Swedish torch garden rules in the UK

Updated: October 2026

You have a cut log and a garden, and you want to know if lighting it is allowed. There is no torch licence. Swedish torch garden rules in the UK are the outdoor-fire rules, the rule on the wood you were sold, and the point where you call 999. The Products Compared editorial team checked GOV.UK and the fire-service lines on 16 October 2026. This page does not pick a pack. The listings are on the [Swedish fire torches comparison](/hub/fire-protection/swedish-fire). Nothing here says every evening is fine. Council pages, including North Yorkshire, Dorset, and Newcastle, say there is no general ban, and regularity matters.

There is no torch licence

GOV.UK's bonfire guidance does not set a national clock. What it limits is the material and the effect. Do not burn household waste so that it pollutes or harms health. Smoke that endangers traffic can bring a fine. The council has a duty where smoke may be a statutory nuisance. A Swedish torch is not rubbish, and it is still an outdoor fire. The fuel should be the log, not cardboard, plastic, or waste lit to help it start. There is no UK-wide hour, but a lease or a local rule can be stricter. Putting the flame out is in how to light a Swedish torch. In England and Wales, Highways Act 1980 section 161A covers a fire that sends smoke across a highway. Do not treat that section as the law in Northern Ireland or Scotland.

Smoke control is about chimneys

A smoke control area restricts smoke from a chimney. GOV.UK states an England penalty of up to £300 for chimney smoke, and up to £1,000 for buying unauthorised fuel for an appliance that is not exempt. Those are England figures. Do not quote £300 in Northern Ireland, or treat it as the fine in Scotland or Wales, without the local council page. Outdoor barbecues, chimineas, and garden bonfires remain allowed in a smoke control area, still under the bonfire rules. The area does not ban the torch, and it does not bless it. A torch is not a Defra-exempt stove. It has no flue.

The log you were sold

England's rule on selling wood is separate from the bonfire rule, and it binds the seller. Under 2 cubic metres, wood may be supplied only if it is certified Ready to Burn: 20% moisture or less, with the logo, the supplier, and a certification number. Kiln dried on a bullet is not that set of marks. The Topline listings do not show a certification number. That does not prove your pack is uncertified. It means this comparison could not see the number. Look at the label. Do not tell a neighbour the log is certified because the title said extra dry. The checks are in the kiln-dried Swedish fire log buying guide. Ready to Burn is not a permit to light the log, and it is not a promise of no smoke. The three-pack is the best value on price per stated log, and that price does not change this rule.

Distance, indoors, and 999

Fire services do not publish a torch by-law. Scottish Fire and Rescue Service and a London Fire Brigade line both say at least three feet from fences, sheds, trees, and awnings. Three feet is about 0.9 metres. It is a rule of thumb, not a lab clearance for these logs. Do not stand it against a fence. The base needs the same care. Reviews describe heat going down and the log falling apart. Use a slab, gravel, or a metal pit, which is the choice in Swedish torch versus a fire pit. Decking and dry grass are the wrong surface. A porch, a tent, and a garage are not outdoors: the log has no flue. Call 999 if the flame spreads to a fence, a shed, a tree, or a building. The council is for repeated neighbour smoke once everyone is safe.

Common questions

Can you use one in a smoke-control area?
You can use it outdoors. GOV.UK allows outdoor barbecues, chimineas, and garden bonfires there, still under the bonfire rules. The England enforcement note says outdoor burning is not what the smoke-control penalties cover, and that it can still be a nuisance. The area restricts chimney smoke.
What if smoke crosses a road?
Put it out. In England and Wales, Highways Act 1980 section 161A covers a fire that sends smoke across a highway. GOV.UK also flags smoke that endangers traffic. Do not apply that section to Northern Ireland as if it were the local Act.
When does neighbour smoke become a council matter?
When it may be a statutory nuisance under the Environmental Protection Act 1990. Councils investigate and can serve an abatement notice. One short fire you put out when asked is a different case from smoke you repeat or smoke that fills a house. There is no general ban.
Can you light it in a porch, tent, or garage?
No. Those spaces have no flue on the log. Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service warns about carbon monoxide from indoor solid fuel. A porch is not a garden because the door is open. A tent is worse: fabric, little air, and smoke that stays with the people inside.
When do you call 999 instead of the council?
Call 999 if the flame spreads to a fence, shed, tree, or building, or if you cannot keep it on the base. The council is for smoke that may be a nuisance once people and buildings are safe. Water until the embers are dead is the normal ending, on the lighting page.
