You connect a new lawn sprinkler, turn on the tap and get a neat fan of water that never sweeps. If your sprinkler is not oscillating, UK consumer rights may help, but first you need to distinguish a faulty mechanism from a range control left in the wrong position. That check can make your complaint clearer and avoid sending back a working product.

In short

A new oscillating sprinkler that will not move at all may fail the Consumer Rights Act 2015 requirement that goods be of satisfactory quality. Check its controls and water supply first; if it remains stuck, complain to the trader promptly, as the short-term right to reject normally lasts 30 days. A reduced throw or one-sided sweep caused by adjustment is a different issue and does not by itself prove a defect.

Check the setup before calling it faulty

Begin with the controls on the sprinkler itself. Oscillating bars commonly have sliders or stops that set the left and right limits, and an apparently stuck bar may simply have both limits placed together. Move each control through its full range and return it to a broad sweep using that model's instructions. A Hozelock instruction such as putting both rings down describes its own mechanism, not every bar sprinkler.

Next, put the sprinkler on level ground, straighten the hose and open the tap enough for a steady flow. Check whether a kink, a partly closed connector or a severe leak is starving the mechanism. Our guide to a sprinkler leaking at the hose connector covers the joint checks. If the nozzles spray strongly but the bar stays in one position, low flow is a less convincing explanation, although designs differ. Stop if the unit clicks harshly or the bar binds: forcing it by hand could create damage that confuses the original fault.

Make one short video showing the control positions, the water running and the bar remaining still. Keep the packaging, the order page and the delivery record. You should not open a sealed mechanism merely to prove that a day-old sprinkler does not perform its basic function.

When a motionless sprinkler is faulty

An oscillating sprinkler is sold to move water across an area. If a correctly connected, correctly adjusted new unit never sweeps, that is materially different from disappointment over the exact edge of its coverage. Section 9 of the Consumer Rights Act 2015 says goods must be of satisfactory quality, assessed by what a reasonable person would consider satisfactory while taking account of the description, price and other relevant circumstances. Quality includes fitness for the usual purposes of goods of that kind, freedom from minor defects, safety and durability.

Not every hesitant movement is a legal fault. Very low flow, grit, a transport clip the instructions tell you to remove, or range stops placed together can explain the symptom. A spinner that worked until sand entered it is a different case from a mechanism stuck on its first clean-water run. Describe what you saw rather than naming an internal part.

The strongest account is chronological: it arrived on a stated date, you connected it to a working hose, set the controls as directed and it did not oscillate. Include a brief video and ask for the remedy you want. A stationary bar is not normal merely because water still leaves the nozzles.

Satisfactory quality depends on context

Price is part of satisfactory quality, but a sprinkler should still operate as a sprinkler when new. A basic model may reasonably have lighter materials and a shorter expected life. Paying £36 does not create a guaranteed number of summers unless the seller or manufacturer made a specific promise.

The featured Kärcher OS 5.320 SV was listed at £36.00 with a rating of 4.5 from 2,322 amazon.co.uk reviews when these details were supplied. Those figures can help you compare a current purchase, but a high average rating does not prove that your individual mechanism works or how long every unit lasts. We have not laboratory-tested it, and review totals are not a substitute for examining the fault you received. See the sprinkler comparison for buying context rather than treating one score as a durability guarantee.

If the listing makes a specific public statement about movement or adjustment, keep a screenshot. Such statements may form part of the quality assessment. A large-area title may be qualified by pressure, flow or settings, which our guide to reading sprinkler coverage claims explains. A smaller patch under different pressure is not the same as a bar that never moves.

The 30-day right to reject

The Consumer Rights Act gives a short-term right to reject goods that do not conform to the contract. For an ordinary distance purchase, the 30 days generally begin the day after delivery, not when you placed the order. Ownership and trader installation can also affect the start where they apply. Write down the delivery date and act promptly.

Tell the trader clearly that the sprinkler does not oscillate after the setup checks and, if that is what you want, that you are exercising the short-term right to reject. Your statutory claim is against the trader who sold the product. On a marketplace this may not be the brand and may not always be the marketplace operator, so use the seller shown in the order record. A manufacturer's warranty does not replace that claim.

You can choose to request a repair or replacement during this period. If you do, the waiting period pauses the 30-day clock. When the repair or replacement is returned, you have the time that remained or seven days, whichever is longer. Record when you asked, when the trader agreed and when the sprinkler came back.

The right is not a promise that every complaint produces an instant refund. The trader may dispute whether the product is faulty, particularly if the symptom disappears when the controls are reset. Keep your statement narrow, truthful and supported by the setup video.

What happens after 30 days

Passing day 30 does not end your rights. Repair or replacement is usually the next remedy. If the sprinkler worked for several weeks and then stuck, contact the trader with the purchase details, dates, settings, water conditions and how the behaviour changed.

Within the first six months, a fault is generally presumed present at delivery unless the trader shows otherwise. Misuse and external damage remain relevant: frost left in the unit, a forced oscillator, grit, or a cracked base. Disclose anything material.

If an agreed repair or replacement does not resolve the problem, a price reduction or final rejection can become relevant. This guide cannot promise the outcome of an individual dispute. Business Companion's trader guidance notes that a deduction for use may be possible on final rejection after six months. For goods of this kind, such a deduction is not made in the first six months. Keep accurate dates.

How to make a clear claim

Use a short, factual message. Identify the order, delivery date and model, then state that the sprinkler has not oscillated despite a working supply and range controls reset according to the instructions. Attach one video and say which remedy you seek. If you are rejecting within 30 days, use the words "short-term right to reject under the Consumer Rights Act 2015" rather than a vague request for help.

Keep screenshots of the listing, especially claims about oscillation, coverage or pressure, plus replies and return instructions. The timeline is delivery, first use, checks, complaint, agreed remedy and return. If the retailer asks about the settings or supply, answer with evidence.

If resetting a slider restores the full sweep, the immediate complaint has been resolved and there may be no defect to reject. Use the sprinkler how-to guide to review positioning and adjustment. If it sticks again under the same normal conditions, record the recurrence and contact the trader.

Products Compared bases this explanation on the Consumer Rights Act 2015 and UK trader guidance, not on a laboratory test of the named sprinkler. Product prices, ratings and review counts can change. If you buy through a qualifying affiliate link, we may earn a commission at no extra cost to you. That does not change your statutory rights or the seller responsible for your claim.

Common questions

Can I reject a sprinkler that has never oscillated?
Potentially. A new oscillating sprinkler that never sweeps may not be of satisfactory quality under the Consumer Rights Act 2015. First check the range controls, water supply and instructions, then contact the trader who sold it. If you are within the short-term 30-day period, you can state that you are exercising your right to reject, but the facts still matter.
When does the 30-day period begin?
For a typical online sprinkler purchase, the short-term right to reject normally starts the day after delivery. The statutory wording also accounts for ownership and any trader installation where relevant. Record the delivery date rather than counting from the order date. If you request a repair or replacement, the clock is paused while you wait.
Does asking for a replacement stop the 30-day clock?
Yes. Under the Consumer Rights Act 2015, the waiting period for an agreed repair or replacement pauses the short-term right-to-reject period. When the goods come back, you receive the remaining time or seven days, whichever is longer. Keep the messages and dates so you can show when that waiting period began and ended.
What if the sprinkler worked for a month and then stuck?
The end of the initial 30 days does not end all your rights. Within the first six months, a fault is generally presumed to have been present at delivery unless the trader shows otherwise. Repair or replacement is usually the next remedy. The outcome depends on whether this is a defect rather than damage, blockage, frost or incorrect adjustment.
Is one raised range slider a product fault?
Usually not if the slider is designed to limit the sweep and the sprinkler works normally once both controls are set correctly. A bar watering only one side can be behaving exactly as adjusted. Photograph the settings, reset them according to the instructions and retest before reporting a defect. Controls differ between models, so do not copy another brand's setup blindly.
Must a cheap sprinkler last as long as a £36 model?
The law does not set one lifespan for every sprinkler. Price is one factor in deciding satisfactory quality, alongside description and other relevant circumstances. A low price can affect reasonable durability expectations, but it does not make an item that never performs its ordinary function acceptable. Avoid turning either price point into a guaranteed lifespan.
Is a smaller watering area than the title advertised a fault?
Not automatically. Coverage often depends on pressure, flow, settings and how the listing qualifies its figure. A modest shortfall under different conditions is not the same as a mechanism that never moves. Compare the complete description and any pressure condition with your setup. A specific, unqualified public claim may still be relevant to satisfactory quality.
Do I claim against Amazon or the sprinkler brand?
Your statutory claim is against the trader that sold you the sprinkler, not automatically the manufacturer. Check the order record or receipt to identify the seller, particularly on a marketplace. A manufacturer's warranty may offer another route, but it does not replace your rights against the trader. Keep communication in writing where possible.
