Hosepipe ban sprinkler

Updated: October 2026

The lawn is brown, the head is on the tap, and you are not sure the company still allows it. A hosepipe ban sprinkler question has one answer before any nozzle: a mains-fed sprinkler is hosepipe use, and this week's permission is your company's notice. This page is the statute and two snapshots from October 2026, for a supply in England or Wales. It does not cite Scottish Water or NI Water. If a notice allows a head at all, the rows are on the [sprinkler comparison](/hub/fire-protection/sprinkler). Products Compared read legislation.gov.uk and the company pages below. A sprinkler is a hosepipe

Section 76 of the Water Industry Act 1991 lets an undertaker prohibit specified uses, including watering a garden with a hosepipe. The offence is a fine up to level 3 on the standard scale. Section 76A says a hosepipe includes anything designed, adapted or used for the same purpose. A sprinkler on a hose is inside that wording. A prohibition can include exceptions. The exception is whatever your notice lists, not a general right to water new turf, and not a ten-minute run.

What the notice must tell you

The Act gives the power. The notice binds the address. You need the undertaker for the supply, the start date, the area, and the exceptions it still lists. Two undertakers can both be in a ban and still differ on a butt and on a new lawn. This page did not fetch an Essex and Suffolk notice, so it will not repeat a 28-day line from a search snippet. If you cannot name the company on the bill, you are not ready to open the tap.

Thames and South East Sussex, as snapshots

Thames Water's page, dated Monday 12 October 2026, said a ban remained. The legal notice runs from 00:01 on 23 July 2026 until further notice, and it puts a sprinkler on a hosepipe inside the prohibition. A Thames FAQ allows a hose on a business-laid new lawn for 28 days, on that planting only. That is Thames, not Sussex. South East Water's Sussex FAQ says that from 9 October 2026 previous exemptions were dropped except health, safety or welfare, and that mains sprinklers are prohibited there. Re-read the page before you treat this paragraph as this morning's rule.

What those pages still allow

Reused household water, where Thames lists it, is water you would otherwise tip away. The Water Use (Temporary Bans) Order 2010 includes drawing water through a hosepipe from a container. Read the relevant-water limit before you decide every butt sits outside every ban. The company page is what you follow on the day. A spray head is not drip irrigation. If the notice allows a mains sprinkler, the next page is the garden sprinkler buying guide.

Scotland, Northern Ireland, and the fine

This pass did not cite a Scottish Water rule or an NI Water rule. Do not paste the Thames notice, the Sussex FAQ, or section 76 onto a supply in Glasgow or Belfast. Look up the undertaker on your bill. If that page is silent on sprinklers, the silence is not permission. Ofwat's explainer of 12 August 2022 says up to £1,000. Quoting that figure without the date makes it sound like today's tariff. It is not. A ban does not make one brand more legal than another, and a spike is still a hosepipe. Pattern and price come after the notice says you may run a mains head.

Common questions

Does a sprinkler count as a hosepipe?
Yes, when it is doing the hosepipe's job. Section 76A of the Water Industry Act 1991 includes anything designed, adapted or used for the same purpose. Thames Water's legal notice names a sprinkler in that prohibition. A spray head on a hose is not a different category from the hose. An exception has to be written in your notice. It is not assumed from the shape of the head.
Can I run it for ten minutes during a ban?
No. A shorter session does not take a mains sprinkler out of a temporary use ban. The prohibition is on the use, not on a timer. Ten minutes on new seed is still the use if the notice forbids a sprinkler.
Can I use a watering can?
On the pages read here, yes. Water UK's FAQ describes buckets and cans as the usual allowance, and Thames Water's page of 12 October 2026 lists cans as still allowed. You fill the can and carry it. Fitting a sprinkler to a hose and calling the result a can is not that allowance. If your own notice is stricter, the notice wins.
Can I use water already in a butt?
Sometimes, and only as your notice describes it. Thames Water's 12 October 2026 page listed a butt as still allowed. The 2010 order includes drawing water through a hosepipe from a container inside using a hosepipe, with a limit on what counts as the relevant water. Do not assume every butt is outside every ban.
Is new turf exempt for 28 days?
Not as a national rule. A Thames FAQ says a business-laid new lawn can be watered by hose for 28 days, on that new planting only. From 9 October 2026, South East Water's Sussex notice dropped previous exemptions except health, safety or welfare, and mains sprinklers were prohibited. Other South East counties were still on an earlier notice when that FAQ was written. Read your own notice.
Who do I check, Thames or my own company?
Your own company, for the supply address. Thames Water's notice binds the Thames area as that notice is written. It does not bind a South East Water postcode or a Scottish supply. Find the name on the bill and read the date before you open the tap.
