How to fit a magnetic smoke alarm mount

Updated: October 2026

You have a self-adhesive plate and a smooth, sound ceiling, and you want the alarm up without screws. How to fit a magnetic smoke alarm mount comes down to a clean press, a wait that UK pages do not agree on, a sideways slide when you change the battery, and a test of the alarm button afterwards. This is the fitting page for the plates on our [smoke alarm magnet comparison](/hub/fire-protection/smoke-alarm-magnet). It does not rank them. Peter F. did not time a cure in a lab. Put the alarm where smoke can reach it

Fit the alarm on the hall or landing ceiling, because that is where Fire Kills says a smoke alarm can hear a fire on that floor. Keep it about 300 mm from walls and light fittings. Do not put it in the kitchen or the bathroom. One alarm on every storey is the starting point. A magnet does not change the spot. You are hanging a battery alarm you can slide down later. A mains head needs an electrician, not a pad. If a remedial notice has been served in England, restore a working alarm under that notice. If you cannot reach the ceiling safely, GOV.UK points you to the fire and rescue service. If the paint is Artex, woodchip, stipple, or loose, leave this page for the textured ceiling guide.

Clean and press

The surface wants to be dry, sound, and free of dust. Safelincs assumes matt emulsion for its own kit. The kept ECENCE bullets do not name a cleaner. They say press for 10 seconds. An alcohol wipe appears on other pages, including Magnosphere and a different ECENCE listing, not on B01FUFN6MS, B07G18J8DY, or B07G1BF811. Do not invent a soap step those bullets do not print. Separate the plates if they arrive stuck together. Stick one side to the ceiling and the match to the flat back, then press. Ten seconds is the press, not the cure. If the release film will not peel, do not gouge it above your face. Take another plate from the pack.

How long to wait

There is no single cure time. The kept ECENCE bullets stop at a 10-second press. Safelincs says wait one hour, then join the plates. WISUALARM says 24 hours, and so does the other ECENCE listing, B01FUFN1PK. Some reviewers on B07G1BF811 say they waited 24 hours. That is their practice, not the bullet. A longer wait is the cautious reading when the pages disagree. It does not guarantee the hold. The three-piece file includes falls after days, and IME reviews include falls within a week. Measure the flat back on the 50 mm or 70 mm page first. The 500 g line is a bullet, not a result for your ceiling.

Take it down and test

Take the alarm off by pushing it sideways off the plate. That is what the ECENCE bullets say, and what Safelincs says too. A straight pull is the mistake. Safelincs warns that pulling can lift paint and wallpaper. If you pull down, you load the adhesive, which is the part that fails in the reviews. Once the alarm is back on the plate, press its test button. Fire Kills asks for a monthly test. A click is not a test of the sensor or the battery. If the button is silent, follow the alarm manual. If the plate falls, do not restick the same pad, and do not sand a ceiling that might contain asbestos.

If you should have used screws

Use the screws when the manual requires them or the ceiling was never a candidate for glue. The table names the three ECENCE packs whose bullets describe the sideways push. It is not a ranking of which plate holds longer.

Common questions

Do I clean the ceiling with soap?
The kept ECENCE bullets do not say soap or alcohol. They say press for 10 seconds. The surface still needs to be dry and free of dust, which is the Safelincs condition for its own kit. Use a cleaner only if the plate you bought says so. A damp patch under the adhesive is a reason for an early fall.
How long do I wait before hanging the alarm?
Keep the instructions separate. The kept ECENCE bullets give a 10-second press and no hour figure. Safelincs says wait one hour, then join the plates. WISUALARM and the other ECENCE listing B01FUFN1PK say 24 hours. A longer wait is the cautious choice. It does not override a bad surface or a plate that is too small.
Do I pull the alarm straight off?
No. Push it sideways so the magnet plates slide apart. The ECENCE bullets and the Safelincs instructions both describe that sideways move. A straight pull loads the adhesive and can lift paint or wallpaper, which is the Safelincs warning. If the alarm will not slide, check you are pushing across the ceiling rather than down into the room. Forcing it off by the case is how the base cracks.
How do I know the alarm is working?
Press the test button after the alarm is seated, and do that every month. The click only tells you the plates have met. It does not tell you the battery is live. If the button is silent, follow the alarm manual. If a sealed alarm still fails the test, replace the alarm rather than buying another plate.
What if I should have used screws?
Stop and use the screws if the manual requires them, if the ceiling is not flat and sound, or if the alarm is mains-powered. Check for cables, drill for the plugs, and twist the alarm onto its own base. Call an electrician for mains. If you cannot do the job safely, ask the fire and rescue service. An alarm on the floor is not a fitted alarm.
