How to use a garden sprinkler

Updated: October 2026

The head is on the lawn, the hose is in your hand, and the usual mistake is to open the tap before the pattern is aimed. How to use a garden sprinkler, for a head in this set, is a short order: check the ban, fit the tap, then the hose, then the head, set the limiters, and stop when a jam jar on new grass holds about 13 mm. Which head to buy stays on the [sprinkler comparison](/hub/fire-protection/sprinkler). The plot's shape stays on [oscillating versus rotating](/hub/fire-protection/sprinkler/sub/sprinkler-oscillating-vs-rotating). Products Compared did not run a session.

Stop if the ban is on

If your water company is prohibiting hosepipe use, you do not open the tap on a sprinkler. A mains-fed head is that use. Thames Water and South East Water published different exceptions in October 2026, so a tip from the next county is not your rule. The notice is set out on hosepipe ban and sprinklers. When the notice allows a mains sprinkler, or you are using stored water it still permits, the rest of this page applies. If the lawn is established and merely brown, stop here even when the ban is off.

Tap, hose, then the head

Hozelock says most UK outdoor taps are 3/4 inch BSP. BSP is the thread standard, not the outside diameter. Do not copy a Hozelock red-ring position onto a WASH IT!, a Gardena or a Kärcher. Open the tap only after the limiters are set. The buying checks are on the garden sprinkler buying guide. A loose GRÜNTEK fitting blew off in one review, so seat the hose before you turn the tap.

Aim, then the jam jar

Stand a bar so the sweep stays on the soil you mean to wet. A rotating head has to sit inside the bed, because you cannot trim a corner the way a limiter can. If the first pass soaks the patio, move the head. On new grass, where a ban allows it, run the sprinkler until an open jam jar holds 13 mm. Do not use this routine on an established lawn through a dry spell.

When it sticks or weeps

A bar that will not sweep is often a limiter, not a dead gearbox. Set both ends, cycle the tap, then decide the head is faulty. A WASH IT! 48625 in the reviews only reached halfway. A Kärcher sat stuck until the tap was cycled. A RAM or a WISDOMWELL that will not spin may need the tap further open.

Butt, borehole and frost

A hose left in a butt, a pond or a bucket can pull that water back towards the mains. The Water Fittings Regulations are why a double check valve belongs on that line. None of these sprinklers includes that valve. Do not exceed a printed maximum: 4 bar on several listings, 6 bar on the STYDDI. GRÜNTEK's 2.76 bar line contradicts itself. Gardena's international page mentions frost protection. The amazon listing does not, so this page will not call the Aqua S frost-proof. Drain the head and take it in.

Common questions

What do I click together before I open the tap?
Tap connector, then hose-end connector, then the sprinkler. Most UK outdoor taps are 3/4 inch BSP. A thread about 26.5 mm across looks like an inch and is still 3/4 inch BSP, not 1 inch. Pull a Hozelock-style sleeve rather than twisting it. Set the sweep or the arc before you open the tap, or the first water lands on the patio.
How long do I leave it on?
On new grass, where a sprinkler is allowed, run it until an open jam jar holds about 13 mm. That is the Royal Horticultural Society's July figure, not a 20 or 30 minute timer. Move the head if a corner is still dry. Do not use that routine on an established lawn through a dry spell. A short run does not make a banned mains sprinkler legal.
Where do I stand the bar so the fence stays dry?
Put the bar on the lawn and set the limiters so the sweep stops before the fence. WASH IT! sliders and a Kärcher width control are built for that. A Gardena Aqua S sets range and does not give you a separate width. A spinning head cannot trim one side the same way. If the first minute wets the fence, move the head.
It will not sweep. What do I check first?
Check both limiters. A halfway sweep is what reviewers describe when the stops are not set for two-way travel. Cycle the tap. A Kärcher in this sample started only after that. On a RAM or WISDOMWELL, open the tap further before you decide the arms are dead. If it still will not move, and the nozzles are clear, stop. Forcing a stuck gearbox is how a sandy Gardena became a sealed failure.
It leaks at the connector. Is that the head?
Sometimes. WASH IT! 48625, XTDMJ, STYDDI and RAM reviews include a joint that weeps, a missing washer, or a fitting that had to be replaced. Reseat the click-fit and add a washer before you blame the bar. One Gardena leak was the outdoor tap, not the sprinkler. If water dumps at the joint as soon as the pressure rises, that connector is not seated.
Can I run it from a water butt or a borehole?
Only if the notice allows it. These heads do not include a double check valve. A hose sitting in a butt or a bucket is a backflow risk under the Water Fittings Regulations. Sandy borehole water jammed a Gardena gearbox that could not be opened. Clean mains is what these listings assume.
