Garden sprinkler buying guide

Updated: October 2026

You are looking at a brown lawn and a title that says 300 m², and the first decision is not which bar looks sturdy. This garden sprinkler buying guide is the order of checks for the eleven heads on the [sprinkler comparison](/hub/fire-protection/sprinkler), from £6.99 to £36.00 on the amazon.co.uk capture of 16 October 2026. A mains sprinkler is hosepipe use, so the ban comes before the pattern. An established lawn is a different job from new seed. Products Compared did not measure a tap. A qualifying purchase can earn a commission at no extra cost to you.

Check the ban before the trolley

A portable head on a hosepipe draws mains water the same way a hose does. If a temporary use ban is in force, the square metres on the box do not make the session legal, and a shorter run does not either. Thames Water and South East Water were not saying the same thing in October 2026, so a national line that sprinklers are banned is the wrong shortcut. Scotland and Northern Ireland have their own undertakers. Look up the company for the supply address and read this week's notice. Cans and butts are on hosepipe ban and sprinklers. If a mains sprinkler is prohibited, you stop. A ban does not choose the head. It decides whether a mains head is a purchase at all.

Established lawn or new grass

The Royal Horticultural Society accepts a sprinkler for new seed or new turf, and its drought page asks you not to water an established lawn through a dry spell. You still have a reason when the job is seed, turf laid this season, or a bed a can cannot cover. If the lawn is established and you only want it green in a dry week, leave the head in the basket. Connecting, and the jam-jar stop, are on how to use a garden sprinkler.

Match the pattern to the plot

Most UK lawns are rectangles, and a bar you can limit is what keeps a path dry. In this set the bars are the WASH IT! 48625, the WASH IT! 2573, the Gardena Aqua S, the Kärcher OS 5.320 SV, the YIFKJYLF and the XTDMJ. The XTDMJ style name says Rotary. The bullets describe a square bar with sliders. A spinning head on that rectangle either misses the corners or soaks the edge. A round bed is the other way round. The WISDOMWELL, the RAM ONLINE and the Amazon Basics whirling head draw a circle. A narrow border is the GRÜNTEK spike. The STYDDI is a zinc impulse head with a claimed arc from 20° to 360°. That choice is oscillating versus rotating.

Read the pressure behind the area

Every large area here is a claim at some pressure, and several listings never print it. RAM and WISDOMWELL claim 26–32.8 ft at a stated 2.5 bar. Amazon Basics ties about 46.5 m² to 60 PSI, which is not a reading from your tap. Ofwat's seven metres of static head, about 0.7 bar, is the communication pipe, not the garden tap. GRÜNTEK prints 2.76 bar as both a minimum and a maximum. One Gardena user at about 1.5 bar returned the bar. Rank the head by the tap, not by the biggest title.

What to leave in the basket

A filter or a cleaning pin is what you want once a nozzle blocks. Gardena, WASH IT! 2573, XTDMJ and YIFKJYLF name one. Kärcher names a pre-filter, and reviews describe a pin that jams. If the ban is off, the job is new grass or a bed, and the pattern matches the tap, you have a shortlist.

Common questions

Should I buy a sprinkler for a brown established lawn?
Usually no. The Royal Horticultural Society says an established lawn can brown and recover, and that watering it through a dry spell is not the job. A sprinkler can use, in an hour, about as much as a family of four uses in two days. Buy for new seed, new turf, or a bed a can cannot cover. A brown July lawn on its own is a reason to wait for rain.
Why is the watered patch smaller than the square metres on the title?
The titles assume a pressure the listing sometimes names and sometimes does not. Gardena's 7–17 m is a claim up to 4 bar, and reviews report about 6 m or 7 m. WASH IT! 48625 claims up to 300 m², and one review saw nearer 10 m². Kärcher's 320 m² bullet is not the same figure as its 320 litres-per-minute line. Read the pressure before you trust the area.
Is 0.7 bar the pressure at my outdoor tap?
No. Ofwat's seven metres of static head, about 0.7 bar, refers to the communication pipe, not the garden tap. Your tap can be higher or lower once the hose and the valve are in the line. A listing that assumes 2.5 bar or 4 bar is describing its own condition. It is not describing the pressure you have this afternoon.
Do I need a spike, a weighted bar, or forks?
Forks, on the Kärcher, hold a bar while you set the width. A weighted base, on the WASH IT! 2573 or the Amazon Basics, is the same idea without spikes. A metal spike, on the GRÜNTEK, is for a border, not for a rectangle. A light bar with no base named, such as the Gardena Aqua S at 275 g, is the one reviewers weigh down with a brick.
What if a hosepipe ban is on?
You do not buy a mains head for this week, and you do not run one you already own on the mains. A shorter session does not create an exemption. Cans, and stored water where the notice allows it, are on the hosepipe-ban page. Pattern and price matter only after that notice says a sprinkler is permitted.
