head spins arms and wets a circle: the WISDOMWELL, the RAM ONLINE, and the Amazon Basics. Two heads are neither. The STYDDI is a zinc impulse sprinkler, a ticking jet with a claimed arc from 20° to 360°. The GRÜNTEK is a spike with an arc from 0° to 360° and a collar so you can aim without lifting it. A hosepipe ban stops both patterns. That notice is hosepipe ban and sprinklers.

A rectangular lawn

A long lawn is where the bar earns its place. WASH IT! 48625 reviewers use the sliders so a fence stays dry. A spinner is the wrong first buy on that rectangle. WISDOMWELL reviews say the circle leaves the corners. RAM reviews describe a dry ring, including on a garden of about 5 m. The bar still soaks the fence if the limiters stay at full travel. Set them first. That step is on how to use a garden sprinkler.

A round bed

A round bed, or a lawn you are happy to wet as a circle, is the rotating head. Reviewers call the WISDOMWELL droplets a light rain. The base tips on paving. RAM reviews cite a dry middle, and a head that stops unless the tap is fully open. Full tap then overshoots onto next door. Amazon Basics, at £8.93, is the heavier circle, and about 46.5 m² is claimed at 60 PSI. That PSI figure is the listing's condition, not your tap. You cannot narrow these arms into a strip. Angle changes the reach. It does not draw the rectangle a bar already makes. If the middle stays dry, move the head. Shape does not make a soak of an established lawn a wise use.

Impulse or spike, then stop

When you need a sector, the STYDDI is the exit. It claims 20° to 360° on a zinc sled, at £26.99. Metal, in this file, is not a more even pattern than a bar. Buy it for a wedge if you will watch the arm. Skip it if seed needs the fan a bar gives. A narrow border or a raised bed is the GRÜNTEK spike. You set an arc and aim with the collar. Reviews like the fine mist and mention a dry patch near the head. A circle on a long rectangle soaks the fence or misses the corners. An established lawn is still a poor reason to run any of them through a dry spell.

Common questions

I have a long rectangle. Which pattern?
Use an oscillating bar and set the limiters so the sweep stops at the fence. WASH IT! 48625 reviews describe that on a long lawn. Gardena Aqua S is the lighter bar people move once or twice, without a separate width control. Kärcher has forks and a width adjustment, at £36.00, and it may still need a second position. A spinning head on the same lawn misses corners or wets the path.
I have a round bed. Which pattern?
Spinning arms match a circle. RAM ONLINE at £6.99 and WISDOMWELL at £9.99 both claim a 26–32.8 ft diameter at 2.5 bar. Reviews put the real throw lower, and both can leave a dry ring. Amazon Basics is the heavier head if the light ones walk. A bar waters a round bed only by overshooting it into a rectangle you then have to live with.
Why does the spinner miss the middle or the corners?
The arms throw outward. RAM reviews describe a dry ring and a weak ring on a garden of about 5 m. WISDOMWELL reviews say the corners of a square stay dry because the wetted shape is a circle. Angle and tap flow change the radius. They do not fill the hole in the middle. Move the head, or use a bar if the plot is not round.
Can I narrow a spinning head to a strip?
Not reliably, in this set. Nozzles on the RAM and the WISDOMWELL adjust from 15° to 45°, which changes the spray's angle, not the outline of a rectangle. One user blocked a WISDOMWELL with sticks because a narrow arc was not available. A bar's sliders, or the Kärcher's width control, are what actually shorten one side.
When is the zinc impulse the exit?
When you want a sector, from a claimed 20° up to a full circle, and you want metal rather than a plastic whirl. The STYDDI is that head, at £26.99. It is not the even fan a seed bed wants from a bar.
When is the metal spike the exit?
When the soil is a border or a raised bed, and you can push a spike in. The GRÜNTEK aims an arc without you lifting the head. Reviews like the fine spray and call the throw short, about a 3 m radius or about 6 m across. A spike is the wrong tool for a whole rectangular lawn.
